City Changes Name to Half.com
Dateline: 01/24/00 Last week, the city council of a tiny city in Oregon approved a proclamation to name their city Half.com for the remainder of the year to become America's first ".com" city. However, the city of approximately 345 (2,000 in the surrounding region) has been, and will continue to officially be known as Halfway, Oregon. Last December, the city was approached to change its name by the marketing staff of the new Internet startup Half.com , which operates as a sort of online garage sale for people to sell each other used books, CDs, and movies, at reduced prices. In exchange for the temporary proclamation by the City Council, the company will provide the city with 20 computers for its elementary school, a

History
The town was established on October 30 , following the discovery of gold along Last Chance Creek by the " Four Georgians ". Helena's main street is named Last Chance Gulch and follows the winding path of the original creek through the historic downtown district. The town was originally named " Crabtown ", after John Crab, one of the "Four Georgians". As other miners arrived and the town expanded it was decided to change the name. After many suggestions, John Sommerville suggested the name of his home town, Saint Helena, Minnesota , but the pronunciation ( Hel-E-na ) did not suit the miners, who preferred HELL-en-a (emphasis on hell ). Dropping "Saint" from the name as unnecessary, the new name Helena was adopted (defeating the name " Tomah " by only two votes).

Geography on the Internet
Like the tangible world of geographical earth space, the digital world of cyber space is a wonderfully complex place. There are loads and loads of information resources out there that you'll find useful and interesting; the trick is finding it. Well, navigating the Internet is more art than science, but here are some useful guidelines:
  • When you have a reasonably specific idea what you are looking forexpressed in terms of one or more key words or phrasesthen a search engine such as Google is probably your best bet. Type in your term(s), and see what serendipitous goodies Google brings.
  • When your area of interest is broadly or poorly defined, then you might be better served by a hierarchical web guide such as Yahoo! . For example, select the Science category, then the Geography subcategory, then the Cartography sub-subcategory, and you've got a hot-linked listing of dozens of mapping-related sites and additional subcategories.

Welcome to the Virtual Gallery:
GIS Day is a grassroots event that formalizes the practice of geographic information systems (GIS) users and vendors of opening their doors to schools, businesses, and the general public to showcase real-world applications of this important technology. The National Geographic Society, Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI), and the Association of American Geographers (AAG) are promoting the second annual GIS Day on November 15, 2000. GIS Day will be a global event where users of GIS technology open their doors to schools, businesses, and the general public to showcase real-world applications of this exciting technology that uses geography.
In preparation for GIS Day 2000, The Montana Interagency GIS Technical Working Group has created this virtual gallery as a means to share our excitement and enthusiasm about the importance of geographic information in our day-to-day work. Throughout the year, this site serves as a showcase for what we consider to be exemplary applications of geographic information systems by professionals in Montana.
Since 1987 the National Geographic Society has organized Geography Awareness Week each November to promote geographic literacy in schools, communities, and organizations, with a focus on the education of children. In association with the National Geographic Society's effort to integrate geography and technology, these advocates think the world of your communities. GIS Day is introduced to help make people aware of the substantial contributions that GIS technology is making in their communities in the fields of science, information, and technology. GIS Day will become an integral part of the educational achievements that stem from Geography Awareness Week. "For the past twelve years, the National Geographic Society has invested heavily to get geography back into America's classrooms and to make sure that it is well-taught, well-learned, and well-applied," said Dale Petroskey, senior vice president of Mission Programs, National Geographic Society.
