Namibia is named after the Namib desert.
This desert, lying along the south western coast of Africa, is 1 530 km long
and 50 to 140 km wide. It is the oldest desert in the world!
This spectacular desert is just one of many attractions Namibia has to offer:
Etosha national park is one of the best gameparks in Africa. Especially during the dry season the concentration of game at the waterholes must be seen to be believed.
Lion, rhino, elephant, giraffe, zebra, ostrich, all african game is present,
acting out their lives close around you.
Windhoek, the capital city, like most Namibian towns and cities, is neat and modern with a German flavour, left over from colonial times.
The Fish River canyon is the second largest canyon in the world.
The highest sand dunes can be climbed at Sossusvlei.
200 000 seals wait for you at Cape Cross, the largest colony in the southern hemisphere. The cool desert nights can be spent in one of the many hot springs. The salt flats at Walvis Bay are pink with flamingoes. Penguins and seals can be seen. Ghost towns from the diamond rushes wait to be explored.

The ancient African healers had an elaborate materia medica, which consisted of mixtures of various herbs, animal parts, minerals and clays. These and many other components of the natural ecosystem were intrinsically linked to healing in the African world. The utilization of human energy, the natural environment, and the cosmic balance of natural forces are used as tools in African traditional medicine.

Early morning flight from Windhoek to an airfield near Etosha Here you will be collected and transferred to an elegant lodge, next door to Etosha. Enjoy a leisurely lunch followed by a late afternoon game drive.
The Ovambo people consist of 8 kindred tribes: the Ondonga, Ukuanyama, Ukuambi, Ongandjera, Ukualuthi. Ombalanthu and Eunda. Traditionally these tribes could be distinguished by their elaborate hairstyles. The women wear wide red-ochre belts Adorned with elephant hide, ivory and shell, which is said to have mystic significance. Embers of a sacred fire, which is never allowed to die, can be found in a Chiefs kraal. A must for the traveler is to acquire an Ovambo basket; the workmanship lends itself to a truly beautiful finish, among the best in Africa. Not much is truly known of these people, primitive and steeped in superstitions and cruelties, the complexities run deep. Many of the Ovambo men, file their top incisors to form a gap which they believe will let their soul escape, should they die with their teeth clenched.
After breakfast you will be transferred to a traditional guest farm, in the heart of the central region, set amidst 11 000 hectares of unspoiled Savannah with panoramic views of the Kudu mountain. Each tribal group has a special colour for the ceremonial version of their dress; these make a colourful pageant when the Herero gather to honour their ancestors, at the burial place of Okahandja. Ancient belief is that the ancestors descended from a particular tree, which is said the people still pay tribute in passing, an Omumborumbonga tree.

T he team of African Desk The office in Swakopmund African Desk was launched as a travel agency in Namibia in September 2001 and is located in the centre of Swakopmund, a small town at the Atlantic Coast. The business is operated by Elizabeth de Beer, an expert in the travel sector with more than 16 years of experience.
Elizabeth de Beer has made a name for herself as a safari booking officer at Trip Travel in Windhoek and the Swakopmund Information Offfice. She is a mother of three children and culturally rooted with the Damara people.
As a member of a multilingual country with a colonial past, Elizabeth is fluent in English (Namibia's national language), Afrikaans and Damara as well as having a basic knowledge of German. Part of Elizabeth's vision is to let travellers experience the African everyday life and culture.
The Team
"I was born in Swakopmund and grew up with my grandparents on a farm called "Vlakbank". It was very common in those days to stay with grandparents while parents went to work in town. There were a lot of sheep and cows. Milk, cream, butter and biltong (dried sausage) were produced. This farm was close to the riverbank high up in the Namib Desert and has today become part of a Nature Reserve. It has been the heritage of my great-grandfather since 1914. Because it is so peaceful, farm life should never be forgotten with its unspoiled nature and all the many stories that we were told by our grandparents. I would like to share this experience with you as the traveller."

Namibia Tourism Attractions
Namibia is remarkable and unique. It has one of the lowest population densities in the world and bizarre desert scenery. Huge sand dunes, dry desert mountains, and amazing plant and animal life are some of the highlights. Etosha Game Park is one of the best game parks in Southern Africa. It is home to many lions, rhinos, elephants, buffalo and hippos. All sorts of less well known but equally interesting creatures (like bat-eared foxes and honey badgers) are also found there. The peoples of Namibia are diverse and interesting. They include one of the oldest cultures on earth: the San or "Bushman" peoples. The German colonization of Namibia has resulted in a peculiar cultural mix. Parts of the country still have a fascinating German colonial atmosphere and culture.

