This article will be about the development of a North American mythology (in the United States and Canada) since the European invasion. Information about Native American mythology can be found in the appropriate heading in mythology Vodun and related topics are also dealt with on a separate page. A mythology is simply a story of some sort which has emotional, cultural, moral or ethical value to a nation. Taken broadly, then, American mythology can include any narrative which has contributed to the shaping of American values and belief systems. These narratives may be true and may be false; the veracity of the stories is not a determining factor. See also: American folklore Table of contents 1 Founding of the United States

Founding of the United States
Christopher Columbus
Though Christopher Columbus did not participate in the founding of the American government, he has been interpreted as a "founder" of the American nation, in that it is descended from the European immigrants that would not have moved to the New World if Columbus had not found where it was. Indeed, one particularly pervasive myth is that Columbus discovered America, as it is far easier to heroify a man than a complex series of waves of immigrants from multiple conditions and walks of life. According to some stories, Columbus sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in order to prove that the world was round, because he expected to reach the Far East by sailing west. Like most mythological "founders" Columbus' mission is then rendered entirely noble, intellectual and rational. He helped dispel the inaccurate myths of his time, and, so, it is concluded, the nation he founded must be a nation of intellect and logic.

Background
Archeological evidence indicates that Native American tribes lived in the Yellowstone area almost 10,000 years ago; a major trail these tribes used for tracking bison goes right through the park. Some of the tribes that traveled or lived nearby include the Shoshone, Bannock, Blackfoot, Flathead, Nez Perce, Utes, Crows, Piegans, and Paiutes.
Imagine what Native Americans must have thought when they first saw the park's geysers, mudpots, and hot springs! As in other cultures, Native American culture is rich in myths and legends that were used to explain natural phenomena that they didn't understand. The most common myths are the creation myths, that tell a story to explain how the earth was formed. Others include explanations about the sun, moon, constellations, animals, seasons, and weather. In this lesson, students will review some of these myths and then write their own myths to explain how the geologic features of Yellowstone came to be. Objectives Students will:
  • read Native American myths
  • summarize the myths in class discussions
  • write their own myths

Many of these tribally affiliated ethnic groups endure today as political communities. The name "Indians" was bestowed by Christopher Columbus, who mistakenly believed that the places he found them were among the islands in Southeast Asia known to Europeans as the Indies. information from http:www.pantheon.org/mythica/articles/c/coyote.html
There are many different myths about creation in Native American Mythology. In almost every nation the people had a desire to know where they came from and how they came to be. Then they come up with their own beliefs about the creation of humans and the world.
The Creation of Mankind according to Hopi tradition: Spider woman gathered the earth , this time of four colors, yellow, red, white and black; mixed with tuchvala, the liquid of her mouth; molded them; and covered her white-substance cape, which was creative wisdom itself. She sang over them the creation song. When she uncovered them, these forms were the image of Sotuknang. Then she created four more in her own image. They were wuti, female partners for the first four male beings. When she uncovered them they came to life. This is just one myth from the hundreds of different beliefs to how and where Native Americans have come from. I hope that you enjoyed the Hopi Indian creation myth. !!! Native American Mythology
Your task is work with a partner to create a presentation which compares a Native American folk tale, myth or legend with a popular myth from another culture - Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Early Christian, Asian, African or European. 1. First read pages 20-25 in your Elements of Literature anthology. 2. Next, choose a Native American myth or legend. One person will present the Native American folk tale to the class. In Native American tradition, stories, legends and history were passed down through oral tradition; there were no written documents. Often, storytellers would illustrate their tales with drawings on cave walls or clothing, and even in dirt on the ground. They never read the stories. Instead, the shamans, or storytellers, would engage their audience by telling the folk tale with emotion using different voices, facial expressions and gestures. I expect you to do the same. You are to use a four panel story board as a visual aid during the presentation and supplement your telling with appropriate music, photographs or artifacts. 3. The other partner will present a comparison of your Native American myth or legend to a myth or legend from another culture. They will share an explanation of how the two stories deal differently with a similar theme or event.

Native American Legends, Folk Tales, and Stories
Native American mythology is a very rich cultural history of its own. In the telling of tales, many things can be taught or learned. This is one of the ways that many tribes kept their cultures alive; it was not just a collection of stories, but of their beliefs, their ways, and their lives. Many legends are still told; some old, some new, but all are part of the beautiful culture that the indigenous peoples of North America have had and still have. In the telling of some of these stories, I will be handing along things that were told from grandmother to granddaughter; grandfather to grandson, for many generations. These stories, in and of themselves, are near to sacred for many groups of people. I honor each of you who read these stories with them; I wish you well, and hope that you all learn some of the history and understanding of these Native peoples. There are many different kinds of stories. There are some that are called "hero stories"; these are stories of people who lived at one time, and who were immortalized by these stories of them. There are "trickster stories", about the different trickster figures of the tribes (Saynday for the Kiowa; Coyote for the Navajo (Dine'); and so on, who were both helpful and dangerous figures in the belief. There are tales that are simply warnings; they warn against doing something that may harm in some way. And there are many other types as well. In reading these tales, you may notice that many, if not all, have morals or some form of belief that is being taught; these are the teachings of the storytellers. This is how the things were remembered.
