SoftFloat
SoftFloat is a free, high-quality software implementation of the IEC/IEEE Standard for Binary Floating-point Arithmetic. (IEC is the International Electrotechnical Commission , an international standards body.) SoftFloat is completely faithful to the IEEE Standard, while at the same time being relatively fast. All functions dictated by the standard are supported except for conversions to and from decimal. SoftFloat fully implements the four most common floating-point formats: single precision (32 bits) , double precision (64 bits) , extended double precision (80 bits) , and quadruple precision (128 bits) . All required rounding modes, exception flags, and special values are supported. SoftFloat is distributed in the form of ISO/ANSI C source code and should be compilable with almost any ISO-compliant C compiler. Old-style compilers are not supported. Using the GNU C Compiler ( gcc ), the package has been compiled and tested for several platforms. Target-specific code is provided for 386 and SPARC processors. Other machines can be targeted using these two as examples. SoftFloat's code for the extended double-precision and quadruple-precision formats depends on the existence of a 64-bit integer type in C . If the C compiler used to compile SoftFloat does not support 64-bit integers, SoftFloat will be limited to single and double precisions only.

Research
I am a 4th year PhD student, interested in Algebraic Geometry, Algebraic Number Theory, Arithmetic Geometry and related topics. My advisor is Hendrik Lenstra . I graduated at the University of Utrecht in 2000 under the supervision of Frits Beukers and Ben Moonen . My thesis was about Perfect Cuboids
Catalogue of Surfaces
I intend to start a catalogue of algebraic surfaces , that are of interest to number theorists because of their rational points. The catalogue will include references, so that if "new" surfaces pop up, they can be compared with other surfaces, that have already been analysed. As for now, the catalogue doesn't contain many surfaces yet. Please e-mail me about any surfaces you've encountered and/or worked on, that might be of interest.

Welcome to my virtual home. I am currently assistant professor (but, I am happy to report, will be associate professor as of 1 July, 2004) in the at UC Irvine where I also maintain a web page (updated less frequently than this one). You may check out my curriculum vitae here For the time being, this site will be used exclusively to list my published and unpublished papers. In some cases, the published version differs substantially from the file posted here. I. Published Papers Notre Dame Journal of Formal Logic Discusses the question whether all nodes in a Kripke model of Heyting Arithmetic must be classical models of Peano Arithmetic. Proves, among other things, that this is always the case if the frame of the Kripke model is ordered like the natural numbers. Archive for Mathematical Logic Investigates certain fragments of Heyting Arithmetic, namely those obtained by restricting the induction schema to (a) Sigma_1 formulae, (b) Pi_1 formulae, and (c) prenex formulae. Proves, among other things, that the theories under (a) and (b) are not (as in the classical case) equivalent, that theory (a) is well-behaved, but theory (b) isn't, and that theory (c) is no stronger proof-theoretically than Heyting Arithmetic with the induction schema restricted to Pi_2 formulae.

http://www.numbertheory.org/cmat/krm_cmat.html
CMAT
CMAT is a matrix calculator program, written in C. Calculations can be performed on matrices with complex rational coefficients using exact arithmetic routines, as well as on matrices with elements mod p. There is also a DOS version which runs on 386/486+ machines. The DOS version, together with the C source, can be downloaded
People using the UNIX version have to create a .cmatrc file in the working directory, consisting of the two lines
datpath=.
cmat=.
(Also see cmat_bugfix.html for bug reports.) There are three calculator programs within CMAT: CMATR, CMATCR and CMATM.
CMATR works over the rationals, CMATCR works the field of complex rationals and CMATM works over the field of p elements, where p is any prime less than 2 The programs use multiple precision arithmetic routines based on those in [ Fla ][342-357,175-185]. (See documentation
Up to M0 (=30) objects of each type can be created and stored for use in future sessions.

Translated by Robin Waterfield
With a Foreword by Keith Critchlow
Attributed to Iamblichus (fourth century A.D.), The Theology of Arithmetic is about the mystical, mathematical and cosmological symbolism of the first ten numbers. It is the longest work on number symbolism to survive from the ancient world, and Robin Waterfield's careful translation contains helpful footnotes, an extensive glossary, bibliography, and foreword by Keith Critchlow. Never before translated from the ancient Greek, this important sourcework is indispensable for anyone interested in Pythagorean thought, Neoplatonism, or the symbolism of Numbers.

Logic and integer arithmetic
A look at the bytecodes of the Java virtual machine that perform logical and arithmetic operations
Summary
All Java programs are compiled into class files that contain bytecodes, the machine language of the Java virtual machine. This article takes a look at the bytecodes that implement the logical and integer arithmetic capabilities of Java. (4,000 words) By Bill Venners Printer-friendly version Mail this to a friend Page 1 of 3 Advertisement elcome to yet another installment of Under The Hood . This column aims to give Java developers a glimpse of the mysterious mechanisms clicking and whirring beneath their running Java programs. This month's article continues the discussion of the bytecode instruction set of the Java virtual machine (JVM). The article takes a look at integer arithmetic and logic in the JVM, and covers the bytecodes that perform logical and arithmetic operations on integers. Subsequent articles will discuss other members of the bytecode family. Integer arithmetic The Java virtual machine offers bytecodes that perform integer arithmetic operations on ints and longs. Values of type byte, short, and char are converted to int before they take part in arithmetic operations. For each bytecode that performs arithmetic on ints, there is a corresponding bytecode that performs the same operation on longs.

Floating-point arithmetic
A look at the floating-point support of the Java virtual machine
Summary
All Java programs are compiled into class files which contain bytecodes, the machine language of the Java virtual machine. This article takes a look at the bytecodes that implement the floating-point capabilities of Java. (2,500 words) By Bill Venners Printer-friendly version Mail this to a friend Page 1 of 2 Advertisement elcome to another installment of Under The Hood . This column aims to give Java developers a glimpse of the hidden beauty beneath their running Java programs. This month's column continues the discussion, begun last month , of the bytecode instruction set of the Java virtual machine (JVM). This article takes a look at floating-point arithmetic in the JVM, and covers the bytecodes that perform floating-point arithmetic operations. Subsequent articles will discuss other members of the bytecode family. The main floating points The JVM's floating-point support adheres to the IEEE-754 1985 floating-point standard. This standard defines the format of 32-bit and 64-bit floating-point numbers and defines the operations upon those numbers. In the JVM, floating-point arithmetic is performed on 32-bit floats and 64-bit doubles. For each bytecode that performs arithmetic on floats, there is a corresponding bytecode that performs the same operation on doubles.
