In education, accountability is often understood to be measurable proof that teachers, schools, districts, and states are teaching students efficiently and well, usually illustrated in the form of student success rates on various tests. Accountability may be measured in terms of goals, which often state that students are to master a common core of knowledge and skills and, by implication, that school personnel are responsible for making sure students do so. Schools are judged on their results, as well as on their use of funds, productivity, and implementation of programs. Critics argue that the practices and measures of some accountability programs are too simple and that they ignore complications caused by the social barriers that keep many schools from receiving adequate funding, especially poor and inner-city schools.
