Additional Information THE CURRICULUM s a Junior school, we do place a greater emphasis on the teaching of basic skills, particularly of literacy and numeracy. Integral to our teaching of these, is the National Literacy and Numeracy Strategy which is fully implemented in the school, allowing for daily lessons in each of these subject areas.
Pupils are taught in mixed ability classes for all subjects in Years 3, 4 and 5. In most year groups, pupils are set by ability for Maths, English and in Year 6, Science. Children also undertake foundation subjects and themes are taught covering Geography, History, Art, Music, Personal and Social Education and Physical Education. These topic based subjects are carefully planned by the teachers in each year group so that children experience all the skills, concepts and areas of knowledge set out in the National Curriculum. A variety of teaching styles and approaches are used.

How Can I Teach My Students LabVIEW?
National Instruments has everything you need to teach your students LabVIEW, from student software, to textbooks, to instructor materials with homework exercises. All of these materials were developed with these goals in mind:
  • Making LabVIEW easy to learn Saving you time Fitting a student's budget
Teach LabVIEW in 3 or 6 Hours
National Instruments understands you cannot devote all of your class time to teaching a software package, so we developed presentations for teaching LabVIEW in 1 or 2 weeks of class time. Each presentation is FREE and comes with instructor slides and homework exercises for the students to complete outside of class. Online Tutorials
Online tutorials make a great homework assignment for students to complete before beginning the 3-hour or 6-hour course. Every tutorial is FREE, typically takes 30 to 60 minutes to complete, and is an ideal way for students to familiarize themselves with LabVIEW prior to the lecture or laboratory.

Why Should I Teach My Students LabVIEW?
LabVIEW is an easy-to-use, interactive, graphical programming language that is ideal for engineers and scientists. Using LabVIEW, students can write sophisticated programs and applications in a shorter amount of time without needing a computer science degree. In addition, teaching LabVIEW has the following benefits:
  • LabVIEW is a broad engineering tool that can be applied to disciplines throughout engineering and science LabVIEW has built-in measurement and analysis functionality to provide students with a hands-on learning experience LabVIEW provides open connectivity to leading engineering tools such as Multisim, Mathcad, Mathematica, Excel, and more LabVIEW is easy to learn and use so you can focus more of your time on teaching theory, and less on teaching programming LabVIEW is widely used in industry and is a valuable, employable skill for students to learn

Whole-school INSET
Looking for something different for a whole-school INSET? We offer an action-packed one-day programme at the Museum, focusing on how you can use the galleries effectively to support the National Curriculum. The content can be tailored to your school's particular needs or scheme of work. The day starts with an introductory talk explaining the resources available at the Museum, highlighting key links to the National Curriculum and suggesting strategies for working in the galleries with pupils. You then watch a stunning large format film in the Museum's IMAX cinema, see a science show, meet a drama character and become familiar with the exhibitions and hands-on galleries.
Cost: £50 per school (unlimited places)
If you would like to discuss setting up a session, please contact Sarah Leonard , tel. 020 7942 4750.
One day courses 2003-2004

Nursery Nursing (NNEB)
Harlow College Jo Parry Harlow is a large FE college providing the full range of post 16 courses, including GCSE, A level and a variety of vocational courses. Who Went? On Wednesday, 19th November 1997, we accompanied a group of 35 students to the Science Museum. They were in the first and second year of the Diploma in Nursery Nursing (NNEB) studying childcare and development of children up to the age of 7 years 11 months. The students were all female and aged between 16 and 21 years. What did the Museum offer? The purpose of the trip was to visit Launch Pad and The Garden to provide the students with experiences relevant to a variety of course modules.(Editorial note: visits to Launch Pad and the Garden must be booked in advance via the Booking Office (020 7942 4777) It was expected that they would gain first hand practical experience of activities suitable for children under the age of eight. It was intended that students should have the opportunity to relate theory to practice through their own involvement. The students were also gaining ideas for supporting the practical realisation of areas of the National Curriculum at Key Stage 1 and the Desirable Outcomes for Learning, as well as informing and consolidating their own practical experience of working with young children.

50 Ways to Teach Them Grammar
The Washington Post April 11, 1996
Diane Ravitch
Nonresident Senior Fellow Economic Studies and Governmental Studies
Diane Ravitch One theme was repeatedly sounded at the recent education summit in Palisades, N.Y.: National standards are dead. Apparently, the United States should have 50 state standards or even 16,000 local standards. But not national standards. The governors, Democratic and Republican, said it; the president said it. And they are all wrong. We already have a national curriculum, and it is not a very good one. In most subject areas, the textbooks and tests are indistinguishable from each other. The informal national curriculum is based on minimum competencies, and for most students, expectations are consistently low. Brown Center on Education Policy If we fail to identify these principles and spell them out, how will our children learn them? Students who take advanced placement tests, the SAT, the International Baccalaureate and the National Assessment of Educational Progress are expected to meet high standards in the major subject areas; none of these tests pretends that there is Oregon math, New York science and Nebraska English. Mathematics and science work according to the same principles regardless of the city, state or nation. The airplane that just flew over my house doesn't care what country it is in; it works the same way in Austria, Nigeria and Japan as it does in the United States. Students in my neighborhood need to know exactly the same mathematics and science that are taught in the best schools in other cities, states and nations.

In 2000, the review of the national curriculum emphasised creativity as an important aim. The Secretary of State for Education and Skills asked QCA to follow up this review by investigating how schools can promote pupils' creativity through the national curriculum.
What did we do?
We focused on key stages 1, 2 and 3. In the first year of the project, we looked at how other countries were promoting creativity. We looked at their policies and curriculum requirements, and analysed a wide range of literature and research findings. In the second year, we worked with 120 teachers in England to investigate how they could develop pupils' creativity through their existing schemes of work and lesson plans. We adopted the definition of creativity in 'All our futures: Creativity, culture and education' (DfEE, 1999), a report from the National Advisory Committee (see What is creativity?
