BACK History Ancient History Christianity started to spread in Georgia from the 1st century, and became established as a state religion of Kartli in the 330s and about the same time in West Georgia as well. It meant an orientation toward Rome and Byzantium that would prove a decisive factor in the evolution of the national consciousness and culture. By the mid 400s, 30 bishops were in Kartli. The leader of an anti-Iranian struggle, King of Kartli Vakhtang Gorgasali further strengthened the Kartlian church by making it autocephalic, having secured permission from Constantinopole to elevate the status of the bishop of Mtskheta to that of Catholicos. Christianity destroyed the old Georgian literature and began to create a literature of its own, mostly translations. Georgian writing was first seen in the 5th century. The first examples include inscriptions in the Georgian monastery of the Holy Cross in Palestine, in the Bethlehem desert (Bir-ell-Katt), as well as those in the Sioni Church of Bolnisi, south of Tbilisi. The source of the Georgian script is a controversial problem. Some scholars believe that it appeared long before the Christian epoch, while others relate its appearance to the establishment of the Christian religion. They do not deny the possible existence of a certain original writing in the pre-Christian era. The oldest books translated then were the Gospels and the Old Testament. The Passion of St. Shushanik was written in the 5th century. Another such work by an anonymous author, The Martyrdom of Evstate Mtskheteli is from the 6th century.

China
is the world's oldest continuous major civilization , with written records dating back about 3,500 years and with 5,000 years being commonly used by Chinese as the age of their civilization. Successive dynasties developed systems of bureaucratic control, which gave the agrarian-based Chinese an advantage over neighboring nomadic and mountain dwelling cultures. The development of a state ideology based on Confucianism 100 BC ) and a common system of writing ( 200 BC ) both strengthened Chinese civilization. Politically, China alternated between periods of political union and disunion, and was often conquered by external ethnicities, of which many were eventually assimilated into the Chinese identity. These cultural and political influences from many parts of Asia as well as successive waves of immigration and emigration merged to create the familiar image of Chinese culture and people today. PRESS RELEASE Barbarians are violent forces from the dark beyond, savage tribes who hurl themselves repeatedly against the bastions of civilization. In a two-part, four-hour World Premiere Special, The History Channel vividly tells their story, aided by cinematic on-location re-creations and experts who help place their astonishing sagas into historical perspective. BARBARIANS makes its debut on The History Channel on Monday and Tuesday, January 19 and 20 at 9-11 pm ET/PT each night. The two hours on VIKINGS and GOTHS air on January 19, and the two hours on MONGOLS and HUNS air on January 20.
To the embattled and civilized Romans, Persians, and Chinese, the cruelty of the Barbarians rivaled that of wild animals. It was said they ate human flesh, worshiped pagan deities, and fought like the very demons of hell. How could these nomadic clans successfully devastate the most advanced cultures of the ancient world? History now reveals how these Barbarian peoples had strengths that often gave them the upper hand against far superior and more technologically advanced forces. In fact, the Barbarians were innovative in their development of weapons and strategies, clever in their use of diplomacy and deceit, and completely ruthless in their use of terror as a weapon. The story of the Barbarian invasions is truly one of the clash of civilizations.

Archaeological excavations show evidence of the first settlements on the territory of Kiev 15,000 to 20,000 years ago. Legend has it that at the end of the 5th and the beginning of the 6th centuries, three brothers, Kiy, Shchek, and Khoriv, and their sister, Lybid, founded a town and named it after their elder brother Kiy, as "Kyiv".
The evolution of Kiev into a city is indivisible from the development of the old Kievan-Rus feudal state. Legends and historical documents describe courageous Kievites defending their city over the ages against the Khazars and Pechenegs, Polovtsi, Tartars, and Mongols, Lithuanian and Polish feudal lords, the Duchy of Muscovy, and the Russian Empire. The early settlers of Kiev built their first citadel on the steep right bank of the Dnipro River to protect themselves from marauding nomadic tribes.
Later, Kiev's Grand Princes built their palaces and churches on Starokievska Hill, while artisans and merchants built their houses next to the wharf on the Dnieper. By the end of the 9th century, when the Kievan-Rus princes united scattered Slavic tribes, Kiev was the political center of the Eastern Slavs. Kiev maintained wide for links due to its position in the middle of trade routes between the Vikings and the Greeks.

Evidence of inhabitants in Korea from as early as 4000 BC exists in Korea. Legend has that the man-god Tan Gun founded the Joseon (meaning Land of the Morning Calm Kingdom in 2333 BC. Almost no centralized communities existed from then until three kingdoms emerged in the 1st century BC.
57 B.C. - 668 A.D.: The Three Kingdoms of Silla Goguryeo , and Baekje had similar ethnic and linguistic backgrounds. Koguryo occupied the northern part of the peninsula from the Chinese border to the Han River, while Silla and Baekche dominated the southern regions. All three kingdoms were heavily influenced by China, and Buddhism was introduced to Koguryo in 372. Various alliances were formed either with or against the Chinese until 660 when Silla allied with China to overthrow Baekje. Goguryeo fell shortly afterwards in 668.
The Silla Kingdom period marked the start of Korea's cultural development. Buddhism expanded and furled the construction of numerous temples and art works. However, despite Chinese influences, Silla remained largely tribal in culture. Society divided into distinct classes with a large semi-slave population supporting an aristocratic minority. Warlords began amassing power bases to the north and eventually took over Silla and founded a new kingdom-

