Leafy Spurge
This module is intended to serve as a source of basic information needed to implement an integrated pest management program for leafy spurge. Any pest management plan or activity must be formulated within the framework of the management zones where it will be implemented. Full consideration must be given to threatened and endangered species, natural and cultural resources, human health and safety, and the legal mandates of the individual parks. Recommendations in this module must be evaluated and applied in relation to these broader considerations.
Introduction
Leafy spurge ( Euphorbia esula L.), a member of the family Euphorbiaceae, is a herbaceous, deep-rooted perennial weed of disturbed lands. Pastures and fields left fallow for long periods, tree rows, waste areas, roadsides, and rangelands or open grasslands are all susceptible to infestation by leafy spurge. Leafy spurge commonly occurs along railroad rights-of-way, water courses, and gullies. It is sometimes found in cultivated lands where infested land has been broken for crop production. Leafy spurge rarely invades fields that have been under cultivation for several years, but long-lived roots can regenerate at any time. The single greatest direct impact of leafy spurge is the reduction of populations of native grasses and legumes and associated ecosystem changes caused by the superior competitive abilities (rapid growth and allelopathic properties) of this species (Steenhagen and Zimdahl 1979).

Directory of Community Organizations by Shawna Hudson American Legion Ray Welch Post #13, St. Regis. Currently boasts 35 members. Post named after a Marine killed at Guadalcanal during WWII. Contact Post Commander Vince Triplett at 649- 2785 for information. American Legion Post # 131, Alberton meets the first Thursday of the month at 7:30 p.m. at the Alberton Community Center. January’s meeting will be changed to Jan. 8 due to New Year’s Day. This veteran’s Legion set another record for membership during the 2002-2003 year with an all-time high of 75 members. They sponsor the Alberton Little League team, and contribute to many worthwhile agencies in the county, including the Alberton Library and the Mineral Community Food Bank. The Women’s Auxiliary has come alive and doubled its membership. Contact Walter Hilberg 722-4570 and Harve Murray 722-3335 for the Legion, Deanna Smith 626-5766 for the Auxiliary. Cabin Fever Quilt Guild meets the first Tuesday of every month. Because members live throughout the county, from Alberton to Haugan, the meeting place alternates each month. The guild began in 2000 with 35 members and has grown to over 60 members. Every year the guild takes on a service project: 2000 Maynard Loge Trail, 2001 “Barb’s Heart and Home,” to buy defibrillator units for seven Mineral County patrol cars, and 2003 Helping Hands to benefit the HelpLine. Persons interested in joining can contact any of the guild officers: Kathleen Brown, president, 822-3861; Joyce Carpenter, vice president, 822-3457; or Patti Pickering, secretary/treasurer, 822-7425.
