Names from the Secret History of the Mongols Compiled by Heather Davenport, This index is a list of names from The Secret History of the Mongols, the origin of Chinghis Khan adapted by Paul Kahn, North Point Press, San Francisco 1984, ISBN 0-86547-138-X. Please do not reprint, repost or distribute this index without permission. Please feel free to cite it as a secondary source for your research. The Secret History of the Mongols was written for the royal Mongol family after Chinghis Khan's death in 1227 AD, and details the history of the Mongol peoples from the birth of the first Mongol, Batachikhan, through the ascension of Ogodei Khan to the Mongolian throne. The Secret History is considered a primary source for the genealogy of the ruling families of Mongolia for this time period. These names are in alphabetical order, and are followed by gender (m/f) and page number for documentation purposes. Where possible, translation of the names, clan / tribal affiliation and other notes of interest from the text are included. Tribal spellings are taken directly from the text and may not be consistent throughout this list. For additional information on period Mongolian naming practices, please see this article . The Missing Link in Global Islam
THE MONGOL EMPIRE AND ITS LEGACY (Islamic History and Civilization. Studies and Texts) by Reuven Amitai-Preiss ($146.00, hardcover, Brill Academic Publishers; ISBN: 9004110488) Now with the paperback edition this work will be especially useful as a textbook and for individual purchase. The Mongol empire was founded early in the thirteenth century by Chinggis Khan and within the span of two generations embraced most of Asia, becoming the largest land based state in history. The united empire lasted only until around 1260 but the major successor states continued on in the Middle East, present day Russia, Central Asia and China for generations, leaving a lasting impact much of which was far from negative on these areas and their peoples. The papers in this volume present new perspectives on the establishment of the Mongol empire, Mongol rule in the eastern Islamic world, Central Asia and China, and the legacy of this rule. The various authors approach these subjects from the view of political, military, social, cultural and intellectual history. Most of the essays offer original research and visit major controversies in Mongol studies. The book is a must-read for the specialist and worth a close look by generalists. Recommended.

However, three episodes in the Secret History of the Mongols can be matched with comparable episodes in western literature. The significance of this kind of cultural comparison is uncertain; perhaps here I am merely using my anecdotes as a convenient literary hook on which to hang my reflections on the relationship between the peoples of the steppe and those of Western Europe. I call these three stories "The Rainstone", "The Proud Princesses", and "The Jealous Bloodbrother". THE RAINSTONE A. "The same Buyiruq-Qan and Quduqa, who knew how to use the magic stone, used the magic stone and created a storm. But the storm turned and came down on top of themselves".

The New Penguin Atlas of Medieval History > Customer Review #1: Nice for students of Medieval Europe

Good book with simple maps, black, white and green and not poor texts. Detailed. But unfortunately, mostly focuses on European history. I d call it Atlas of Medieval Europe.
The New Penguin Atlas of Medieval History > Customer Review #2: Poor map quality and duller history! This book uses ONE single map on every page to document the movement of various people over time. However, it does not designate major landmarks. It tells of tribes crossing the Danube and the Volga but these rivers are never labeled. It refers to the Tigris and Euphrates but you need another map to tell you where they are. When major landmarks are not identified it is hard to understand how this can be called an Atlas. The history is disjointed and poorly written. The only reason to buy this book is that you dont have a match with which to burn your money. The New Penguin Atlas of Medieval History >

He founds the Merovingian dynasty and passes his kingdom on to his sons, who begin fighting one another for additional territory. 590 CE : Medieval Europe - Pope Gregory, originally a Benedictine, creates a religious policy for western Europe by fusing the Roman papacy with Benedictine monasticism. He creates the Latin church, which serves to counteract the subordination of the Roman popes to Eastern emperors. As the fourth great "church father," St. Gregory the Great draws his theology from Ambrose of Milan, Jerome and AUGUSTINE OF HIPPO His concepts of purgatory and penance widen the gulf between the Eastern and Western Churches. The fifth volume of The New Cambridge Medieval History brings together studies of the political, religious, social and economic history of the whole of Europe and of the Mediterranean world between about 1198 and 1300. Comprehensive coverage of the developments in western Europe is balanced by attention to the east of Europe, including the Byzantine world, and the Islamic lands in Spain, north Africa and the Levant. Thematic articles look at the fine arts, the vernacular, communications and other aspects of a period in which the frontiers of Latin Christendom were expanding vigorously outwards; and attention is paid to the frontier societies that emerged in Spain, the Baltic and the Mediterranean islands.
