This site has been placed on the internet on May 25 of the year 2001 to group those that have an interest in one or more members of the Monitor family ("Varanus-spec.").
It will take some to get this site well filled. I (webmaster) depend on the information and data that you provide me with. So if you have interesting stuff concerning monitors let me know by sending it to me by email. Since this site concerns only Monitors, I'll only include information on this reptile family. Allthough you can mail me link suggestions concerning reptiles in general.
At this time in Europe we mainly depend on captive born monitors since most species are protected by law and imports for most monitor species are no longer allowed. In the near future we will be totally depending on the animals that we now have in our collections. For nature this is probably the best.
A dead monitor used to be easily replaced by a freshly imported animal. This is fortunately no longer the case!!! (in Europe) Therefore it is most important that we share our knowledge on keeping and breeding monitors in order to be able to have the possibility to take care of these beautifull reptiles in the future. The above is by the way the case for many exotic animal species.

Monitor Marathons
How one group of lizards turns a gasp into a gulp. Story by Adam Summers ~ Illustrations by Patricia J. Wynne
Making my way down a trail through rosemary scrub in Florida's central sandhills, I surprised a six-lined racerunner ( Cnemidophorus sexlineatus , so named for the lines that run the length of its body) basking in a wheel rut. I gave chase and the lizard streaked off-easily keeping ahead of my stumbling run. For thirty yards the lizard churned through loose sand, before managing a darting escape under a shady bush. The sprint was impressive, particularly for a lizard less than a foot long, but what was even more amazing was that the lizard had to make its dash without taking a breath. The racerunner's mechanical systems for breathing and running are linked in such a way that the lizard can do one or the other, but not both. David Carrier, a biomechanist at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, observed that a lizard's rib muscles also play a vital role in locomotion: they stabilize the trunk, giving the forelimbs a steady platform from which to operate. But any locomotion also renders the rib muscles nearly useless for breathing; running makes them completely so. Studying the common green iguana (

CBS Giant Lizards Loose In Florida
  • Nile Monitor Lizards Are Normally Native To Africa
  • Jul 19, 2003 8:53 pm US/Mountain CAPE CORAL, Fla. (AP) Biologists in southwest Florida have set out to trap a species of giant, carnivorous lizards normally native to Africa that appear to be spreading through the region. Cape Coral has become a haven for Nile monitor lizards, and their population in the Gulf Coast city has possibly reached the thousands, said Todd Campbell, a University of Tampa assistant professor of biology who has started a project to monitor the monitors. Options being studied include relocating or killing the animals. The first official report of a monitor lizard in Cape Coral was in 1990. Since then, Cape Coral has received 145 reports. Nile monitor lizards, which can easily grow to 5 feet, might have become established in Cape Coral in one of two ways, Campbell said. Some may have been released into the wild after being kept as pets, or the roaming lizards might all be descendants of a single pregnant female who was released. Campbell and his assistants, working with state and federal grants, are trying to learn whether monitor lizards have become a threat to native species. The animals can hunt prey in the water, in trees and even underground.

Research by UMass Biologist Suggests that Monitor Lizards Offer "Evolutionary Freeze-Frame"
Results reported in Science AMHERST, Mass. Research by Elizabeth Brainerd, of the biology department at the University of Massachusetts, addresses a long-standing disagreement among scientists regarding how lizards breathe. The study, conducted along with colleagues at Harvard University and the University of California, is detailed in the current issue of the prestigious journal, Science. The work was funded by the University of Massachusetts, the National Science Foundation, and a Chapman Fellowship. Brainerd's specialty is biomechanics with an emphasis on evolution. Her work focuses on breathing in lizards. This particular study focused on breathing in green iguanas and monitor lizards. Researchers took X-ray videos of the lizards while the animals walked on treadmills.  For years, researchers have disagreed about whether lizards can run and breathe at the same time. The iguana uses chest muscles for both running and breathing, and so is unable to run and breathe simultaneously. This results, Brainerd says, in "a skittering-type locomotion." Many other kinds of lizards are believed to face the same constraint.

