US National Parks
The National Parks of the United States represent an extraordinary variety of pristine natural environements at the scale of a continent. This image collection is the result of a project to photograph in depth each of the National Parks with the high level of detail made possible by a large format 5x7 camera. In the summer of 2002, I achieved the goal of visiting each of the 58 US National Parks. This gallery currently features more than 3500 pictures, making it an unique site on the web, but this is still on-going work: watch for new images, interpretative text, and photographic tips. New on our web site:
Imagine a website with information about every public land unit in the State of Alaska. It could provide answers to all of the most frequently asked questions that anyone coming to Alaska could pose. It could show you maps of each of Alaska's regions and link you to the homepages of the largest and most remote national parks, national forests, wildlife refuges, state parks, and wild and scenic rivers in the country. Planning your trip would be easier than frying up a shortstack of sourdough pancakes.
Perhaps you want to know what it's like to raft the Tatshenshini/Alsek Rivers (or even just pronounce them); you could plan a bear viewing adventure to world famous Katmai National Park and Preserve; or you just might want to reserve a quiet, remote cabin for you and your family to enjoy, like the one on Lower Russian Lake. Whatever your activities, wouldn't it be nice to have all the options organized in one convenient website?

Working for Water
Welcome to the Weed Warriors website, home of Working for Water at South African National Parks . Follow the trials and victories of our intrepid weed warriors as they battle the often beautiful but deadly invading alien plants that threaten the water integrity and biodiversity of our national parks. The biggest global threat to biodiversity is habitat degradation, caused mainly by the activities of people and their ever-increasing demands on the environment. Second to habitat degradation is the threat from alien invader organisms - those plants, animals and insects that, when placed outside their range of natural occurrence, multiply unchecked because they encounter few or no natural enemies. In the national parks of South Africa, the single biggest threat to biodiversity comes from these invading alien organisms. The Working for Water (WfW) programme, in partnership with

Photo by Adrian Hepworth While much of Costa Rica has been stripped of its forests, the country has managed to protect a larger proportion of its land than any other country in the world. In 1970 there came a growing acknowledgment that something unique and lovely was vanishing, and a systematic effort was begun to save what was left of the wilderness. That year, the Costa Ricans formed a national park system that has won worldwide admiration. Costa Rican law declared inviolate 10.27 percent of a land once compared to Eden; an additional 17 percent is legally set aside as forest reserves, "buffer zones," wildlife refuges, and Indian reserves. Throughout the country representative sections of all the major habitats and ecosystems are protected for tomorrow's generations. The National Conservation Areas System (SINAC; see below) protects more than 186 areas, includingat press time32 national parks, eight biological reserves, 13 forest reserves, and 51 wildlife refuges. Besides providing Costa Ricans and foreign travelers with the privilege of admiring and studying the wonders of nature, the national parks and reserves protect the soil and watersheds and harbor an estimated 75 percent of all Costa Rica's species of flora and fauna, including species that have all but disappeared in neighboring countries. Costa Rica National Parks National Wildlife Refuge: This nearly 10,000 hectare refuge is important as a wintering site for migrant waterfowl, as well as a year-round habitat for resident wetland species. From October to April, when the migrant birds are at the refuge, the variety of species and sheer quantity of individuals creates a spectacle that even non-birdwatchers will marvel at. Among the many birds usually present then are: Wood Stork, White Ibis, Glossy Ibis, Black-necked Stilt, Anhinga, Black-bellied Whistling-Duck, Snail Kite, American Widgeon, Northern Shoveler, and Blue-winged Teal. One species that birdwatchers hope to see here is the Nicaraguan Grackle, since in Costa Rica it is found only in marshy areas just south of Lake Nicaragua. Getting there: Fishing: Climate: Arenal National Park: Undisputedly one of Costa Rica's foremost tourist attractions, the highly eruptive Arenal Volcano is the centerpiece of this new national park declared in October of 1994. In addition to including in the national park system what is currently one of the world's most active volcanoes, the area now under park service protection encompasses the watersheds of several rivers and streams that flow into Lake Arenal , the country's most important source of hydroelectric power.

Jasper National Park Jasper National Park is the largest of Canada's Rocky Mountain parks. Jasper encompass 4200 square miles of broad valleys, mountains, glaciers, forests, meadows and wild rivers along the eastern slopes of the Rockies in western Alberta. There are over 660 miles of hiking trails, and guided tours to glaciers are provided by park services. Large numbers of elk, bighorn sheep, mule deer, grizzly bear, mountain lions, wolves and wolverines make their home in Jasper National Park, thus making the park one of the great protected ecosystems remaining in the Rocky Mountains. Willmore Wilderness Park, Alberta Willmore is a gentle wilderness located on the Eastern Slopes of the Rocky Mountains. Almost as large as Jasper, but not as trekked this park offers a unique walking and light mountain climbing experience. It's characterized by willow and grass valleys, enclosed by open, easy-to-climb foot ridges. Willmore has earned the distinction of "Walking in the Sky Country," because of the gentleness of its slopes and large basins. 100. Alaska National Parks And Forests - Bell's Alaska Canada Travel Guide
Includes indepth descriptions of towns, highways, ferries, history, accommodations, camping, railroads, fishing, visitor attractions and what to see and do.
http://www.alaskan.com/bells/parks.htm
National Parks By the stroke of a pen on December 1, 1978, President Jimmy Carter designated 56 million acres of Alaska as national monuments, creating 14 new monuments and enlarging three existing ones. The act more than doubled the size of the national park system, and set aside some little known, but highly significant, lands for enjoyment by present and future generations. Some of the land affected by the law-for example, a 550,000-acre addition to Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve-simply expanded the acreage of a highly visual and popular visitor area, which can be seen from the deck of a cruise ship or tour boat. But in many more cases, the law designated vast areas that are little more than names on a map: Cape Krusenstern National Monument, Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve, Aniakchak National Monument. Today, these areas are accessible primarily to those who are willing to take to a charter plane, a canoe, or an unmarked trail to do their exploring.
