Local politicians take stand on Native American issues at UW rally
Native American dancers performed tradional dances during Friday's Tribal Sovereignty and Treaty Rights Rally.
Kathleen Belew The Daily
Native American political groups rallied at Red Square on Friday to raise awareness on sovereignty issues and to encourage Native American students to vote. The rally, staged as a effort to reinvigorate the native voting population in the face of a recent Republican resolution to dissolve tribal self-rule featured prominent political speakers, UW President Richard McCormick, as well as traditional drumming, singing, dancing, voter registration and a salmon feed. Rally organizer and UW American Indian Student Commission director Ryan Sense Wilson began the rally with a speech about why people do not take political action. "People are scared," Wilson said. "They say,'What is going to happen to us if we stand up against those who wish to oppress us?' And the fear comes from 'What if we lose? What happens if we lose? We're going to get hurt even worse,' But you can't think that way, because we are the Indian people and we're not losers."

June 21, 2002 to The New York Times June 21, 2001 Mr. Howell Raines, Editorial Page Editor
New York Times

New York, NY 10036
Dear Mr. Raines, I write because of comments made in a recent New York Times article, "Off-Field Hurdles Stymie Indian Athletes" (6/17/01) that included quotes from the men's basketball coach at Montana State University, where I serve as president. I would like to make it clear that the comments do not reflect the attitudes nor the perceptions of myself or the administration at Montana State University, nor does it mirror the experience of American Indian students on this campus. For several decades, Montana State University has worked diligently to provide a supportive environment for American Indian students. With about 60,000 American Indians living in Montana, or six percent of the state's population, it is the largest minority in both our institution and in our state. Part of our university's mission is to serve the American Indians of our state. Our successes are many. One of the most respected members of our faculty is a respected American Indian scholar and the endowed chair in our very healthy Native American Studies department. One of the most honored students in our recent graduating class was an American Indian woman who is on her way to medical school. American Indian athletes have been successful participants in our track, football, and basketball programs for many years. In fact, one of the most successful members of our current basketball team is American Indian.

a Minnesota News Council Forum
November 20, 2001
On November 20 the News Council co-sponsored another public forum on racism in sports and media, specifically addressing objections by American Indians to the use of their religious rituals and symbols by sports teams as nicknames, logos, mascots and entertainment. The goal of the forum was to ask why sports teams and news organizations continue to use Indian names and traditions when so many Indians find the use offensive. The forum produced a consensus that no team, or news outlet, would even consider publicizing such imagined teams as the San Francisco Orientals, the Chicago Blacks, the Kansas City Caucasians or the New Jersey Jews. Indians are the only racial or ethnic group singled out by non-Indians for such exploitation. One speaker, Charlene Teeters, of the Spokane Nation, an art teacher in Santa Fe, told how she campaigned against her alma mater, the University of Illinois, which uses a white person as the mascot Chief Illiniwek, in feathers and war paint, dancing to a drumbeat at football games. The University would not budge.

Native American Consultation Database
The Native American Consultation Database (NACD) is a tool for identifying consultation contacts for Indian tribes, Alaska Native villages and corporations, and Native Hawaiian organizations. The database is not a comprehensive source of information, but it does provide a starting point for the consultation process by identifying tribal leaders and NAGPRA contacts. To ensure that all appropriate Indian tribes, Alaska Native villages and corporations, and Native Hawaiian organizations are involved in the consultation process, users should also investigate other sources of information, including the Bureau of Indian Affairs; Federal, state, and local governmental agencies involved in Native American issues; national, regional and local archives; and additional resources on the National NAGPRA Website. First time users are strongly advised to read the supporting documentation , which provides information about the content and format of the reports generated through a search, and information on the authorities for the source data in the NACD. The Native American Consultation Database is updated periodically with contact information received from Indian tribes, Alaska Native villages and corporations, and Native Hawaiian organizations, and from the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Detailed sketches (over 1000) and descriptions of just how these people made the items used during their daily life. Highly Recommended Fools Crow : Wisdom and Power
by Thomas E. Mails This is an excellent account of the life of Frank Fools Crow, Lakota Medicine Man and Spiritual leader of his people during the early reservation period. This powerful writing details Fools Crows healing powers that he used only to help his people. Mails tells the poignant story of how Fools Crow struggled to keep alcohol off the reservations and to keep his people focused upon their ancient cultural ways and tribal traditions. I had the honor of meeting Frank Fools Crow just a year before his passing. He body was old and weak, but the light of life and wisdom in his eyes was clear and powerful.
