The refuge protects Sheyenne Lake, Coal Mine Lake and a marsh. The area has about 300 acres of dense nesting cover, 300 acres of open water and 200 acres of excellent marsh. Fishing is allowed on Coal Mine Lake, except during the waterfowl hunting season when the lake becomes a sanctuary.
