Sign Guestbook View Guestbook Welcome! For over two decades now I've been on an odyssey seeking the answers to three questions central to the meaning of being queer: who are we? where did we come from? what are we for? My answers to these questions are in the books and articles I have written, as well as the many slide-lectures I've given around the country. I hope to use this website as well to share what I've learned on this odyssey. Here you'll find information about my publications, along with excerpts and some samples of recent work-in-progress. There's background on the Native American two-spirit tradition and its parallels around the world, queer mythology, lesbian/gay culture and history, and Applied Meditation. I will be updating this site on a regular basis, so visit me often! Let me know what you'd like to see here. You can leave comments in my guest book or e-mail me. We are in the process of expanding this section by scanning public domain ethnographic accounts on specific Native American religious and spiritual practices. We are fortunate that there is a wealth of such material available, which makes it so much more puzzling why more of it is not on the Internet yet. The study of Native Americans by anthroplogists has had its share of bad science and ethical problems. However, the texts we are in the process of scanning were written by 19th and 20th Century ethnographers who were known for their careful and respectful approach to the people they studied. These were scholars who lived for years with the people they studied, and obtained permission to transcribe their oral sacred literature.

69. Mythology: Native American Myths
MYTHS. native american Myths. Many native american myths could equally well be called folktales, in that they seem to be about ordinary people, not gods.
http://www.livingmyths.com/Native.htm
L I V I N G M Y T H S Native American Myths
Many Native American myths could equally well be called folktales, in that they seem to be about ordinary people, not gods. However, in so far as one can generalize, the Native American attitude is that everything is animated by divinity. Hence ordinary people, animals and places are divine. In many cases the people are not even named, or they are known by a convenient tag, such as Rabbit Boy – who was brought up by rabbits. Nor is there much attempt to characterize them, since they stand for universal principles which are considered to be more important than individual traits. Whereas Greek myths were shaped and ordered by classical authors, few Native American myths were written down before the late nineteenth century. Thus the apparent contradictions and inconsistencies of the right-brain oral tradition are still very much present.
Native American spirituality
Among all tribes there is a strong sense that behind all individual spirits and personifications of the divine, there is a single creative life-force, sometimes called ‘the Great Mystery’, which expresses itself throughout the universe, in every human, animal, tree and grain of sand. Every story, too, is a working out of this life-force.

The Iroquois were actually not a people, but a federation of six Native American nations: the Cayuga, Mohawk, Seneca, Oneida, Onondaga, and Tuscarora. In terms of power, they were perhaps the most formidable Native American group in North America, and the most represented in the imaginative works of the European settlers, controlling at their zenith a territory covering Massachusetts to Ohio and Quebec and Ontoario to Kentucky. They are famous in the "captivity" literature, stories about the kidnapping of European settlers, of the early settlers and make their most forceful entrance into American history by siding with the French in the French and Indian Wars. These nations, like most Native American nations on the east coast, were largely exterminated by this century. Their stories, however, lingered in traditions passed along by a very small group of people; the creation story here narrated was recorded early in this century. Visual arts The folklore of the United States , or American folklore , is the folk tradition which has evolved on the North American continent since Europeans arrived in the 16th century . While it contains much in the way of Native American tradition, it should not be confused with the actual tribal beliefs of any real band, nation or community of native people. American Folklore, rather, is that strange fusing of European ideals of "civilization" with a European obsession with the "exotic" and the "savage." Anyway you slice it, American Folklore is essentially about immigrants and their misunderstanding of each other, and of the new landscape they found themselves conquering, and of the people that had already been there when the first "white men" arrived. Ultimately, American Folklore is a constant intertwining of the new and the old, the mechanical and the pastoral, the mundane and the miraculous, for no other purpose it seems than to fill up the space of a lazy afternoon.

The Mythology of Native North America > Customer Review #1: Introduction to Turtle Islands Myths

This book is a wonderful introduction to the general mythologies of North America. After explaining the importance of Native American myths, Leeming and Page give a wonderful introduction to Native American culture, pointing out shared traits and beliefs (such as the earth-diver creation story) that can be found from Siberia and northern Eurasia to North America down through Central and South America. They then examine the different culture areas (the Arctic, Subarctic, Northwest Woodlands, Southeast Woodlands, Great Plains, Northwest Coast, California and the Great Basin and the Southwest), looking at major themes, language groupings and Nations in each region. More than anything else this shows both the unity of the First Nations, and the diversity as even close neighbors differed signifcantly in culture at times. The first chapter looks at Native American pantheons, showing universal archetypes such as the world creator, the mother figure and the supreme god. Each one gives a few Native American myths to support it, ranging from traditional Native American myths (both told by Native peoples and recorded by anthropologists) to Oglala holy man Black Elk to James Mooneys massive Myths of the Cherokees, and covering a wide variety of Nations and regions. It then goes on to look at other figures central to Native culture, such as the Trickster (coyote, raven, Manabozho, Glooskap, etc), the Dying God and a wide variety of other kachinas, manitous and spirits. Again a wide variety of Nations are examined, including Sioux, Cherokee, Penobscott, Maidu, Luise±os, Ojibway, Apache and many others besides.
