HIGH SCHOOL HYDROGEN CONTEST Today’s high school students will be Montana’s hydrogen leaders. To promote student inquiry and hydrogen education, the UM-MCOT is sponsoring a statewide hydrogen program contest. All high schools in Montana are invited to participate in the contest by completing a community hydrogen resource inventory. All participating schools will receive hydrogen curriculum materials while the best five inventories will be awarded solar to hydrogen production demonstration units. Deadline for the contest entries is December 15, 2003. ALTERNATIVE ENERGY LEARNING CENTER The initial steps to establish an Alternative Energy Learning Center in Missoula are moving forward. A 10 KW wind turbine has been relocated from a Montana Tech research site near Norris. This EPSCOR piece of equipment was acquired in the 1990s along with a 50 KW turbine to be moved from Ennis to the Missoula area. When the approval process is complete, it is planned that the 10 KW turbine will be erected on the eastern edge of the University campus to capture the power from the much maligned Hellgate wind. Solar voltaics and a fuel cell have already been secured with plans to add an electrolyzer, hydrogen storage, micro-turbine, grid connections, and H2 fueling station in the future. This laboratory will provide a readily accessible facility for a variety of student uses.

I think a lot of Missoulians were taken aback by that rating. Perhaps we get used to focusing on our faults and shortcomings, rather than assessing the strengths that give us a good shot at success. What is it that works about Missoula? Here are my top five:
Perhaps you are saying, wait! None of this has anything to do with small business. This is just quality of life. What about taxes, what about permitting, what about the business environment?

THE MURAL-POETRY PROJECT Muldown School Whitefish High School '98 Laser School, Kalispell Whitefish High School '99 A story lies suspended, hidden within the picturesque beauty of our Valley. This unwritten narrative is the rainbow of ink flowing through the generations of our communities. It is the potential of uniting two viable and tremendously creative voices onto one page. An opportunity to re-connect wisdom and historical precedent to innocence and simplicity. A way to extend our heritage to all those that reside in, or are visiting our beautiful Valley. It is a work of art that is opaque, yet vibrantly alive within the stories and creativity of our youth and our senior citizens. Somewhere amongst the mad rush of progress, our communities seem to have suffered a loss of identity. Who we are the very nature of our humanity and sense of belonging TO something - has dissolved into separate, disconnected structures. The most awe-inspiring and aesthetic quality that exists in our surrounding landscape, is the captured simplicity and sinewy textures of wisdom that abound within the united story of our children and the elders of our communities. THE MURAL-POETRY PROJECT has opened a gateway to this enriching legacy. We have created a model project to present our society a view of the unique, interwoven thread that symbolizes the historic and artistic vein of our humanity. Re-presenting our communities in this capacity has connected our institutions, organizations, individuals and businesses with a community platform where ink, voice and color unite with the creative visions of all our generations , producing a work of art that completes the story we tell to the world.

Harvesting Clean Energy Conference III Special Edition
Montana moves to develop clean energy treasure
When people first began calling Montana the "Treasure State" in 1895, they were paying tribute to our mineral wealth-the gold, silver, and copper that helped to build our cities. But the nickname is just as apt when applied to our energy resources. Because as the nation's energy needs have evolved over the past two centuries, Montana has consistently been able to meet them with her abundance of natural riches. We've had timber to stoke our steamboats, coal to run our railroads, hydropower to light our homes, and oil and gas to warm them. Now, as the nation seeks new alternatives to conventional energy sources, Montana is once again poised to play a valuable role. Wind is the most promising of the existing energy alternatives. It's the world's fastest-growing source of energy. It's the most economically viable source of alternative energy. It's increasingly cost-competitive and, unlike coal or nuclear power, it can be sold as a value-added product. Most importantly, it's renewable and environmentally friendly. And, as any resident can tell you, wind is plentiful in parts of Montana. In fact, during the infamous Hard Winter of 1886 and '87, the wind was so strong, according to one wag, that the cattle had to tie their tails to their hind legs to keep them from blowing away. More recently-and using a more scientific approach-the American Wind Energy Association determined that Montana ranks fifth among the 50 states for its wind energy potential.

