2003 Montana PTA Convention Advocacy Report Madam President, The Montana PTA’s Legislative Platform states that we will recommend initiate and support legislation and appropriations for public schools that will insure all children and youth in Montana a high quality education. The Montana PTA will support legislation for the improvement of community programs and facilities, which provide maximum protection against moral, emotional and physical hazards for children and youth and strengthen home and family life. The Montana PTA believes all levels of government play varying roles in ensuring that the educational needs of all citizens are met. In order to ensure effective and efficient use of limited public resources the responsibilities of each level should be clearly defined. Controls of the public schools belong to the taxpayers through their nonpartisan state Board of Education and elected nonpartisan local Boards of Education and the Montana PTA shall oppose any legislation that would curtail the power and responsibility of local Boards of Education. No local, state or federal legislation policies or procedures would be passed that will erode the authority of local Boards of Education. The State roll in education should include the responsibility of providing a system of financing education to ensure adequate and equitable financing of public elementary and secondary schools and to ensure the continued strength and diversity of post-secondary institutions. In addition, the State should be formally committed to ensuring all persons within Montana an equal educational opportunity without regard to race, sex, national origin, handicapping condition, ethnic heritage, economic condition or geographic location.

The FFNs for elementary schools are staffed by school personnel, including teachers, who are stationed at activity centers that promote academic and cultural skills. There is a theme for every FFN. When the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar was the theme, an art project was to create egg carton caterpillars and tissue paper butterflies; the science station illustrated the life stages; and for a nutrition activity the families made banana, apple, and raisin caterpillars and celery, peanut butter, and pretzel butterflies. One of the centers is always designed to allow participants to make their own snacks for the night. The Student and Family Advocates work well together planning these special events. Remarkably, one FFN had 350 people in attendance, this in a town of about 3000. Janice attributes their success to getting the students involved. Once a family attends, they realize what fun it is and want to return the next month.
Parenting Groups
The Parent Center also offers classes and study groups for parents. The calendar for Parent Groups is set at the beginning of the year and the topics and scheduling are done based on parent surveys. The Parent Center works with 75 to 100 parents a year. Information about the groups is distributed by word of mouth, notes home with students, school newsletters and calendars, and advertising in the local newspaper. Teachers have also successfully referred parents for specific groups. One parent told Janice that her blood pressure had fallen since she started attending the Parent Groups.

We are a nationally-recognized clearinghouse for information and advice to keep evolution in the science classroom and "scientific creationism" out. While there are organizations that oppose "scientific creationism" as part of their general goals (such as good science education, or separation of church and state), NCSE is the only national organization that specializes in this issue. When teachers, parents, school boards, the press and others need information and help, they turn to NCSE.
While most of NCSE's work involves defending evolution against attacks, we also work to increase public understanding of evolution and science "as a way of knowing." We also have programs to help teachers who want to improve their teaching of evolution. Here you'll find information and resources for all these activities.

  • Introduction What is Adoption? Through The Eyes of a Child The Application and Assessment Process ... Finalizing the Adoption
  • Section 1: An Introduction On any given day, in the State of Montana, approximately 1500 children are in the state custody and guardianship because their primary caretakers are no longer able to care for them. On the average about 7% of those children will not be able to return home. These children need a committed family who will provide safety, acceptance, nurturing, structure, and love in a permanent family setting in order to grow into happy, productive adults. Many children are adopted by their foster parents. In fact about 70% of the current adoptions of children in the custody of the State of Montana are foster parents adopting the child living in their home. Recently a practice has developed of identifying a family who is willing to adopt a child at the time the child comes into foster care. There are other times when an adoptive home is needed for a child because the foster family is unable to make a permanent commitment. There is a continual need for new foster and adoptive homes throughout Montana. ....
