Executive Summary of the
FY 2001-2006 Strategic Plan
Statewide Conversation on the Arts
The foundation to build this plan began with four different six-member focus groups (grantees, artists, "underserved" individuals [in this case, non-grantees] and the general public). They were asked to identify the most critical issues the Arts Council should address in the 2001-2006 Strategic Plan. This research was conducted in half-hour phone interviews by ArtsMarket Consulting of Bozeman. Nineteen primary issues emerged in these conversations. These issues were then used in the Statewide Conversation on the Arts survey, asking Montanans to rank their importance on a scale of one (not important) to four (very important). Ten thousand surveys were distributed. A total of 760 responses were received. Of the nineteen issues that emerged from the focus groups, sixteen ranked above a score of three, indicating they were important for the Arts Council to address in its plan.
Responses in priority order are:
The three issues that ranked below "somewhat important": Establishing a brand identity for Montana Artists. Providing long-distance learning opportunities. Increasing the price of beef and wheat in Montana.

ACADEMICS IN THE NATURAL WORLD
Academics is the primary focus of WRFI courses. Our courses seek to understand the complex relationship between ecological processes and human actions. To varying degrees within each course, we study local ecology, policies that dictate land management, and ethics that determine our relationship to the land. We promote rigorous interdisciplinary learning through a diversity of readings, discussions and experiences. On our courses, you will have the opportunity to question local land managers, survey impacted ecosystems, and explore alternative philosophies for living on the land. We will encourage you to integrate your knowledge and experiences and to identity the connections between issues in ways that go beyond the boundaries of traditional education.

The Environmental Science major is an actively-growing addition to the Division of Natural Sciences at St. Norbert College. Our goal is to equip our graduates with the broad scientific foundation, environmental ethic, and problem-solving skills necessary to engage in ecological research or management of natural resources. We strive to provide each student with the flexibility to succeed in postgraduate education or positions with government agencies or industry. Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary major and is unique in requiring each student to conduct independent laboratory or field research leading to a final report (senior thesis). After successfully meeting this challenge, the graduating Environmental Science major is armed with evidence of his/her ability to solve a problem, obtain knowledge through the scientific method, and follow a project through to completion.
We attempt with our coursework to provide Environmental Science majors with as much hands-on, problem-solving experience as possible. In the pictures above, students are collecting water samples and electronic water quality data aboard the College's research vessel Chaoborus , a 27' Sea Sport used for student and facutly research as well as laboratory excercises for classes in Environmental Science, Environmental Chemistry, Biology, and Geology. Field-based learning continues even in the winter. In the photo to the right, students enrolled in Environmental Chemistry collect samples for a biochemical oxygen demand test by drilling a hole through the frozen Fox River near campus.

THE MONTANA AFFILIATE OF THE SUSAN G. KOMEN BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES 2004-2005 RESEARCH GRANT RECIPIENTS
The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the nation's largest private source of funding for breast cancer research and community outreach programs, has announced the awarding of its Montana 2004-2005 research grants. The Montana Affiliate of the Komen Foundation was pleased to award $79,537 in grants to five applicants. Each grant application was considered and scored by an independent grant review committee appointed by the Montana Affiliate Board of Directors. There were six qualifying grant requests all with their own individual merit, so the selection process was extremely difficult. The Komen Foundation has 117 Affiliate groups throughout the United States and Europe, which includes the Montana Affiliate. The Komen Foundation Affiliates are all supporting the Komen mission, which is to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment. In 2003, the Komen Foundation awarded grants totaling nearly $38 million.
