Course Description. This course provides an introduction to Native American religious traditions, focusing on Southwestern, Southeastern, and Northern Plains cultures. Themes will include the impact of European and U.S. colonialism on Native religious traditions, the development of religious revitalization movements, the growth of Native American Christianity, and contemporary Native struggles to ensure the integrity of sacred sites, artifacts, and traditions.
Expectations and Grading. This course relies on student participation, and you are required to attend class regularly and complete the assigned readings each week. Class periods will alternate between lecture and discussion format, with occasional short films. The films are an integral part of the class, and we will discuss each of them either immediately afterwards or in the next class period. Your grade for the course will automatically drop by one full letter grade if you miss more than three classes, and at that point I will want to meet with you to discuss your participation in the class. You are required to turn in a one- to two-page response paper based on the readings each week (except the first). These response papers should reflect on some aspect of the readingperhaps interesting questions for discussion, or points you didn't understand from the reading. The purpose of the response papers is to ensure that you are doing the readings, and to let me know how you are responding to the material. Response papers are due on the day we will be discussing the reading, and late papers will not be accepted.

In a time of considerable misunderstanding, ignorance, and confusion with regard to the historica religions of Native Americans, this book supplies a much-needed resource for information and correction. I teach a course on Native American History and Culture and will use this book a required reading for my students. It addresses an area of interest to them. The book will help the reader not only understand traditional beliefs and practices but, also, the impact and consequences of contact with Europeans and other groups who were not Native American upon Native American religions.

And this, despite the fact that hundreds of books and

Little of this scholarly literature has found its

Many followers of Aboriginal religions, such as the many types of Native American Spirituality, do not regard their spiritual beliefs and practices as a "religion" in the way in which many Christians do. Their beliefs and practices form a integral and seamless part of their very being. Native culture and religion should be valued. They have made many contributions to North American society: an awareness of concern for the environment food staples such as corn, beans, squash, potatoes and sweet potatoes the design of the kayak, toboggan and snowshoe the original oral contraceptive, cotton over 200 drugs, derived from native remedies It is ironic that the wine that is the Christians' most sacred substance, used in the Mass to represent the blood of their God, has caused such a trail of devastation within Native populations. And the Natives' most sacred substance, tobacco, has caused major health problems for so many Christians.

Sachem Walkingfox offers prayers at the
Carlisle Indian School cemetery in Pennsylvania. Spirituality is not religion to Indians. Religion is not an Indian concept, it is a non Indian word, with implications of things that end badly, like wars in the name of individuals God's and so on. Indians do not ask what religion another Indian is, because they already know the answer. To an Indian, spirituality is about the Creator and it is personal. Purpose and Organization
The American Indian Religious Freedom Act (AIRFA) clarifies U.S. policy pertaining to the protection of Native Americans' religious freedom. The special nature of Native American religions has frequently resulted in conflicts between federal laws and policies and religious freedom. Some federal laws, such as those protecting wilderness areas or endangered species, have inadvertently given rise to problems such as denial of access to sacred sites or prohibitions on possession of animal-derived sacred objects by Native Americans. AIRFA, passed in 1978, acknowledged prior infringement on the right of freedom of religion for Native Americans. Furthermore, it stated in a clear, comprehensive, and consistent fashion the federal policy that laws passed for other purposes were not meant to restrict the rights of Native Americans. The act established a policy of protecting and preserving the inherent right of individual Native Americans (including American Indians, Eskimos, Aleuts, and Native Hawaiians) to believe, express, and exercise their traditional religions. AIRFA is primarily a policy statement. Approximately half of the brief statute is devoted to Congressional findings. Following the Congressional findings, the act makes a general policy statement regarding American Indian religious freedom:
