    Geography
Life in Montana's mountainous western area differs greatly from that on its eastern plains. Across the eastern half of the state stretch broad sections of the Great Plains, drained by the Missouri River, which originates in SW Montana, and by its tributaries, the Milk, the Marias, the Sun, and especially the Yellowstone. Much of Montana's western boundary is marked by the crest of the lofty Bitterroot Range, part of the Rocky Mts., which dominate the western section of the state and along which runs the Continental Divide . Montana's very name is derived from the Spanish word meaning mountain country. Much of the fourth largest U.S. state is still sparsely populated country dominated by spectacular nature. High granite peaks, forests, lakes, and such wonders as those of Glacier National Park attract many visitors to Montana. Other places of interest include Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, Big Hole National Battlefield, and Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site (see

Montana America Reads Challenge: Geography
Montana is big, particularly to a newcomer. Carl Stevens, VISTA volunteer, describes how Montana's America Reads program has met the challenges posed by vast geography: "I had always heard of the Big Sky Country, and this year I discovered it's real. My first day in Montana, driving from Three Forks to Helena, I topped a rise and saw the road stretch out before me, bifurcating the autumn-amber wheat fields and grazing ranges that sweep up to the Big Belt Range on the east and the Elkhorns on the west. The road flows into a dark patch that turned out to be Townsend, 17 miles distant, in sight all the way. "Montana is the fourth-largest state in the United States. From corner to corner, say, Alzada to Yaak, Montana stretches well over 800 miles. Yet for all that space, there are fewer than 900,000 people. Montana has 56 counties and 492 elementary schools, about a third of which have fewer than 25 kids enrolled. Petroleum County has a total of 46 kids in its one elementary school. "That is our challenge in Montana: to provide tutor training statewide to our sparsely populated counties while making the most efficient use of our scarce resources. Since it was apparent from the very beginning that the outreach task was beyond the capabilities of any one group, the Montana America Reads Tutoring Partnership was formed, consisting of the Governor's Office of Community Service, Office of Public Instruction (OPI), The Montana Campus Compact, and the Corporation for National Service-Montana State Office.

MT Montana derives from the Latin word meaning "mountainous." Montana was admitted into the Union as the 41st state in 1889. The state is the fourth largest state of the United States. Western Montana is a land of tall, rugged mountains; while eastern Montana is a land of broad plains. Montana experienced sudden development when gold was discovered in 1862. Montana was also the scene of the Native Americans' last effort to keep their land. The last stand of Lieutenant Colonel George A. Custer was fought in Montana, as were the final battles of the Nez Perce Wars. The mountains, the battlefields, the old gold camps, and the vast, lonely distances give visitors a unique perspective of the American frontier. For what geographic areas does the Census Bureau produce estimates?
The Census Bureau produces population estimates for the Nation, the States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, counties and equivalents, incorporated places, minor civil divisions, consolidated cities, census regions and divisions, and metropolitan areas.
Census Regions and Divisions
Counties (and equivalents)
Minor Civil Divisions
Legally defined county subdivisions are referred to as minor civil divisions (MCDs.) MCDs are the primary divisions of a county. They comprise both governmentally functioning entities that is, those with elected officials who provide services and raise revenues and nonfunctioning entities that exist primarily for administrative purposes, such as election districts. Twenty-eight states and Puerto Rico have MCDs. However, the MCDs function as general purpose governmental units in all or part of only twenty states. Within these twenty states, PEP produces estimates for all governmentally functioning MCDs and for nonfunctioning MCDs in counties that contain at least one functioning MCD. The legal powers and functions of MCDs vary from state to state. Most of the MCDs in twelve states (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin) serve as general-purpose local governments. In the remaining eight states for which PEP produces MCD level estimates (Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, and South Dakota) the MCDs, for the most part, perform less of a governmental role and are less well known locally, even though they are active governmental units.
