IN NATIVE AMERICAN INDIAN STUDIES
The Five College Certificate in Native American Indian Studies provides students with the opportunity to acquire a knowledge and understanding of the development, growth, and interactions of the indigenous peoples and nations of the Western Hemisphere. The program emphasizes the many long histories of Native American Indians as well as their contemporary lives and situations. A holistic and comparative interdisciplinary approach underlies the Certificate Program's requirements, enabling students to become familiar with the diversity of indigenous lifeways, including cultural forms, institutions, political economies, and modes of self-expression. In addition to this broader perspective, the program places some emphasis on the Native peoples of the Northeast so that Five College students can become acquainted with the history, culture and presence of indigenous peoples in this region. Requirements At least seven courses are required for completion of the Five College Certificate in Native American Indian Studies: a foundation course plus six additional courses, with no more than three of the seven courses from a single discipline. A student's program must be approved by the program advisor from her or his campus.

"Dream Catchers: A Transfer Guide for Native American College Students with Special Assistance
for Those from Tribal Colleges" Did you attend a Tribal College?
There are thirty-one U.S. tribally controlled colleges for Native Americans located on or near reservations offering two year and in some cases four year academic degrees and vocational training. Attaining higher education is most important to the American Indian community's goal of self-determination.
Did you have aspirations toward a career?
Reservations contain 10% of the known natural resources in the nation. To control and manage them and the important ecological systems on their land, American Indians need the education required for these positions. Currently one of four jobs on reservations, mostly professional positions requiring college degrees, are held by non-Indians. The current small percentage of Indian teachers is expected to drop as low as 5% in the near future.
Did you think about acquiring a higher degree?
Then you most likely had to consider changing colleges after graduation from a tribal or community college. Students who go from one college to another (for whatever reason) are considered to be

SCHOLARSHIPS
The American Indian College Fund raises money for 32 tribal colleges located across the United States. Money raised by the Fund is used to support student scholarships and other developmental needs at the tribal colleges and universities. In general, the tribal colleges determine student eligibility for Fund scholarships and award only those students who are currently enrolled at a tribal college. However, partnerships with corporate and private donors have introduced a category of scholarships that are being offered to American Indian students who are attending selected mainstream four-year colleges and universities. These scholarships are administered by the Fund and are generally based upon merit and demonstrated financial need. For more information on the scholarship opportunities available through the American Indian College Fund and the tribal colleges, please contact our Scholarship

http://www.aihec.org/college.htm
Tribal Colleges were created in response to the higher education needs of American Indians, and generally serve geographically isolated populations that have no other means accessing education beyond the high school level. They have become increasingly important to educational opportunity for American Indian students, an importance they have achieved in a relatively brief period of time. Tribal Colleges are unique institutions that combine personal attention with cultural relevance, in such a way as to encourage American Indians - especially those living on reservations - to overcome the barriers they face to higher education.