Flagship Program celebrates achievements of area youth By JANE RIDER of the Missoulian The Missoula Flagship Program will sponsor a public event Thursday to honor Missoula youths and their contributions to school and community this past school year. The celebratory event will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Caras Park in downtown Missoula. Students and their families from the 10 participating Missoula schools are encouraged to attend. Last year, more than 4,300 students participated in 764 different Flagship activities. During that same period, 1,355 volunteers donated more than 20,000 hours of their time as part of Flagship. "We will have brief speeches from students, and youth development coordinators from the 10 schools will congratulate students for their good work," said Rosie Buzzas, Flagship program director. Schools will have tables with pictures and scrapbooks showcasing student activities. High school bands from Hellgate and Sentinel will provide music at the beginning and end of the program. The celebration is an outgrowth of the Flagship-sponsored Teen Day, started by Big Sky High School students Amber Barfuss and Danielle Chard in 1999. Flagship decided this year to begin including all age groups, K-12, who give so much to the schools and community, Buzzas said.

Indian writers bring literature to life for students in Pablo By JOHN STROMNES of the Missoulian Right out of the gate, Henry Real Bird, a 55-year-old Indian poet and rancher from the Crow Reservation, closed his eyes tight, thrust his arms toward the sky and shouted out a long, long line from one of his "cowboy" poems to a group of wide-eyed, 11th-grade students. "I'm the feeling morning after yesterday just before the sun a little beyond nothing on this side of everything dreaming of a feeling on a dream ..." "It's beautiful to daydream," he then told the students. "You've got to have something to say. I'm not really in love with this world as it is, but this world is where I live." Right after lunch, right there in the lunchroom, Debra Magpie Earling, 46, the award-winning Salish novelist of "Perma Red," stood erect and stock still, only her lips moving, her voice a clear drone. She read a long, disturbing and violent passage from her second novel (still not published and as yet untitled) involving the stabbing and dismemberment of an Indian warrior woman. Two students came up to her afterward in tears, so affected were they by the power of the words.

SCHOOL BATTLE
September 2, 2003
John Merrow reports from Maine where some educators and legislators oppose the No Child Left Behind Act.
JOHN MERROW: Ever since the "No Child Left Behind" act went into effect, educators and legislators from Maine have been looking for a way out. PEGGY ROTUNDO: We know we have very good schools. We have high standards. We have national test scores to demonstrate that. When you have a great success record, why change things? If it's not broken, why change it? TOM HOOD: I think we could have done all of what "No Child Left Behind" is trying to do. Without the measures that the "No Child Left Behind" has in place. JOHN MERROW: Tom Hood is principal of Governor Longley Elementary School in Lewiston, Maine. TOM HOOD: Some of those things that they're asking in the "No Child Left Behind" leaves teachers, staff feeling really stressed and I don't think that's a good climate for learning for kids and for teachers. JOHN MERROW: If states want federal education money, they must adhere to the provisions of the "No Child Left Behind" Act. Among other things the new law calls for: Highly qualified teachers. All teachers must have state certification, a bachelor's degree, and training in the subject area. School choice: Local school districts must offer public school choice to students in low-income schools identified in need of improvement two years in a row. Testing: States must test all children in grades three through eight in reading and math. Some of the new laws' requirements do not sit well with educators in rural states. More than 50 percent of Maine students attend rural schools. That's second only to Vermont.

Jobs for MT Graduates
Fact Sheet What is it? Jobs for Montana's Graduates (JMG), created in April 1990, assists Montana high school students to stay in school, graduate and successfully transition from school to work. JMG partnered with the Montana National Guard in July 1999 to assist high school dropouts, enrolled in the Montana Youth ChalleNGe program, to gain their GED's and successfully transition to meaningful careers. JMG is affiliated with the Jobs for America's Graduates (JAG) program. JAG originated in Delaware in 1979 and has been successfully replicated in 27 states and territories in over 725 schools in 400 communities. JAG has a proven record of success: it is the nation's longest-running, most consistently applied school-to-work transition model. JMG's mission is two-fold: 1) to provide classroom instruction and work-based learning opportunities to students in grade nine through twelve and high school dropouts ages 16-18 which will enhance their career awareness, remediation, self-esteem and work readiness; 2) to identify young people who can benefit the most though participating in JMG and prepare them for meaningful career-oriented jobs, matching the students with community job opportunities and providing long-term follow-up to facilitate their successful transition from school to work.
