Battles are indicated by BOLDFACE type. All dates given are CE or BCE (Common Era or Before Common Era). Every effort has been made to assure the correctness of these dates, and to harmonize them with the current Gregorian calendar. If an event is listed under two dates, the LATER of the two is -probably- the correct Gregorian. Where any date in an Almanac-style source, or an encyclopaedia, has conflicted with a date given by a reputable historian, the historian has been taken as the authoritative source. Sometimes even the historians disagree, so I had to use my best judgement on the matter. Therefore there are no guarantees as to the exact correctness of all of the dates. If you have a better source, or a more accurate date, please let me know, but be so kind as to tell me * why * it is better or more accurate.

It is arranged thematically following the general plan of the Internet Medieval Sourcebook . "Medieval" has been taken very widely - from the first-century (CE) Roman Empire until the 17th-century. Although "medieval" and "movies" might not seem to be a good fit and a lot of bad films have been made it is perhaps worth noting that they have gone together since the earliest surviving American feature film - André Calmettes and James Keane Richard III of 1912.

    History: Fiction or Science?
Learn how and why Ancient Rome, Greece and Egypt were crafted during Renaissance. What if the Old Testament was a rendition of events of Middle Ages written after the New Testament? Did the crusaders really wait for 1000 years to punish the tormentors of the Messiah? What if Jesus Christ was born in 1053 and crucified in 1086 AD?
Sounds unbelievable? Not after you've read "History: Fiction or Science?" by Anatoly Fomenko, leading mathematician of our time. He follows in steps of Sir Isaac Newton and finds clear evidence of falsification of History. Armed with logic, astronomy and computers he proves the history of humankind to be both dramatically different and drastically shorter than generally presumed.

They were supported by squires, who fought only in an emergency, and professional calvary sergeants who were not members of the aristocracy. A code of behavior grew up, embodying all the characteristics of the ideal knight. He should be bold and brave, yet gentle, considerate, wise, and courteous. He should be a ruthless killer, but also fond of music, poetry and polite society. He should be inspired by the love of a beautiful woman, whom he worshiped from afar. He should be a good Christian, and follow the teachings of the Church. His manners should be perfect, his speech smooth and entertaining, his appearance manly, strong, energetic and elegant. Understandably, this ideal did not really exist. But he is a familiar figure in many medieval songs and stories, and tells us a lot about the qualities that people valued at the time. Chivalry, as this code of behavior is called, applied to the upper class only. Ordinary, rough soldiers were simply expected to shoot straight and obey orders.

The Secret History of the Mongols
"The Secret History of the Mongols" is the first literary monument concerning the Mongols. It is believed to have been written in the year 1240 A.D. The author of it still remains unknown. This is the only immediate source of information about medieval mongolian life and self-consideration and also it is the invaluable treasure for historians, linguists, ethnographs and ethnologist engaged in the field of oriental studies. The copy of The Secret History which has survived to our days were transcribed with Chinese characters from some original manuscript in one of the mongolian scripts. Some scholars believe it to be the Uighur script, others proposed h`Pags-pa script (Quadratschrift) only few think that it was originally recorded by Chinese characters. This copy was written about 14th century and contained Mongolian text (in Chinese fonetic transcription ) and the Chinese translation First man from Europe who discovered this manuscript was Russian archimandrite Palladij. He was a member of the Russian Orthodox Mission in China. He was an outstanding sinologist not mention his missionarial abilities. In 1866 he translated Chinese part of The Secret History into Russian with a considerable contractions. The name of this work in russian translation was "Ñòàðèííîå ìîíãîëüñêîå ñêàçàíèå î ×èíãèñ-õàíå" ("An old mongolian tale about Genghis Khan"). After that, the full text of the "Secret History" was published by S.A.Kozin in Leningrad (1941), E.Haenisch in Berlin (1948), P.Pelliot in Paris (1949). Very important works were the dictionary of the language of the Secret History of the Mongols (Haenisch E. 1962) and the index to the manuscript compiled by Igor de Rachewiltz (1972).

The Course This course is an introduction to the history and civilization of Europe and the Mediterranean area in the middle ages. The emphasis is on the dissolution of the classical Greco-Roman world into three kindred civilizations, Byzantium, Islam, and Latin Christendom; the formation of a new civilization in the West; and the beginning of the eventual rise to world predominance of the West.
Reading and Texts Students are required to do a certain amount of assigned reading outside class. The reading for this course comes in two forms - articles on reserve and documents available on the World Wide Web. By the end of the course students should be able to evaluate for themselves both source material from the past and the varied interpretations given to the to those sources. There is a required textbook, but students' primary responsibility is to read and discuss primary source assignments. The textbook (with a new edition for this semester - do not buy older editions) is - Hollister, C. Warren
