Several research groups in the UWA School of Physics are actively involved with studies of matter with nanometre dimensions. Topics and training in areas of Nanotechnology typically involve knowledge and skills from more than one discipline area. Because of this need for a broad background, training in physics is essential for entry into the field at a professional level.  The following courses are recommended if you wish to follow this career path. Remember, however, that there is always room to redirect your career if you change your mind at a later date.  The recommended nanoscience stream is one of the most flexible offered by physics in that it equips you as a well rounded general physicist, allowing a broad range of career options.

Nanotechnology, plasma physics and biotechnology: Europe's top teenage scientists cover them all! Brussels, 25 September 2003 Brussels, 25 September 2003 Whether your interest lies in high-fidelity loudspeakers based on plasma technology, a 40-euro scanning tunnelling microscope with applications in nanotechnology, or using genetic engineering to determine intracellular pH, you need look no further than the three first-prize winners of this year's EU contest for young scientists. Two of the winners come from Germany and the other from Hungary, but contestants from several other countries (Czech Republic, Poland, Netherlands, Russia and Switzerland) won second or third prizes in areas as diverse as computing, biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics. (See Annex 1 for details of all prize-winners.)

    Nanoscale physics and nanotechnology
General The activity of the group is in the basic and applied research in the rapidly growing field of the physics of nanostructures, and in nanofabrication methods. In particular we are interested in electrical and thermal transport properties on the sub-micron scale. Besides being very fascinating physics, this research serves a few other important goals: It provides students with experience in the area of physics and technology, which is interesting to industry as well; it also leads to the development of nanofabrication methods, which are or will be used in the semiconductor industry. It provides elegant sensors, which are very small and whose working principles are of quantum mechanical origin. In the experiments we already probe the physical limitations which the industry will soon face when reducing the linewidth of conductors. Our modern nanofabrication laboratory and electrically shielded rooms, with cryostats of sub-100 mK base temperatures, allow us both to fabricate samples and to make efficient in-house measurements.

Boston College researchers are using a million-dollar grant to devise microscopes smaller than a human hair that can return images of the tiniest components of human DNA or the smallest defects in computer semiconductors.Prof. Michael Naughton (Physics), who is teamed on the project with Prof. Krzysztof Kempa (Physics), Prof. John Fourkas (Chemistry), and Senior Research Scientist Wenzhi Li (Physics), compared their nano-scale magnetic microscopy to the technology used by astronomers to record images of outer space - only, in this case, to image inner space.
"When you go to the doctor to get an MRI, you can see an image of your body that reveals muscle tone, and can tell whether and where a tendon is torn," said Naughton.
