Joe's Soldiers This site is dedicated to all those brave souls who march off to war for their country and kin. You will note that the following dioramas depict those who actually had to fight these wars...not the troublemakers who started them in the first place....they were almost never seen on the front lines!
This "Charge of Prussian Hussars" illustrates how motion is conveyed by figure placement in a diorama
This Bunker Hill "cannon blast" scene demonstrates the "stop action" quality of dioramas
Look for scenes of individual combat within the larger dioramas like this cavalry duel at Salamanca Can you guess the military units and figure manufacturers?
See "Soldier Quiz" page for the answers. Try to guess the military units represented, and the various manufacturers....look out for some tricky conversions as well. Joe's Soldiers Visitors to the site. . Email me your thoughts and comments at joecar123@comcast.net

Old war's victims forgotten no longer [Privateers of War of 1812 buried in Halifax] Colin Nickerson, Boston Globe Staff, 5/12/2000 Halifax, Nova Scotia - Except for the name, there is nothing to suggest the sad history of Deadman's Island . No plaques, no crosses, no mounds. Just 2.5 acres of forlorn bogland surmounted by a spruce knoll. The site isn't even a true island but a spit of land jutting into Halifax Harbor's Northwest Arm. But in this unhallowed ground, forgotten by the country that sent them off to fight, lie the bodies of 188 American sailors and soldiers taken prisoner by British regulars and Canadian colonial forces during the War of 1812 ''No doubt their loved ones wept, but they seem to have vanished from the memory of the US,'' said Guy MacLean, a leader of the Northwest Arm Heritage Association and one of the Halifax residents whose recent fight to save Deadman's Island from development ended up pricking the conscience of American veterans groups and, finally, the US government. ''What started as a very local controversy over this land became a history lesson that reverberated on both sides of the border,'' MacLean said.

Duke Charles Theodor died in 1799, without children. He was inherited by Max IV. Joseph, since 1795 Duke of , a hollow title as that country was occupied by the French. In earlier years he had served in the French army. As Duke of Bavaria, he pursued a policy of leaning both toward France and Prussia , to counterbalance Austria 's influence; Austria (which as late as 1798 had occupied Bavarian territory) recognized his succession and made no attempt to annex Bavarian territory. In 1799 Bavaria joined the Second Coalition ( Second War of the Coalition ); in 1800 it signed a treaty with England which resulted in subsidies for Bavaria. In 1799-1800 Bavaria partially was occupied by the French, partially by the Austrians; in fall 1800, Bavaria opened negotiations with France and withdrew her troops from the Imperial army. The Treaty of Luneville 1801 left Bavaria's borders unchanged. In 1800 the French razed the fortress of Ingolstadt.

Wars of Liberation . The Spanish War went very badly for the French; the Spanish, hopelessly outgunned, fought using guerilla tactics which the French were unaccustomed to. The war dragged on until 1813 when the Spanish, with significant help from the British under the command of Arthur Wellesley, later Duke of Wellington, drove the French over the Spanish border and back into France.

The Prince Regent THE REGENCY PLUME Newsletter is your link to learning more about England's delightful Regency period, when a gentleman was a gentleman all the way down to his polished Hessians...and young ladies still blushed, especially if caught staring overlong at milord's buckram-padded shoulders, or Oh my! his thigh-covered inexpressibles! A Regency romance is romance at its most elegantentertainment of the first order. Whether sweet or sensual, a romp or a mystery, a Regency romance novel transports readers to a colorful time that exists no more, but which takes place in a fascinating world that still exists todayEngland! Most Regency romance authors have spent years researching this long-ago, though hardly forgotten, time period known as the English Regency. And we take great delight in creating fresh new charactersour heroes and heroineswhose lives freely intermingle with those of 'real-life' people like Beau Brummell, Lord Nelson, the Duke of Wellington, or even the Prince Regent. I became so engrossed in my study of the English Regency period, that in 1991, I began to publish a newsletter for other writers and Regency romance fans called THE REGENCY PLUME. THE REGENCY PLUME is now in its 13th year of publication with over 1000 subscribers from all over the world.

On August 3rd, 1815, six and a half weeks after Waterloo, Louis XVIII issued the decree for the dissolution of the Garde Impériale . This was quickly followed by the Royal Ordonnance of August 15th that set in place the "retirement criteria" for Bonapartist officers in the army. In October two special commissions convened and carefully reviewed the conduct of the officer corps from March 20th, 1815 until Waterloo. In 1816, 20,000 officers had been effectively "retired" and reduced to "half-pay" status.
And so the demi-soldes came to be . . . and accompanied their
