by (Massey University, New Zealand)
Although students of analysis are familiar with real and complex numbers, few treatments of analysis deal with the development of such numbers in any depth. An understanding of number systems at a fundamental level is necessary for a deeper grasp of analysis. Beginning with elementary concepts from logic and set theory, this book develops in turn the natural numbers, the integers and the rational, real and complex numbers. The development is motivated by the need to solve polynomial equations, and the book concludes by proving that such equations have solutions in the complex number system.

Construction of the Number System
Formally (following the mainstream in math) the numbers are constructed from scratch out of the axioms of Zermelo Fraenkel set theory (a.k.a. ZF set theory) [Enderton77, Henle86, Hrbacek84]. The only things that can be derived from the axioms are sets with the empty set at the bottom of the hierarchy. This will mean that any number is a set (it is the only thing you can derive from the axioms). It doesn't mean that you always have to use set notation when you use numbers: just introduce the numerals as an abbreviation of the formal counterparts. The construction starts with N and algebraically speaking, N with its operations and order is quite a weak structure. In the following constructions the structures will be strengthen one step at the time: Z will be an integral domain, Q will be a field, for the field R the order will be made complete, and field C will be made algebraically complete. Before we start, first some notational stuff:
  • a pair
  • an equivalence class
  • the successor of a is
Although the previous notations and the constructions that follow are the de facto standard ones, there are different definitions possible.

Logic System Interrelationships
Record of Recent Changes to these pages. Go directly to List of Logic Systems . (The "guts" of this page.) Table of contents There are lots of logic systems (especially modal logic systems) that are related to each other by the addition of an axiom or two. I have only been able to find a few summaries of such interrelationships, and none of those online. What few cross references that I have seen give "facts" but no clue as to where they came from. If a reference is given, it only points to a book, and you have no idea where in the book the fact is given. I suspect that the main contribution that these pages can make is to provide a cross reference table that one can actually use to go look up the interesting facts that one may find here. There are important facts about systems that I have not yet had time to enter, and there are important facts about systems that I don't happen to know. If there is an important fact of a system that you think I should have listed, and I didn't, please send me that fact and a reference where I can look up the information.

Numbers
The ancient Egyptians were possibly the first civilisation to practice the scientific arts. Indeed, the word chemistry is derived from the word Alchemy which is the ancient name for Egypt. Where the Egyptians really excelled was in medicine and applied mathematics. But although there is a large body of papyrus literature describing their achievements in medicine, there is no records of how they reached their mathematical conclusions. Of course they must have had an advanced understanding of the subject because their exploits in engineering, astronomy and administration would not have been possible without it.
The Egyptians had a decimal system using seven different symbols.
1 is shown by a single stroke.
10 is shown by a drawing of a hobble for cattle.
100 is represented by a coil of rope.
1,000 is a drawing of a lotus plant.
10,000 is represented by a finger.

98. Projects - NFSNET
A client/server system for NFSNET by Henrik Olsen.
http://www.iaeste.dk/~henrik/projects/nfsnet.html
Number Field Sieve NET
More details about the current NFSNET project are available from the web site http://www.nfsnet.org/ These pages are about my client/server system for SNFS factoring, it was originally meant for Conrad Curry's NFSNET effort, to help with the assignment and distribution of ranges for sieving, but since the apparent death of that project and Conrad's disappearance I've switched it to handing out ranges from private projects such as , finished on my birthday: and more Used to factor numbers from Andy Steward's part of the Cyclotomic Number Project
the description below is old, the system isn't running at the moment
The current method for handing out ranges is to first check if there are any private projects for the account, and hand out a range for that if there is. If not, it selects the project with the largest expected memory use which is smaller than the one given in the request, and hands out the first range for this project.
The idea behind this is that the maximum memory requirement is configured on each client machine, so an account with multiple machines will get the "largest" assignments available for each machine.
The size of the range given out is decided by the time it took that machine to return the results the last couple of times, and currently aims at a range that takes one day to finish.
