Ovambo languages are spoken by more than 80 percent of the population, followed by Nama-Damara with about 6 percent. Kavango and Caprivian languages and Herero, as well as Afrikaans, constitute about 4 percent of home languages. Many Namibians speak two or more indigenous languages and at least a little of two of the three European languages (English, Afrikaans, German) in common use.

    55. Africa: Country Report
Report on how the regional conflict has negatively impacted the media's access to government information.
    http://www.cpj.org/attacks99/africa99/Namibia.html
NAMIBIA Namibia's reputation as a role model for press freedom in southern Africa, thanks largely to its liberal constitution, took another beating in 1999, as both domestic and foreign conflict had negative repercussions on local media.
In January, Prime Minister Hage Geingob admitted in a letter to the independent daily Namibian that the Ministry of Defense was deliberately withholding information from all domestic media concerning Namibia's involvement in the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The prime minister claimed that the Namibian press had published "distortions" about the conflict in the DRC and that news published in the Namibian also appeared on the Internet and was therefore accessible to DRC rebel forces.
In March, Nathaniel Maxuilili, a member of Parliament from the ruling South West African People's Organization (SWAPO), threatened to ban a popular Oshiwambo-language talk show for airing what he called "nonsense" about the country's involvement in the DRC. "If I ask the government to stop [the talk show], it will," said Maxuilili at a Defense Ministry press briefing (reported in the Namibian ), At the same press conference, Maxuilili also reprimanded journalist John Grobler for asking "silly questions" about the role of Namibian troops in the DRC conflict.

The Namibian government resides in the so-called "Tintenpalast" in the centre of the capital Windhoek.
The building dates back to the German colonial era and was officially opened in 1913. At that time the public was considerably agitated by the supposedly unfavourable location of the building at the top of a hill. It would probably be safe from a large surging crowd, people said mockingly. A cable railway should at least be built, they suggested. Soon the building received its nickname 'Tintenpalast' which means 'Ink Palace', taunting the work of the numerous pen-pushers and civil servants, employed in the administration. The name has been kept to this day.

    Republic of Namibia
With the independence of Namibia in 1990, Dr. Sam Nujoma became the first president of the new country. Nujoma represents the "South West Africa People's Organisation", in short SWAPO. It led the longstanding guerilla war against the South African apartheid government, which pursued the politics of racial segregation and racial discrimination. Namibia's independence was initiated by free elections in 1989. For the first time, the black majority had the right to vote. The SWAPO emerged from these elections as the strongest political force. Following this, the legislative assembly unanimously elected Sam Nujoma president.

Namibia aid appeal "ignored" afrol News , 4 May Two months after several UN agencies appealed for US 5.8 million to fund their emergency operations in Namibia, not one single donation has been made. The growing HIV/AIDS infection rate in Namibia, one of Africa's richest countries, is termed "one of the world's forgotten crises." While Namibia may be rich by African standards, the country nevertheless is to poor to handle its current crisis. Drought, floods and a rapidly growing HIV/AIDS pandemic are adding to widespread poverty. In March, the Namibian government asked for international help.
After being virtually ignored in the two months since issuing a US$ 5.8 million emergency appeal for Namibia, two UN aid agencies today drew attention again to the growing humanitarian crisis there, citing the food crisis affecting a third of the country, the rapidly rising rate of HIV infections and overall crushing poverty.
In March the World Food Programme (WFP) and the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) had launched the appeal to help more than 600,000 orphans, vulnerable children and women who were suffering from the combined effects of erratic weather, severe poverty and the worsening HIV/AIDS epidemic, the UN informs today.
