Native American Territories
At certain periods during the Pleistocene epoch, the temperatures turned cold enough to freeze much of the earth's water into ice. The sea level dropped as much as 90 m (300 ft) and the shallow Bering Strait between Alaska and Siberia became a natural land bridge on which grazing animals, and the humans who stalked them, passed. Most anthropologists believe that Native Americans descend from Asian peoples who moved into North America by way of this land bridge.

Native Americans
This article by Carol Otis Hurst first appeared in the Library Corner column of Teaching K-8 Magazine The study of Native American people and their cultures is a challenge because of the stereotypes that exist, not only in the literature, but in our own minds and in those of the children we teach. Not long ago I was working with children in a school on the east coast and told them I had just come from working with Indian children in North Dakota. They were sure I was telling another story since, they said, "There aren't any more Indians. We killed them all." Hard to believe such things in today's world of television and world wide communication, but I'm sure these children were not unique in their ignorance. Many studies of Indians leave students convinced that all Indians lived in tepees then and still do or that they were all wiped out, not that our ancestors didn't try.

Exploring Native Americans Across the Curriculum
Blast stereotypes with across-the-curriculum activities for students of all ages. Stereotypes of Native Americans abound in movies and on TV, in literature and in history books. "Teachers must provide accurate instruction not only about history but also about the contemporary lives of Native Americans," writes Debbie Reese in Teaching Young Children About Native Americans , a 1996 ERIC Digest. Reese is a Pueblo who studies and works in the field of early childhood education. Stereotype is a difficult issue to define in any culture, especially in the Native American culture. As noted in A Line in the Sand , a Web site dedicated to the debate surrounding Native American stereotypes and other issues: "We want to be careful to note that this 'line in the sand' will not lie at the same place for everyone," explains an introduction to the site. "We must recognize that not all Native American communities have had the same historical experience, either before or after 1492. For this reason, the members of these communities will have different opinions. There will be different opinions both between and within communities, just as there are in all human communities."

Easier - Native Americans, sometimes called American Indians, are descendants of the first people to live in the Americas. They had been living there for thousands of years before any Europeans arrived. Harder - When Columbus landed in what is now known as the West Indies, he incorrectly thought he had reached the Indies. He called the native people he met Indians. The Indians of the Americas spoke hundreds of different languages, had many varied ways of life, and each group had its own name. Some lived in large cities and others in small villages. Still others kept moving throughout the year, hunting animals and gathering wild plants.

    Native Languages of the Americas:
    Abenaki (Abanaki, Abenakis, Alnombak)
Language: Abnaki, or Western Abenaki, is an Algonquian language spoken today by only a few elders in Canada. Native speakers call their language Alnombak, Alnôbak, or Aln8bak (the 8 was a Jesuit symbol for a nasalized, unrounded 'o'.) Penobscot or Eastern Abenaki, a dialect mutually comprehensible with Western Abenaki, was once spoken in Maine. Sadly, the last fully fluent speaker of Penobscot Abenaki has passed on, but several elders know something of the language and are working to revive the language in the Penobscot Nation today.
People: The Abenaki tribe, together with the Maliseet Passamaquoddy Mi'kmaq , and Penobscot Indians , were members of the old Wabanaki Confederacy , adversaries of the Iroquois . These allies from the eastern seaboard spoke related languages, and Abenaki and Wabanaki have the same Algonquian root, meaning "people from the east." (The original Abenaki name for their specific tribe is Alnombak , "the people.") Today there are 2000 Abenaki Indians living on two reserves in Quebec, where they fled from British aggression in the 1600's, and another 10,000 descendants scattered throughout New England. The Abenaki tribe is only officially recognized in Canada, and only the Canadian population still speaks the Abenaki language.
