Making Good On America's Promises: Wes Clark's Commitment To American Indians And Alaska Natives
America's Native people have long championed many of the ideals that Wes Clark highlights in his vision for America, including respect for the bonds of family, community and tradition. And General Clark recognizes their invaluable contributions to the U.S. military. From the Code Talkers of World War II to today in Iraq, where brave young Americans such as Lori Piestewa and Sheldon Hawk Eagle gave their lives for our country, American Indians and Alaska Natives have answered the call to service and served this nation with honor. However, for too long this country has not returned the favor. In most cases, it's done just the opposite. This is not just an issue of history the U.S. government continues to deny tribal nations the resources and respect they're due. The Clark Administration will work as partners with tribal governments to do better.

Clark Historic endorsement for Democratic Candidate for President As appeared in Native American Times TULSA OK Editorial Board of the Native American Times 12/30/2003 A strong belief in tribes as sovereign governments must be first and foremost in the mind of our country's top leader to understand the complex relationship Indian Country has with our federal government. Treaty obligations with tribes are seldom understood by most political leaders, which can lead to a deterioration of this relationship and dire circumstances for Indian Country. There is one candidate running for President who not only understands it, he has enforced treaty agreements and sovereign rights of other nations around the world. As the North Atlantic Treaty Organizations (NATO) Supreme Commander, Wesley Clark put his own safety at risk while supporting treaty agreements between nations around the world. This is one of many reasons why the Native American Times endorses Wesley Clark for President of the United States.

Exploring Native Americans Across the Curriculum
Blast stereotypes with across-the-curriculum activities for students of all ages. Stereotypes of Native Americans abound in movies and on TV, in literature and in history books. "Teachers must provide accurate instruction not only about history but also about the contemporary lives of Native Americans," writes Debbie Reese in Teaching Young Children About Native Americans , a 1996 ERIC Digest. Reese is a Pueblo who studies and works in the field of early childhood education. Stereotype is a difficult issue to define in any culture, especially in the Native American culture. As noted in A Line in the Sand , a Web site dedicated to the debate surrounding Native American stereotypes and other issues: "We want to be careful to note that this 'line in the sand' will not lie at the same place for everyone," explains an introduction to the site. "We must recognize that not all Native American communities have had the same historical experience, either before or after 1492. For this reason, the members of these communities will have different opinions. There will be different opinions both between and within communities, just as there are in all human communities."

    http://www.wvculture.org/arts/ethnic/native.html
Native American Communities in West Virginia
(as originally published in 1999) In West Virginia, the contemporary Native American population can best be described as a statewide community, consisting of a far-reaching network of individuals with Native American ancestry. There are approximately 3000 Native Americans in West Virginia. The community includes individuals from at least 43 different bloodlines and tribal associations. These are descendants from the regional Native Americans, including Cherokee and Shawnee, and individuals who more recently relocated to West Virginia from throughout North America. Many people in West Virginia have Native American blood, but do not have a historical tribal association, and many individuals have mixed blood, that is, ancestry of different tribes as well as different races in addition to Native American. The contemporary community reflects those who are finding new pride in their native heritage, and Native Americans who are newcomers to this area and who represent the pan-Indian community. The Native American community has struggled with oppression, imposed disruption, and insecurity since the arrival of European settlers in West Virginia. Individuals were being shipped away to Oklahoma reservations as late as the 1950s. As recently as 1964, it was illegal for a Native American to own property in West Virginia. In spite of these hardships, vestiges of communities survived and their heritage is re-emerging with renewed pride.
