Phone: 973-6405 Fax: 973-9751 December 19, 2003 Dear Stony Point Families, This is the time of year many families share their good fortune with others. The Santa Fund, The Toy Lift and Stony Point’s food drive are good examples of this. No matter whether it’s a holiday, a birthday or just for fun, gift giving to your family members and others can be a difficult task! Here are some suggestions I’ve taken from the National Association of Elementary School Principals that can be helpful all year long when choosing gifts. Play Together : Look for toys and games that require family participation. Among the best are ones that combine fun and learning. Card and board games, dominoes, chess and word and spelling games are a few examples. Make Something Happen : Toys that promote creativity are good, too. Providing art supplies, puppets, tools, or gardening equipment are easy ways to stimulate imagination. Ready, Set, Action : Children need physical exercise. A ball, bat, junior golf clubs, tennis racquet, skates, jump rope, hula hoop, "frisbee" or badminton set are great for encouraging physical fitness. Make Reading a Gift : Give a subscription to an age-appropriate magazine such as Sports Illustrated for Kids, Ranger Rick

http://qrc.depaul.edu/jcasey/Homework3.htm
Homework 3: More Practice with Graphing All work must be prepared in a Word document. Remember to label your answers according to the question numbers (1, 2a, 2b, etc.). This assignment is due at the beginning of class, April 22nd (print and hand in a hard copy).
(Note: You may do your homework individually or work in groups. Remember that all group submissions must include a signed statement that all members of your group participated fully in the assignment.) The purpose of this homework is to give you more practice with making and interpreting graphs and charts, including labeling, and scaling. In the exercises below, you will be asked to make graphs of several different data sets using Excel's chart wizard. You will need to decide how best to format and label them. For help, you can look at Tips on Making Good Charts and Graphs You may also look back at in-class Activity 2b from Week 2 for step-by-step instructions Pie Chart. Open the data file US Population By Race.xls
  • Using Excel's chart wizard, make a pie chart of the population data for the year 2000 only. Your chart must include a legend, data labels, and appropriate title. Copy and paste this chart into your word document. In a couple of sentences, describe what the chart tells you about the racial composition of the US population in 2000.

From left to right: James Dobbins, Laurie McMillin, Kai Li, Taylor Allen, Eve Sandberg, Sheila Jager, David Kelly. All have Ph.D.s, but seven Oberlin professors spent the summer doing homework. One even went to summer school! Why? Funded by curriculum development grants from the Freeman Foundation, they were designing new courses or enhancing existing ones to include content on East and Southeast Asia. The curriculum development awards are part of a $1 million grant to Oberlin College through the Freeman Foundation's Undergraduate Asian Studies Initiative, which is designed to strengthen the study of Asia. The grant is also supporting visiting Asian faculty members, new course offerings, and cultural programming.

Last updated Jul 2003 WELCOME! TANSI! This page will explain the ELA 92 Program Language and Learning
Language is a defining characteristic of human beings. Through a variety of social situations, students learn about language, words, sentence patterns, intonational patterns, and nonverbal cues, and they grow in their ability to use language. By interacting with others, children become confident users of language and versatile thinkers. Clearly, "language development is a long-term process that is interdependent with world experience and home and community language environments, attitudes, and opportunities to use and practice language" (Gambell, in Courtland and Gambell, 1994, p. 42).
A curriculum that develops students' facility with language provides students with the opportunities to:
    • learn to use language in a variety of meaningful ways considering and determining audience, purpose, and format

    http://www.ucls.uchicago.edu/High/cos/english.html
ENGLISH Our writing program focuses on the process of writing an analytical paper. We help our students learn how to find a suitable thesis; how to research a text to find support for the thesis; how to narrow or expand the thesis to fit the assignment; how to organize according to what the thesis says and to its logic; how to use rough drafts to develop the analytical position, to discover the information that must be in the introduction, to check for errors in grammar, usage, and mechanics, and to come to a conclusion that follows the positions and the logic of the paper. Just as in our class discussions, we insist that our students in their writing support all analytical ideas by quoting directly from the text or texts under consideration. We also involve our students in literature through writing personal essays, short stories, and poems, especially as these discuss or develop issues closely linked to those of a text under study. Students must be enrolled and earn credit in an English class during each quarter they are enrolled at University High School. Freshmen and sophomores take year-long courses. Juniors and seniors may elect to take Analysis and Composition, a year-long course, during either their third or fourth year at University High School. Juniors and seniors not taking Analysis and Composition elect one of three courses each quarter.
English l is a year-long course that introduces its students to the analysis of literature and the fundamentals of writing. In the past few years, students have studied such major works of literature as parts of Genesis

Engaging my historian's instincts, I decided to use primary sources as the basic reading assignments for examining a series of thematic topics that would address questions of identity: Native Americans, immigration and ethnicity, African-Americans, labor, and women. The primary sources would then be the building blocks for the basic writing assignment in my classes: a series of short papers I called "analytical summaries" that would, ideally, allow students to explain the meaning of a particular reading within a cultural or historical context. I used a very good two-volume set, edited by Robert D. Marcus and David Burner, entitled
