The Country Namibia is known for its contrasting landscapes. The desolate Namib Desert is said to be the oldest in the world, with its high dunes and awe-inspiring sense of space. The central plateau, with its thorn bush savannah and rugged mountains, rising abruptly from the plains, gives way to the majestic Fishriver Canyon in the south. In the north of the country, landscapes range from dense bush and open plains of the great Etosha Pan, to woodland savannah and lush vegetation. Dinosaur footprints preserved in sandstone, prehistoric rock art, the ancient fossil plant, Welwitschia mirabilis, all bare witness to the timelessness of this country. Namibia is divided into 3 distinct topographical regions:
Namib Desert : Long narrow coastal desert 50km-140km, extending along the entire coastline and interspersed with dune belts, dry riverbeds and deeply eroded canyons. Central Plateau: Runs from North to South with an average altitude between 1000-2000 m. This area has breathtaking landscapes, rugged mountain, rocky outcrops, sand filled valleys and endless plains. Kalahari Desert: Long vegetated dunes of red sand extend through this area. It spans dense bush covered plains north east of the Etosha Pan including the high rainfall areas of

South Africa's geography South Africa occupies the southern tip of Africa, its long coastline stretching more than 2 500km from the desert border with Namibia on the Atlantic coast southwards around the tip of Africa and then north to the border with subtropical Mozambique on the Indian Ocean. The low-lying coastal zone is narrow for much of that distance, soon giving way to a mountainous escarpment that separates it from the high inland plateau. In some places, notably the province of KwaZulu-Natal in the east, a greater distance separates the coast from the escarpment. Although the country is classified as semi-arid, it has considerable variation in climate as well as topography. The great inland Karoo plateau, where rocky hills and mountains rise from sparsely populated scrubland, is very dry, and gets more so as it shades in the north-west towards the Kalahari desert. Extremely hot in summer, it can be icy in winter. In contrast, the eastern coastline is lush and well watered, a stranger to frost. The southern coast, part of which is known as the Garden Route, is rather less tropical but also green, as is the Cape of Good Hope - the latter especially in winter. This south-western corner of the country has a Mediterranean climate, with wet winters and hot, dry summers. Its most famous climatic characteristic is its wind, which blows intermittently virtually all year round, either from the south-east or the north-west.

The Department of Geography's Home Page Go to the General Information Page (Recommended after reading the following Preamble). Preamble: The University of Port Elizabeth is a relatively small institution with approximately 5000 students. Of these approximately 250 are enrolled for courses in the Department of Geography, in which the medium of instruction is English. The Department offers courses in the Arts, Science, Economic Sciences, Health Sciences and education faculties, at undergraduate level, and in the Arts and Economic Sciences faculties at postgraduate level (Go to the Course Page . In general, Geography classes are small, making staff-student contact more direct than is possible in many larger institutions. Consequently, through personal contact and discussion it is possible to overcome many problems in their initial stages. The city of Port Elizabeth and the Eastern Cape provide a varied and interesting environment for geographical teaching and research in both the physical and human sectors. Thus fieldwork in the immediate urban environment and further afield plays an important part in the Geography programme. Although the University of Port Elizabeth is only 30 years old it has the facilities offered by many older institutions and in some respects has more complete collections, notably in the library. The Department has its own computer terminals and access to the facilities of the University Computing Centre and the Geographical Information Systems laboratory
