BC number theory programs
bc (version 1.06) is a language that supports arbitrary precision integer arithmetic calculations with interactive execution of statements. It is an idiosyncratic programming language which closely resembles parts of the C language. While it is somewhat slow for some purposes (all code is executed as it is read), the author has found bc very useful in teaching and research. The code is very easy to read and students can see directly how an algorithm has been implemented. It is also useful as a template for harder-to-write, but faster C code.
bc-1.06 is a superior version of the basic bc program which comes with the UNIX operating system.

The Superintendent of Documents classification system was developed in the Library of the Government Printing Office between 1895 and 1903. It was first described in October 1903 by William Leander Post, then in charge of the Library, in the preface to List of Publications of the Agriculture Department 1862-1902, Department List No. 1, issued by the Superintendent of Documents in 1904. Mr. Post gives credit for the foundation of the system (classification by governmental author) to Miss Adelaide R. Hasse, who used government organization authorship to assign classification numbers to a List of Publications of the U.S. Department of Agriculture from 1841 to June 30, 1895. Miss Hasse prepared the list while assistant librarian in the Los Angeles Public Library. It was published by the Department of Agriculture in 1896 as its Library Bulletin No. 9. This system has expanded as the Federal Government has grown. Though still retaining the principles upon which it is based, it has changed in some details and methods of use.

Why is UNIX successful?

The computer world seems to have gone `UNIX mad', and it is hard to understand why. One good reason is the portability of the system but there must be more to it than that. Most people who use the UNIX system seem to like it even though it is full of idiosyncrasies, is terse to the point of unhelpfulness and consists of a very large number of totally forgettable commands. I think that the success of the system is summed up by the following paragraph. The UNIX system is successful because the minimum number of keystrokes achieve the maximum effort. In addition, the system says very little to explain errors and relies on the intelligence of the user to deduce reasons for failure. The statement describes UNIX V6, which we all know is the parent of the UNIX systems running today. History tells us that the guys who designed it did their own typing into the machine. It seems to me that because of this, the main reason that UNIX enjoys/suffers from terse input and output is not through any intellectual design decisions made at some early stage but because the UNIX designers were just bad typists working on slow peripherals. Let us examine the evidence.

By about 3000 BC, the Sumerians were drawing images of tokens on clay tablets. At this point, different types of goods were represented by different symbols, and multiple quantities represented by repetition. Three units of grain were denoted by three 'grain-marks', five jars of oil were denoted by five 'oil-marks' and so on. There are two important limitations to such a system. Firstly, every different type of good for which you want to make a record must have its own distinctive sign. We saw how the increasing complexity of economic life led to a great proliferation of styles of tokens. Each of these tokens now had to be rendered by its own sign, and, of course, all the signs had to be learned. The second limitation concerns not the range of goods available, but their quantity. Recording a delivery or disbursement of three jars of oil by writing the oil-jar symbol three times is simple and convenient. Recording a delivery or disbursement of several hundred jars of oil the same way is no longer so convenient and is also a system to prone to error. The large temple complexes that developed in the late fourth millennium, such as the temple of Inanna at Uruk, were considerable economic enterprises, dealing in large quantities of goods and labor. Gradually, a new system had to be developed. The first great innovation after the act of writing was the separation of the quantity of the good from the symbol for the good. That is, to represent three units of grain by a symbol for 'three' followed by a symbol for 'grain-unit' in the same way that we would write 3 sheep or 3 cows or, more generally, 3 liters or 3 kilometers. A system of this sort is a metrological numeration system, a system of weights and measures. The 'three' symbol is not completely abstract, but is given value by its context, by having the units appended. The development of this concept over the third millennium is a fascinating and extremely complex story that is as yet only partially understood.

Who is a candidate for a heart transplant?
Heart transplantation is a last-resort option for people with heart failure . To be considered for a heart transplant, a person's heart must be unresponsive to other forms of treatment and all other vital organs must be in excellent health. How is heart transplantation done? The surgery must be performed immediately after a suitable donor heart becomes available. The recipient is placed on a heart-lung machine that takes over the functions of the heart and lungs so the diseased heart can be removed and replaced with the new heart. Once the blood vessels are reconnected, the heart is ready to function. Are there any complications? One of the main complications following heart transplantation is rejection. The body's immune system treats the new organ as foreign tissue and produces antibodies to destroy it. Immunosuppressive drugs such as cyclosporine (sie-klo-SPOR-in) are given to suppress this response. In cases of severe rejection, retransplantation may be considered if a new donor can be found. In the past, side effects of anti-rejection drugs kept elderly persons and infants from being recipients of heart transplants. Now, improvements in the field have made it possible for many newborns to those in their seventies to be eligible for a transplant.
