Our web site, Math, Programming, and Beyond is for people who want to learn and want to use their math and programming skills to achieve a goal. Visitors who enter the site are immediately a part of an expedition to gather an important metal from a planet. Their ship is sabotaged, the information manual is damaged, and astronauts must learn new skills in order to survive and save their fleet. Our web site is split into two sections: math and Visual Basic programming. If visitors are successful and acquire some of the skills in these sections, they can advance to the rest of the simulation. They have a choice between a short simulation and a long simulation. They can also choose to just view the pages and take some quizzes. Visit Site 2000 ThinkQuest USA Want to build a ThinkQuest site? Guardian Saturday September 29, 2001
In the aftermath of the unconscionable September 11 suicide attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Centre, an American newscaster said: "Good and evil rarely manifest themselves as clearly as they did last Tuesday. People who we don't know massacred people who we do. And they did so with contemptuous glee." Then he broke down and wept. Here's the rub: America is at war against people it doesn't know, because they don't appear much on TV. Before it has properly identified or even begun to comprehend the nature of its enemy, the US government has, in a rush of publicity and embarrassing rhetoric, cobbled together an "international coalition against terror", mobilised its army, its air force, its navy and its media, and committed them to battle.

92. Highlights In The History Of Algebra
An overview look at the progress and hindering factors in the development of algebra in Egypt, Babylonia, Greece, India, the Arabian Penninsula, and Europe.
http://www.ucs.louisiana.edu/~sxw8045/history.htm
The History of Algebra
Algebra may divided into "classical algebra" (equation solving or "find the unknown number" problems) and "abstract algebra", also called "modern algebra" (the study of groups, rings, and fields). Classical algebra has been developed over a period of 4000 years. Abstract algebra has only appeared in the last 200 years. The development of algebra is outlined in these notes under the following headings: Egyptian algebra, Babylonian algebra, Greek geometric algebra, Diophantine algebra, Hindu algebra, Arabic algebra, European algebra since 1500, and modern algebra. Since algebra grows out of arithmetic, recognition of new numbers - irrationals, zero, negative numbers, and complex numbers - is an important part of its history. The development of algebraic notation progressed through three stages: the rhetorical (or verbal) stage, the syncopated stage (in which abbreviated words were used), and the symbolic stage with which we are all familiar. The materials presented here are adapted from many sources including Burton, Kline's Mathematical Development From Ancient to Modern Times, Boyer's A History of Mathematics , and the essay on "The History of Algebra" by Baumgart in Historical Topics for the Mathematics Classroom - the 31st yearbook of the N.C.T.M.

Parallel Sparse Basic Linear Algebra Subroutines
Most computationally intensive applications work on irregular and sparse domains that complicate their implementation on parallel machines. The major goal of the Parallel Sparse Basic Linear Algebra Subroutines (PSBLAS) project is to provide a framework to enable easy, efficient and portable implementations of iterative solvers for linear systems, while shielding the user from most details of their parallelization. The interface is designed keeping in view a Single Program Multiple Data programming model on distributed memory machines.

Overview Perspectives
One of the main design and implementation goals was to provide a flexible framework and library that could easily sustain further developments.
  • Although we have designed the PSBLAS interface having in view an SPMD programming model on distributed memory machines, we do not exclude different implementations such as those based on a shared memory model of computations.
  • We are completing the integration of the PSBLAS library with supports for parallel applications that require dynamic mesh grid refinements.

Welcome to commalg.org!
commalg.org is a website devoted to the collection and dissemination of information relevant to the commutative algebra community. This information is collected in six areas:
  • Conference Announcements. This is where we post information about upcoming conferences that focus, at least partially, on commutative algebra. Use this form to submit a conference announcement. Imminent conferences can be found in the right sidebar. Preprint Announcements. This is where we provide links to preprints in commutative algebra. Unfortunately, commalg.org is not a preprint server, that is, we do not store preprints here. Thankfully, the arXiv preprint server ( what? ) has a section devoted to Commutative Algebra . We encourage you to post your own preprints to the arXiv server, even if you already post them to your personal webpage ( why? ). Use this form to submit information regarding new or previously unannounced preprints. News. This is an area for general information about the commalg community not included in the sections above. Examples of news include, but are not restricted to, announcements of awards being made to commutative algebraists, photos from conferences being posted, or (other things we haven't thought of yet). Use this form to submit news to be posted.
