Detailed description of 16 national parks and 10 national Reserves
http://www.worldheadquarters.com/cr/protected_areas/
costa rica national parks reserves in costa rica
National Parks and Reserves in Costa Rica. The protection of Costa Rica's natural heritage is managed by the respective national parks and reserves. These areas protect many species of mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, fresh and salt water fish, and a vast number of identified vascular plants-representing 4% of the world's total floral and faunal species. In addition, these management groups protect examples of almost all the existing natural habitats such as deciduous forests, mangrove swamps, rain forests, herbaceous swamps, cloud forests, paramos, hilillo forests and marshlands. They also protect areas of historical and archaeological interest, such as pre-Columbian settlements and early battlefields, as well as beautiful areas of scenic interest, such as beaches, valleys and waterfalls. But above all, the areas of particular interest to the conservationist are the zones which protect the last remaining examples of Central American dry forest and the beaches where the sea turtles nest. The Costa Rica Tourist Board (ICT), as the entity in charge of tourist activities, has assumed the task of seeing that tourism directly contributes to conservation. To achieve this goal, ICT cooperates with other State institutions such as the Ministry of Natural Resources, Energy and Mines (MIRENEM)-whose National Parks Service manages 20 national parks, 8 biological reserves and a national monument. In addition, the Forestry Service has responsibility for 27 protected areas and 9 forest reserves while the Wildlife Office manages 9 wildlife refuges. The 74 units, covering an area 1,154,945 hectares, represent 25% of the national territory (as of August, 1993), which means that Costa Rica has a larger percentage of its total area set aside in parks and preserves than any other country on Earth.

Provides information about the location, geography, climate and national parks for this country.

Exploring Kenya
Africa Homepage Geographia Homepage K enya is still the primary focus of all adventure travel in Africa. It is one of the finestand undoubtedly the most famoussafari destination in the world. Safari , however, is by no means the only reason to visit Kenya, for the attractions of its rich culture and diverse environments are considerable. Kenya is situated right along the equator, on the eastern coast of the African continent. Its coastal region is on the southeast, and to the east lies Somalia. Ethiopia is to the north, the Sudan to the northwest, and Uganda directly to the west. The southwestern border of the country is marked by Lake Victoria, and southward lies Tanzania. Kenya's geography is marvelously varied. While much of northeastern Kenya is a flat, bush-covered plain, the remainder of the country encompasses pristine beaches, scenic highlands and lake regions, the Great Rift Valley, and the magnificent Mount Kenya. Although Kenya's varied environments experience a wide variety of climate conditions, the temperature remains comfortably warm year-round. Much of Kenya experiences heavy rainfall from March through May and, to a lesser extent, from October through December. The best time for most outdoor acitivities (including safari and mountain climbing) is during the dry season (June-September).

Starting Point New Zealand National Parks download Internet Explorer 4 for free?
Abel Tasman National Park covers 22,541 ha of bush country along the shores of Tasman Bay in Nelson, including offshore islands and hundreds of bays and beaches along the broken coastline. The smallest of the country's 13 national parks, it was opened in December 1942, the 300th anniversary of the visit to Tasman Bay of Dutch explorer, Abel Janzoon Tasman, the first European to visit NZ. Botanically the park is of special interest because its bush is a blend of the natural cover of both the North and South Islands, a rare if not unique phenomenon. Kiwimate's comments A park for people of all ages, with coastal walking and tramping, fishing, sailing, sea kayaking, (an activity I recommend) and inland tracks and caves (experienced cavers only). The coast track, an easy walk which takes 3-5 days to complete offers spectactular scenery both forest and shoreline. There are excellent camping sites secluded away in the bush or if you prefer, cabins with fresh water, cooking facilities and bunks. The best time to visit is during the summer months November- March. K.M.

About Paparoa National Park
Paparoa national park is one of New Zealands smallest at 30,000 hectares and is perhaps most famous for its pancake rocks of Dolomite point. Given National park status in 1987, after proposals to log the lowland forests during the 1970's were met with swift and vigorous action from environmental groups. The unique landscape of the park is caused by millions of years of buckling, which created it's deep limestone canyons, high sculptures mountains and its elaborate system of caves. The mild climate, heavy rainfall and fertile soils have encouraged a lush inland forest of podocarps, beech and broadleaf trees, this lowland forest supports the high density of native forest birds (the highest concentrations recorded in New Zealand) that can be found within the park. Tui, bellbirds and kereru (New Zealand pigeon) migrate seasonally between coastal and upland forests, the harsh whistling cry of the great spotted kiwi may also heard during the night. · A small park at 30,000 hectares.

Arthurs Pass
About Arthurs Pass National Park To the west of Christchurch is Arthurs pass, perhaps Canterburys finest treasure and a playground for many Cantabrians. Arthurs pass originally used as a route by Maori to reach the west coast, and during the gold rush day's Europeans built a coach road to connect the rich gold fields of the west coast to Christchurch. The township of arthurs pass offers a base for many walks suited for all levels, the east side of the alps is predominantly dry beech forest whereas the west side is broad leaf podocarp forest and is significantly wetter. Alpine plants grow in profusion above the bush line and this is one place where they can seen quite easily on a short walk off the road. Keas are common in the park, these cheeky parrots are entertaining but can be destructive, eating the rubber seals on cars seems to be a favorite meal among these delightful alpine parrots.

136. Northwest Territories Parks
Hiking summary for Wood Buffalo and Nahanni national parks.

Hiking in the Northwest Territories
Wood Buffalo National Park
Wood Buffalo National Park straddles the boundary between the Northwest Territories and northern Alberta. This park, 44,800 square kilometers (17,300 square miles) was created in 1922 to protect the last remaining wild herd of wood bison. Happily, there are now over 4,000 wood buffalo in the park, the world's largest free roaming herd. Much of the park is a flat glacial plain know as the Alberta Plateau. The forest in this area is typical of the boreal forest zone consisting primarily of spruce, jack pine and tamarack. Moose, woodland caribou and black bears also inhabit this land. Wood Buffalo National Park has the distinction of being the only known breeding ground of the endangered whooping crane. The Salt River trail is one of the park's better known walks. It features a 7.5 kilometer (4.6 mile) North Loop and also a 9 kilometer (5.5 mile) South Loop, through terrain having many caves, sinkholes and underground streams. Longer overnight trails can be found but trail development is still in its infancy so be prepared to use map and compass for more complete exploration of this area. The park can be reached via the Mackenzie Highway to Hay River and Highway 5 to Fort Smith which is 36 kilometers (22 miles) east of the park.
Nahanni National Park
Nahanni National Park is a 4,760 square kilometer (1,840 square mile) wilderness area located in the southwest corner of the Northwest Territories. The South Nahanni River flows over 320 kilometers (200 miles) through the park from the Selwyn Mountain range to the Franklin Mountains near the southeast park boundary. A breathtaking waterfall of some 90 meters (300 feet) called Virginia Falls can be found on this river. The park is also known for its hotsprings, Sulphur Hotsprings at the lower mouth of the first canyon, Wild Mint Mineral Springs near Flat River and Rabbitkettle Hotsprings in the northwest.