The Secret History of the Mongols
"The Secret History of the Mongols" is the first literary monument concerning the Mongols. It is believed to have been written in the year 1240 A.D. The author of it still remains unknown. This is the only immediate source of information about medieval mongolian life and self-consideration and also it is the invaluable treasure for historians, linguists, ethnographs and ethnologist engaged in the field of oriental studies. The copy of The Secret History which has survived to our days were transcribed with Chinese characters from some original manuscript in one of the mongolian scripts. Some scholars believe it to be the Uighur script, others proposed h`Pags-pa script (Quadratschrift) only few think that it was originally recorded by Chinese characters. This copy was written about 14th century and contained Mongolian text (in Chinese fonetic transcription ) and the Chinese translation First man from Europe who discovered this manuscript was Russian archimandrite Palladij. He was a member of the Russian Orthodox Mission in China. He was an outstanding sinologist not mention his missionarial abilities. In 1866 he translated Chinese part of The Secret History into Russian with a considerable contractions. The name of this work in russian translation was "Ñòàðèííîå ìîíãîëüñêîå ñêàçàíèå î ×èíãèñ-õàíå" ("An old mongolian tale about Genghis Khan"). After that, the full text of the "Secret History" was published by S.A.Kozin in Leningrad (1941), E.Haenisch in Berlin (1948), P.Pelliot in Paris (1949). Very important works were the dictionary of the language of the Secret History of the Mongols (Haenisch E. 1962) and the index to the manuscript compiled by Igor de Rachewiltz (1972).

Mongols in China (Marco Polo) Introduction From the first explosion of Mongol military might from the steppes of central Asia in the early decades of the 13th century to the death of Timur in 1405, the nomads of central Asia made a last, stunning return to center stage in world history. Mongol invasions ended or interrupted many of the great empires of the postclassical period, while also extending the world network that had increasingly defined the period. Under Chinggis Khan - who united his own Mongol tribesmen and numerous nomadic neighbors into the mightiest war machine the world had seen to that time - central Asia, northern China, and eastern Persia were brought under Mongol rule. Under Chinggis Khan's sons and

Last updated: June 2, 2004 Home China Discovery : General Info: History Yuan Dynasty
The Mongol conquest of China came in a series of stages. The Western Xia kingdom in the north-west was attacked between 1205 and 1209 and the Jin Empire of North China was first overrun between 1211 and 1215. The Mongols then turned westwards and seized the Western Liao Empire, the state founded by the remnants of the Qidan. After a pause the Mongol attack was resumed, the Jin Empire was destroyed in 1234, the remains of the Nanzhao kingdom in the south-west fell in 1253. Korea was conquered by 1258. The Yuan dynasty was established in 1272 and the Southern Song capitulated in 1279.
Genghis Khan and the conquest of North China
In the twelfth century the people who are known historically as the Mongols lived in separate tribes on the steppes of central Asia. Their economy was based on herding cattle, hunting and the fact that they were expert horsemen. They were frequently in conflict with their neighbors, the Tartars and this was encouraged by the Jin, who wished to ensure that there was dissension on the steppes as a means of keeping themselves free of oppression.

    Ming Dynasty
Last updated: June 2, 2004 Home China Discovery : General Info: History
Mongol rule in China was brought to an end after civil war among Mongol princes and an increasing conversion to the sedentary Chinese way of life that robbed the Mongol military machine of much of its effectiveness. Repeated natural disasters were followed by a massive peasant rebellion that the alien rulers could not quell. The Mandate of Heaven now shifted to Zhu Yuanzhang, a peasant leader who became eminent during the rebellions. After eliminating his rivals, Zhu Yuanzhang established the Ming Dynasty in 1368, with his capital city first in Nanjing and later in Beijing. Zhu Yuanzhang was historically known as Emperor Taizu.
The Ming Dynasty was the last native Chinese dynasty to rule the empire. Spanning almost three centuries between the fall of the Mongol Yuan Dynasty (1271 - 1368) and the rise of the Manchu Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1911), the Ming reunited what is now called China proper after almost 400 years of foreign incursion and occupation.

After 210 B.C. the Uyghurs played important roles in Hun (220 B.C.-386 A.D.),Tabgach (386-534 A.D.) and Kok Turk (552-744 A.D.) Turkic empires, which were established in Central Asia
After the fall of the Kok Turk Empire in Central Asia, the Uyghurs established their first state in Mongolia in 744, with the city Karabalgasun, on the banks of the Orkhun River, as its capital.

Ancient Times Through the 17th Century

Written and Edited by Cliff Lethbridge The Roots Of Rocketry Historians believe that armies began hurling combustible weapons toward one another as early as 1,000 B.C. At the time, fire pots were used to set fires. Fire pots were simply pots containing flammable materials like naphtha that were ignited and hurled by various mechanical devices. The concept was simple, yet effective as fire pots were able to be easily deployed and could set fires over fairly large areas. Still, these were not rockets in the traditional sense. The Reaction Principle Is First Demonstrated Although the exact date remains a mystery, it is believed that the reaction principle was first demonstrated about 360 B.C. by a Greek named Archytas. Far from demonstrating the reaction principle in a weapon, Archytas simply filled a hollow clay pigeon with water. He then suspended the clay pigeon by string over a fire. The heating of the water produced steam, and the clay pigeon could move under its own power as steam escaped through strategically placed holes. Archytas could hardly have imagined that the same basic principle would one day carry men to the Moon.
