Windhoek Culture Situated in Namibia's central highlands, Windhoek, the capital, is an attractive city surrounded by clusters of hills and the impressive Auas and Eros mountains. The height above sea level of 1650m is only slightly less than that of Johannesburg, South-Africa, or Denver, the 'mile-high' city in the United States. The climate is typical of a semi-desert country, with hot days and cool nights. Places of interest The National Museum of Namibia has three main locations in Windhoek the capital city ; the Museum Acre with the bulk of collections, research laboratories, offices and stores, the Owela display center with ethnography and natural history displays, and the Alte Feste display center with history displays and collections. The National Museum is custodian of national cultural and contemporary history, anthropology, archaeology and diverse natural history collections with a strong research and education emphasis. Namibia is the most arid country in southern Africa, and much of its fauna is uniquely adapted to its environment. The natural history collections at the National Museum of Namibia are the national repositories for zoological specimens (some 1.5 million specimens), and serves as a resource for biological systematic. Windhoek - History Millions of years ago a dinosaur walked across a stretch of mud. Namibia has a colourful and turbulent history. In the mid-19th century, German missionaries opened up the interior, paving the way for traders who came later. The annexation of the country by Germany in 1884 accounts for the distinctive German architecture and traditions.
After a turbulent past, the country at last became independent on 21 March 1990, and is now peacefully approaching the twenty-first century became independent in 1990, when South Africa's control was finally diminished by the United Nations and the guerrilla group known as SWAPO (South West Africa People's Organization.) Germany controlled the area until World War I, when South Africa invaded the colony and imposed 75 years of rule. The German influence, their language, architecture, and sense of organization, is still evident, particularly in the country's superior infrastructure, and the restaurants in Windhoek. While the new nation still depends on South Africa for some foodstuff (and wines) the local ranching, fishing industries and mining are productive, along with growing tourism. The desert terrain is good for Precambrian fossils, and scientists from Yale and the American Museum of Natural History explore the limestone deposits of Namibia on an annual basis.

Of the black majority, about two-thirds are Ovambo, with the Kavango, the Herero, the Damara, and the Caprivian peoples following in population size. Other ethnic groups have much smaller populations. Afrikaners and Germans constitute two-thirds and one-fifth of the European population, respectively. Most ethnic Europeans are Namibian citizens, though some have retained South African citizenship. English is the national language, though it is the home language of only about 3 percent of the population. Ovambo languages are spoken by more than 80 percent of the population, followed by Nama-Damara with about 6 percent. Kavango and Caprivian languages and Herero, as well as Afrikaans, constitute about 4 percent of home languages. Many Namibians speak two or more indigenous languages and at least a little of two of the three European languages (English, Afrikaans, German) in common use.

Namibian German culture clings on to African coast
    By Alistair Thomson
REUTERS 5:00 a.m. May 7, 2004 Much of modern-day Namibia was largely ignored by Europeans for most of the next three centuries until the Kaiser claimed its arid expanses off the Atlantic Ocean as German South West Africa, brutally forcing local tribes into submission before losing the colony barely 30 years later in World War One. "If I'd been there, I would have got straight back on the boat and gone home," said a German national now working in the capital Windhoek. Yet more than a century on the Germans are still here, hanging on in this arid expanse with their bratwurst and sauerkraut and welcoming tens of thousands of German tourists. Teutonic gables and church towers pepper modern Windhoek's skyline and once a year local people throng the streets in traditional German dress for the Karnival. The city even holds its own Oktoberfest, an echo of Munich's beer festival. "They found this country, dug their roots into it and they made a living," said Chris Jacobie, executive editor of the DMH Newspaper Group which publishes the Allgemeine Zeitung in Windhoek.

    Namibia History and Culture
History Namibia's first inhabitants were the Bushmen (Sands). The rock paintings in Daramaland bear witness to this period. Around 1300, the Namas and the Damaras came from the north pushing the Bushmen towards the Kalahari Desert. Around 1500, the Owambos settled on the high plateaus and in the Okavongo delta. Around 1600, Herero herdsmen arrived from the north. With the beginning of German migration from 1850 onwards, Germany annexed Namibia and in 1884 made war on the local ethnic groups. By 1907, this war had claimed the lives of half of the Africans. Germany then introduced racial segregation and the exploitation of the diamond mines begun.
