This is not an art museum in the usual sense of the word. Here visitors will find beautiful objects whose forms originate in function. Familiar things like baskets, chairs, teapots in clay, fiber, glass, metal, wood, and exotic materials exemplify the vibrant diversity and richness of contemporary creativity in craft. This is the nation's premier museum specializing in craft of the twentieth century. Designed to serve its specific purpose, the magnificent space includes a three-story stairway-atrium with the tallest interior museum wall in New York a fitting home to a magnificent permanent collection and changing exhibitions of the best works in their fields. The American Craft Museum offers a full calendar of really fun workshops for families and individuals. Using commonly available materials, participants turn out some pretty neat products. With an investment of a little creativity, who knows? this could be the start of something new. Educational activities reach out to families and organized groups alike. In "Meet the Artist" demonstrations, artists answer questions, discuss technique, and interact with school groups in a hands-on workshop. School Programs for grades K through 12 introduce students to the Museum, craft, and special exhibitions. Before the visit, teachers receive materials to help make the most out of the program. Maximum group size is 35. School groups should have one chaperone for every six children.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CHANGING HANDS: ART WITHOUT RESERVATION CONTEMPORARY NATIVE AMERICAN ART FROM THE SOUTHWEST
JANUARY 17 ‚ MARCH 21, 2004
Brockton, MA ‚ The Fuller Museum of Art will present the exhibition Changing Hands: Art Without Reservation from January 17 through March 21, 2004. Changing Hands showcases the work of one hundred of Americaís most talented, creative and innovative artists, and is the most comprehensive exhibition to date of contemporary Native American artists of the Southwest. Cutting-edge work in clay, glass, fiber, jewelry, metal and wood by emerging and established artists will be featured. Organized by The American Craft Museum, Changing Hands is the first of three exhibitions dedicated to the presentation and interpretation of Native American work today.
The goal of the series is to present artists whose works challenge ideas and perceptions of the definitions of art, craft and design today, as well as concepts of ethnicity and contemporary culture. The exhibition offers an opportunity to appreciate not only the work of influential pioneers who defied traditional Native American stereotypes, but also works being created today by young, emerging voices in Native American art. The artists represented acknowledge and honor the craft traditions of their cultures, while simultaneously proposing new avenues of creativity that emphasize the ways that art evolves, changes and develops in response to contemporary concerns and issues.