South Africa l Botswana l Wildlife Safaris l Specials NAMIBIA Namibia with over 100 000 square kilometers in size is a very large country. It is larger than France and Great Britain combined, yet the population is only 1,5 million people. Namibia is a country of contrasts. They are everywhere for everyone to savour and enjoy. Going on safari in Namibia and having the privilege of visiting the Skeleton coast has to be one of the best safaris in Africa. The three dunes of Sossusvlei, Damaraland, the Kaokoveld and Etosha are all places with a difference nowhere else found in the world. Lodge and Accommodation Rating We, at Classic safaris have developed our own rating system, which is probably more stringend than other known hotel ratings. In our ratings, lodge locations, game viewing and eco management are taken into account plus of course the qualification standard of rangers, trackers and the overall service standard of the camp personnel. We also look for lodges with great ambience and friendly hospitality that will make your wildlife safari an incredible African experience, which will be remembered for many years, too come.

Life at the bottom of the world means dancing with strangers, keeping your clothes ironed, and going to a lot of funerals
by Camille Dodero
In the African nation of Namibia, it's unsafe for a carload of females to pick up male hitchhikers even though hitchhiking is a major method of transportation here. So when we, three twentysomething girls, stop for an African woman waiting on the side of the road and an anonymous man pushes past her to stuff his bloodied friend into our back seat, I'm extremely nervous. Namibia gallery
Elephant butts, wily-tongued giraffes, nocturnal fires, and more "I will take the woman," my friend Debbie orders, gesturing from her place in the driver's seat over to the matronly figure standing in the dirt. "Huss-pee-tal!" the anonymous man rages back, ignoring Debbie's demand and squeezing in beside his semi-conscious companion. "Huss-pee-tal!" his sharp syllables repeat. Speeding away, our vehicle scrambles for the nearest hospital, almost immediately reaching 160 kilometers per hour (100 miles per hour), and we veer into that nebulous zone between Good Samaritans and fools.
Namibia. The word evokes a curious state of nonplus: where's that?

"The New Partnership for Africa's Development" (NEPAD) is a strategy document, which reflects a new constellation on the African continent at the beginning of the 21st century. With the transfer to democratic majority rule in South Africa and the collapse of the military dictatorship in Nigeria, two relevant new actors emerged in terms of the continental political agenda. Having both considerable economic weight as regional power houses, their combined annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) represented in 1999 more than half (57%) of the total GDP of Sub Saharan Africa.
South Africa and Nigeria were the main architects, protagonists and stakeholders in the process resulting in NEPAD and advocating it as the blue print for Africa's development. Their combined economic and political relevance gave weight to their initiative, which was actively supported by Algeria, Egypt and Senegal as other core countries in the initiative.
Critical observers question if this is once again old wine in new bottles. And indeed, its catalogue of socio-economic proposals offers hardly any new conceptual approach. It is largely reflecting in a rather uncritical way the dominant neo-liberal paradigm and discourse of the international financial institutions (World Bank and International Monetary Fund). It hence offers no alternatives to the current trends of economic globalisation but instead adheres to the underlying concept of liberalised trade regimes and the dogma of the private economy.

NAMIBIA Namibia is one of the world's most arid countries, yet it has a unique and captivating beauty. The vast Namib Desert occupies much of the territory and gives the nation its name. To the north and east lie rocky deserts with moonscapes, and dry thornveld savannah. The Skeleton Coast is the treacherous stretch of coastline to the north of Swakopmund. The Orange River forms the border with South Africa, and the Kunene and Kavango Rivers run along the northern frontier.
In between there is precious little water at all. Etosha National Park - one of the world's largest and most famous wildlife sanctuaries - is set in the northern savannah region.
The nomadic Himba people live in Damaraland and Kaokoland, where they follow a lifestyle little changed over hundreds of years.
IMPALILA ISLAND LODGE Discover the one island in Africa There is an island in the heart of Africa - a place where two ancient Boabab trees spread their limbs in blessing over the floodplain where two of Africa's mighty meet, the Zambezi and the Chobe. In the backwaters around the island Pygmy Geese search out food. The Mambova Rapids roar out a welcome and rapacious Tiger Fish haunt the white waters. Crocodiles glide silently amongst the lily pads. On the river banks herds of Elephant 200 strong come down for companionship and to bathe and drink.
