Exploring Native Americans Across the Curriculum
Blast stereotypes with across-the-curriculum activities for students of all ages. Stereotypes of Native Americans abound in movies and on TV, in literature and in history books. "Teachers must provide accurate instruction not only about history but also about the contemporary lives of Native Americans," writes Debbie Reese in Teaching Young Children About Native Americans , a 1996 ERIC Digest. Reese is a Pueblo who studies and works in the field of early childhood education. Stereotype is a difficult issue to define in any culture, especially in the Native American culture. As noted in A Line in the Sand , a Web site dedicated to the debate surrounding Native American stereotypes and other issues: "We want to be careful to note that this 'line in the sand' will not lie at the same place for everyone," explains an introduction to the site. "We must recognize that not all Native American communities have had the same historical experience, either before or after 1492. For this reason, the members of these communities will have different opinions. There will be different opinions both between and within communities, just as there are in all human communities."

Students will understand the following: Chief Joseph was well educated and articulate in English. For this lesson, you will need: Access to additional reference materials about Chief Joseph Tell students that you are going to devote a class period to reading the piece of Native American literature included below and analyzing it in a class discussion. Begin by explaining that the piece you will read is from the 19th century but that, unlike so much Native American literature that began orally and later was written down, this piece originated as a written document. Go on to say that the piece was published in a magazine for a white audience in 1879, two years after the writer had surrendered to the U.S. government; that the piece was written by the Nez Perce leader Chief Joseph, whose father had been converted to Christianity by a missionary; and that the son was educated in a mission school. Because to discover means to see or learn or find something for the first time, the native americans are the true discoverers of America.
    http://teacherlink.ed.usu.edu/tlresources/units/Byrnes-celebrations/columbus.htm
Subtopic: Columbus Day (Native American Perspective) Grade Level: Author: Jamie Huggard Background: In 1451, Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy. His true Italian name is Christoforo Colombo. Columbus' father was a weaver, and it was expected that Columbus would become one also. Instead, Columbus dreamed of becoming a sailor and so he talked with sailors and studied maps and charts. When Columbus was fourteen, he was hired as a cabin boy. His main voyages were short trips to the Mediterranean Sea. By the time Columbus turned thirty he became a captain. In 1476, Columbus became a Portuguese citizen and married Felipa. This is where his thoughts of traveling west to reach the Indies started to grow. He knew a voyage would be expensive, so in 1482, he asked King John II of Portugal for money and ships to sail west to the Indies. When the King refused, he went to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. At first, he was rejected but when Columbus asked Spain the second time, Queen Isabella decided to fund the expedition. Columbus was given three ships: the Nina , the Pinta , and the Santa Maria . He also received eighty-eight men to serve as crew members. On August 3, 1492, Columbus and his ships headed westward. Along the journey, the sailors began to be frightened. On October 10, they demanded that Columbus go back to Spain. To stop the tyranny, Columbus said that if they didn't sight land within two days, they would turn around.

Native American Coil Pots Lesson Plan
There are 20 Pueblo villages left in the Southwest; there were at one time in history 200. Each of the 20 Pueblos is famous for art and/or crafts and each has a specialty. Maria Martinez lived in the Pueblo of San Ildefonso and she was famous for creating black pottery. Read and skim the magazine about Maria. Mention that, like all Native Americans, Maria respected the earth and its resources. She only took enough DIRT for one pot at a time so that she did not waste it. Remind them to look around at lunch and be aware of what we waste! Grade Levels Second Grade Time Required Three 45 minute lessons Objectives Art History Key Terms Design Skills Lesson 1 Procedure
  • Divide a clay chunk into 3 equal pieces and roll each new chunk into a coil. It takes a little practice, using a forward rolling motion with the hand held straight and using palms and gentle pressure. It works best to stand and use a forward rolling, then lifting, hand motion. When the clay moves toward the edge of the table, lift and move it back, starting over. It does not work well to roll the hands back and forth over the coil. Roll each chunk into a coil, then roll coil up and place in bag. Wet paper towel and drop into bag with coils, write name and section on the tag. Gather ends of bag and put on twist tie. Make sure the whole bag is closed tight.
