Pictures from Etosha and the Namib Desert THE WILD BEAUTY OF NAMIBIA
Namibia is a country of rugged scenery that at one time was home only to nomadic San Bushmen. Time and nature have created extreme and diverse landscapes of stark beauty in this part of southwest Africa. Inland from the desolate Atlantic coast are sights that include the incredible dunes of the Namib Desert and the vast salt pan and surrounding bush of the wildlife-rich Etosha National Park. Wildlife of Etosha Etosha National Park in Namibia is one of the most important game reserves in Africa. Etosha is centered on a 100 kilometer long clay and salt pan that was created when a vast lake dried up many thousands of years ago. Etosha means 'place of dry water'. The vast white pan with its shimmering mirages contrasts with the surrounding grassland and woodland. Water holes in these surrounding areas are vital to a wide variety of animals including elephants and many of Namibia's rhinos. Giraffes gather at a water hole as the sun sets on Etosha.

Culture
Namibia's population includes at least 11 major ethnic groups, ranging from hunter-gatherers to rural farmers and town dwellers, and the country still bears the influences of its German and Afrikaner colonisers. The 650,000-strong Owambo make up the largest group and live mainly in the north. Other significant tribes include the Kavango, Herero, Himba, Damara, Nama and Basters. A tinier group, the San, once had their own land division system and in the early 19th century were responsible for one of the most extensive pre-colonial trade networks in the region. Although the country is still developing a literary tradition, music, dance, and the visual and architectural arts have long been part of the local culture. Namibia's earliest musicians were the San, whose music emulated the sounds made by animals and was played to accompany dances and storytelling. The early Nama used drums, flutes and stringed instruments; and the later arriving Bantu people added marimbas, gourd rattles and animal horn trumpets. Missionaries established local religious choral groups. Township art, which develops sober themes in a colourful and generally lighthearted manner, first appeared in the townships of South Africa during the apartheid years. It has taken hold in Namibia and is rapidly developing into a popular art form; names to watch for include Tembo Masala and Joseph Madisia. Each ethnic group within Namibia has its own pantry of preferred foods. The staple for the Ovambo people is

Chapter Three People and Culture PEOPLE The population Statistics indicate that the average life expectancy for a Namibian is 65 years. Around 86% of the population are black African in origin, and the remaining 14% are mostly of European or mixed race. However, the statistics say nothing of the charm of many Namibians, and if you venture into the rural areas you will often find that Namibians are curious about you. Chat to them openly and you will find most Namibians to be delightful. They will be pleased to help you where they can, and as keen to help you learn about them and their country as they are interested in your lifestyle and what brings you to their country. Languages Appendix 2 for useful local phrases. Ethnic groups When the colonial powers carved up Africa, the divisions between the countries bore virtually no resemblance to the traditional areas of the various ethnic groups, many of which therefore ended up split between two or more countries. As you will see, there are cultural differences between the groups in different parts of Namibia, but they are only a little more pronounced than those between the states of the USA, or the regions of the (relatively tiny) UK. In Namibia, which is typical of any large African country, historians identify over ten ethnic groups. The main ones are detailed below, arranged alphabetically. Apart from Afrikaans, their languages fall into the two main families mentioned in

    Namibia History
Among the first people to inhabit Namibia were the Bushmen. They were followed much later by the English and Germans, who eventually colonized the area before World War I. After Germany's defeat in the war, the League of Nations entrusted the territory to South Africa, which ruled the country well into the 1980s. South Africa eventually was forced out by a combination of United Nations pressure and guerrilla warfare from the South-West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO). In 1989, elections gave SWAPO a majority of seats in a constituent assembly. The new nation, called Namibia, became independent on 21 March 1990. While continuing to be economically dependent on South Africa (especially for foodstuffs), in good years Namibia is better off than many other countries of the region because of its productive mining, ranching and fishing industries.
