The Martin Luther King We Remember

By Adam Wolfson and Daniel Patrick Moynihan Forty years ago this summer, Martin Luther King, Jr., stood at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial and delivered his "I Have a Dream" oration. But despite the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday and the passage of time, King's significance remains a point of contention. Do people really know what they are celebrating on the third Monday of every January? Though the search for the "real," flesh-and-blood King is well-intentioned and has added immensely to the knowledge of King and his times, it has also paradoxically obscured the King who mattered to Americans. In the recounting of his marital infidelities, acts of plagiarism, and ties to (former) members of the American Communist Party, people have lost sight of why he was lionized in his own day and is still remembered for his political achievements and rhetorical gifts.

Native American Holidays In Your School
YOU can make this happen! In our experience, most teachers are very interested in the truth of the history of Native people in this country and are anxious to receive appropriate material for their teaching experiences. By delivering this letter to your school or your children's teacher, you can set them on the course of exploring Native Americans as Native Americans see themselves, rather than from the point of view of most texts that explain the history of the US only from the perspective of the victors of the wars that took place here. At the same time, you will bring recognition of the extent of the work that has been done towards making a Native American Holiday a reality and will perhaps encourage them to taking those steps themselves. Lets raise some awareness out there! Do your bit and either copy and paste the letter below and print it out for schools everywhere, or download a copy from the file provided. The Indian Caucus has heard us loud and clear, they are fully aware that the people want this holiday to become a reality! They need Tribal support to show Congress that the Indian Nations are behind this issue too. With this support congress will have to acknowledge that the majority of Americans are for this holiday. After this announcement you will receive three more one will be The Cherokee Nation Resolution, United Native America Resolution and a letter to congress members. Copy these letters and send them to your Tribal Nation to use as a reference to the holiday issue.

American Mother's Day is a national holiday in large part due to the efforts of Anna Jarvis, a native of Grafton, West Virginia. After her mother, Anna Reese Jarvis, died in 1905, Ms. Jarvis set took on the challenge of establishing a holiday to honor American mothers. In 1908, ceremonies were held in Grafton and in Philadelphia to honor her mother, whose favorite flower, the carnation, was displayed. Ms. Jarvis's ambitious letter-writing campaign saw its first broad success with the pronouncement of state holidays in West Virginia and Oklahoma in 1910. Just three years later, in 1913, the House of Representatives passed a resolution asking all federal government officials to wear a white carnation on Mother's Day. The carnation remains the traditional flower of the holiday, with red carnations for living mothers and white for those who are deceased. A year later, in 1914, Congress passed a Joint Resolution declaring the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day.

Massachusetts was the first colony to legalize slavery by statute. September 13. The first documented attempt at a rebellion by slaves took place in Gloucester County, Virginia. Maryland was the first state to try to discourage by law the marriage of white women to black men. February 18. The Quakers of Germantown, Pennsylvania, passed the first formal antislavery resolution. April 7. A slave insurrection occurred in New York City, resulting in the execution of 21 African Americans. History:
A cornucopia, also called a horn of plenty, is a symbol of abundance taken from an ancient legend. Thousands of years ago, the people of Greece believed that their god, Zeus, was reared by a beautiful maiden. As the story goes, she fed the infant Zeus an endless supply of goat's milk from a cornucopia, or goat's horn. As centuries passed, most people forgot this ancient legend, but the cornucopia remained a symbol of an endless supply of food or drink. As the history of the United States unfolded, the cornucopia became a symbol for Thanksgiving, the day set aside in thanks for abundance.

The Pilgrims' 1621 Thanksgiving
The tradition of the Pilgrims' first Thanksgiving is steeped in myth and legend. Few people realize that the Pilgrims did not celebrate Thanksgiving the next year, or any year thereafter, though some of their descendants later made a "Forefather's Day" that usually occurred on December 21 or 22. Several Presidents, including George Washington, made one-time Thanksgiving holidays. In 1827, Mrs. Sarah Josepha Hale began lobbying several Presidents for the instatement of Thanksgiving as a national holiday, but her lobbying was unsuccessful until 1863 when Abraham Lincoln finally made it a national holiday with his 1863 Thanksgiving Proclamation Today, our Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November. This was set by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1939 (approved by Congress in 1941), who changed it from Abraham Lincoln's designation as the last Thursday in November (which could occasionally end up being the fifth Thursday and hence too close to Christmas for businesses). But the Pilgrims' first Thanksgiving began at some unknown date between September 21 and November 9, most likely in very early October. The date of Thanksgiving was probably set by Lincoln to somewhat correlate with the anchoring of the Mayflower at Cape Cod, which occurred on November 21, 1620 (by our modern Gregorian calendarit was November 11 to the Pilgrims who used the Julian calendar).

Part I: The Reconstruction of American Society, 1865-1920s Lecture 01
Reconstructing the Nation

America has been split apart by three major wars: in the 1770's the American Revolution; in the 1970's the Vietnam War; and, in the middle of this period, the Civil War. Each war has dramatically changed the generation engaged in battles as well as the generations that followed. Lecture #01 will examine the repercussions of the Civil War, its effects on the American people, and the agreements and disagreements within the nation over the meanings of "Reconstruction."
See Calendar for course outline and lecture topics

Lecture 02

The "New South"
By the late 1860s, some Southerners were already calling for a more diversified economy cotton was no longer "king." Increasingly there was a move from farm to factory, and many people encouraged industrialization in the South and an increased capital investment in the Southern economy from outside sources. This lecture explores the economic transformation and the racial politics of the "New" South after the Civil War.
