The Napoleonic Wars
If you are out searching for a good introduction to the Napoleonic Era then this video from Cromwell Productions will fit the bill nicely. In 50 minutes it presents an overview of the exciting period of Napoleon Bonaparte, his rise and subsequent fall through a nice mixture of historic images, graphics, re-enactment and film footage and interviews with experts. They are Sandhurst's Niall Barr, John Tincey and the doyen of Napoleonic historians, David Chandler. However, given the limited time available - only 50 minutes - some major campaigns are left out or only briefly mentioned. These include the revolutionary wars, the Peninsula, the 1813 liberation of Germany and the 1814 defence of France. The initial part of The Napoleonic Wars looks at Bonaparte's skilful use of the chaos of revolution to rise quickly in the army to a position of power and his realisation from an early time that his would be a life of warfare.

The Napoleonic wars 1803 - 1815 Following the French Revolution, Napoleon I of France began a series of European wars. His aim was the conquest of Europe. In 1803, Britain resumed war against France, following an appeal from the Maltese (objecting to Napoleon's seizure of the island in 1798). In 1805, Napoleon's planned invasion of Britain from Boulogne ended with Nelson's victory at Trafalgar, and in 1806, Napoleon instituted an attempted blockade - 'the Continental System' - to isolate Britain from Europe. This finally collapsed after its rejection by Russia. Napoleon then made the fatal decision to invade Russia and was defeated by the Russian resistance, losing some 380,000 men. Britain, Prussia, Russia, Austria and Sweden formed a new coalition, which defeated Napoleon at the Battle of the Nations at Leipzig, Germany. Napoleon abdicated and was exiled to the island of Elba. He returned to Paris in 1815, but was finally defeated at Waterloo by Wellington and his Prussian allies, on 18 June that year.

Printable Version Forces at the Battle of Waterloo Introduction The Protagonists Napoleon Bonaparte had always been driven by his desire to make France a European empire and was an experienced warlord and leader. He had carried out a coup against the government of the First Republic of France (the 'Directory') in 1799 and established himself as ruler and First Consul, eventually to declare himself First Consul for life and Emperor in 1804. In 1802 the French Republic was officially recognised and the Peace of Amiens signed. Napoleon had higher ambitions and pursued his desire to make France the most powerful country in Europe by conquering other countries including Britain. In 1803, Britain declared war on France and the ensuing 'Napoleonic Wars' were fought between France and various Allied coalitions over the next 11 years. The Allies successfully invaded in 1814 and forced Napoleon to abdicate at the Treaty of Fontainbleau. Napoleon described Britain as 'the most powerful and most constant…of my enemies' The Allied army under the Duke of Wellington was a coalition of British, Dutch, Belgian and German soldiers. Napoleon described Britain as 'the most powerful and most constant … of my enemies'. Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington, had never been beaten by the French and had a reputation as a talented coalition general. He came to prominence in India and then successfully directed the Peninsular Campaign of 1811 when the British went to support Portugal and Spain against Napoleon. He was made a duke at the end of that war and appointed ambassador to the restored Bourbon court in 1814.