Wildlife of Pakistan Liz ards Monitor Lizard (Varanus) PHOTO CREDIT: Sind Wildlife Department Local name: Goa (Urdu) Description and Biology: Monitor, or goannas, common name for a genus of lizards that includes the largest living lizard, the Komodo dragon. There are about 30 species in the genus, ranging from 20 cm to more than 3 m (8 in to 10 ft) long. They are characterized by a long, forked, snakelike tongue, and are able to engulf and swallow large prey whole. They are sleek, fast runners with tapered heads, long necks, strong legs, and long, powerful tails. Monitors feed on insects, birds, reptiles and their eggs, small mammals, and carrion. Monitors are among the oldest living lizards. They are related to the mosasaur, a marine lizard that lived from136 million to 65 million years ago and ranged up to 10 m (33 ft) long. The largest monitor is the 135-kg (300-lb) Komodo dragon. It lives on several islands, including Komodo, in Indonesia. This lizard is a fierce predator and scavenger; its mouth carries a virulent bacteria, and its bite alone can be fatal. Although monitors are mainly terrestrial, some species also climb trees and are good swimmers. The large water monitor of East India can swim far from land. Habitat and Distribution: Three subspecies of Monitor lizards are found in Pakistan. The monitor lizard is an inhabitant of agricultural as well as desert Ecozones in Pakistan. Monitors are quiet common in the province of Sind and Baluchistan. the best place to see them is in Cholistan desert and Thar desert where the desert species of Monitor is found.

In retrospect, it might have been better to structure this area of phylospace on crown taxa: Anguimorpha = Anguis Xenosaurus + Varanus and Varanoidea = Heloderma Varanus . Then we could discuss Platynota = , even if it isn't clear that anything lived in that region that wasn't already accounted for as a Varanoid, except perhaps Parviraptor . As matters currently stand, I have used Varanoidea = Varanus Anguis Iguania Scincomorpha Gekkota Anguimorpha ... Necrosauridae (only Necrosaurus and Parviderma Proplatynotia Saniwides Paravaranus Telmasaurus Lanthanotidae Varanidae Varanus If this is correct, which it likely is, the neat division of Anguimorpha into Varanoidea and Anguoidea falls apart Anguoidea is paraphyletic and includes Varanoidea. In addition, there is an ugly mess of unaffiliated species between the slimmed-down Necrosauridae and the varanids. For the moment, things will be left as they are; although a major overhaul seems inevitable.

Juvenile Water Monitor Lizard - Varanus salvator
Photograph by Scott Tuason The genus name for monitor lizards, Varanus , is a Latin word derived from "Waran", an Arabic word for monitor. The "monitor" name probably originated from the superstitious belief that Nile monitors warned of the presence of crocodiles. Nile monitors eat crocodile eggs and were therefore often seen near crocodile nesting sites. There are "40 or so" species of monitors (number varies with different references.) Approximately two-thirds of the monitor species are from Australia, while the one-third are found in Africa, the Middle East, tropical Asia, and some Pacific Islands. Most monitor species grow to lengths of 3 feet or more, making them the largest of all living lizards. Monitors range in size from the smaller tree monitors (1.5 feet) to the Komodo dragon, an endangered species native to Indonesia, which may reach lengths of 10 feet.

This is so important to their digestion and mental well being so please be sure to supply them all their needs. Don't forget access to plenty of sunlight. My Bambi flattens out like a pancake when the sun rays hit her cage. Soooo cute. She loves the sun. Now at 2 feet long this is easy. A full size room with a floor that can be disinfected and a pool that she can swim in will be a lot harder to achieve this. Do it or do not get the pet.
Substrate: Fresh clean dirt is great. Its cheap to replace. My little "Bambi" likes to dig and has a habit of pooping in her water so cleaning is easy for now but will be tough when she is a 7 foot adult. I sometimes change her water twice a day now. This will be a major problem when she full-grown. I still use the dry deck I speak of in my general section. Her new enclosure will be a 12x12-room custom built and I would like to be able to supply her with the dirt she'll need for her natural burrowing needs. I'll deal with that as she gets bigger. Behavior: Temperature: : Hot, humid, tropical. 79 on one side and up to 90 in the basking spot.
