Personal account of travel. Photographs. Links.

After that we flew to Irkutsk, the heart of Siberia, we were so excited to actually be going to Russia!! We toured all through the city and to Lake Baikal, which supplies 25% of Russia's fresh water, and is a sacred place, in a way, for Russians to go. It is really beautiful there, the food was good and we even got an Intourist salt shaker as a souvenir!! Now there is officially no Intourist but they still organize stuff. We saw certainly the most interesting bathrooms in Russia, my Estonian friend said Americans are fixated with the bathrooms and I never thought of it but I guess we are!! We saw pits in the floor, we saw the dirtiest facilities, for many days we didn't have any hot water, but it makes you appreciate home and after all when you need to go there you work around it no matter how it looks or smells!!
We were to get the Trans-Siberian train in Irkutsk, and it turns out you can't get a reserved compartment until the day of departure no matter how much you paid for it in advance in the US!! But our wonderful guide Natasha was incredible, she got us a "Soft" class car by ourselves, that's like first class, because otherwise you can be in a car with 2 strangers, maybe 2 guys and we didn't like that idea!!! So we were very tired by the time we got on the train at 11 pm and we had to get our bedding and I learned a few Russian words for the train lady like "please lock the door" and "tea" and "toilet" and basic things!! So we slept very well for 2 nights on the train, the scenery is incredible, Siberia is very green and it was very hot, 25-30C which we didn't expect!! I guess they had record heat the whole time we were gone, in Finland we were almost at the Arctic Circle and it was 34C, they couldn't believe it and we really couldn't!!

These remote mountains and valleys are rich in surface archaeology: burial mounds from the late Bronze and Iron Ages, great stone altars (khereksur) from the Bronze and early Iron Ages, and ritual sites and stone images from the Turkic period. This region also includes some of the finest and largest petroglyphic complexes in North Asia. In addition, project members have recorded extensive petroglyphs and Turkic ritual sites; deer stones; Turkic images and ritual altars and khereksur, and a great number of other scattered Turkic images, standing stones, and deer stones.
Through this process of recording and documenting, the Project is gradually building a vivid picture o f the ecology of culture in the Mongolian Altay between the late Pleistocene (approximately 11,000 calendar year B.P.) and the Turkic period (first millennium C.E.).

History Online - Mongols
History: Fiction or Science?
Learn how and why Ancient Rome, Greece and Egypt were crafted during Renaissance. What if the Old Testament was a rendition of events of Middle Ages written after the New Testament? Did the crusaders really wait for 1000 years to punish the tormentors of the Messiah? What if Jesus Christ was born in 1053 and crucified in 1086 AD?
Sounds unbelievable? Not after you've read "History: Fiction or Science?" by Anatoly Fomenko, leading mathematician of our time. He follows in steps of Sir Isaac Newton and finds clear evidence of falsification of History. Armed with logic, astronomy and computers he proves the history of humankind to be both dramatically different and drastically shorter than generally presumed.
Archaeological, dendrochronological, paleographical and carbon methods of dating of ancient sources and artifacts are both

Election Day in Mongolia
Chris Welsch, Star Tribune August 4, 1996 BOM, MONGOLIA The riders first appeared in the distance simply as movement small, dark specks crossing the valley floor as steadily as satellites cross the night sky. The plain they rode across was wide and open; ragged, pale blue mountains rose behind them. The closer they came, the more details emerged: First, a cloud of dust rose up behind each moving speck. Then, the unified silhouette of horse and rider sharpened. Then, the colors and shapes separated and clarified. The riders were women and girls, sun shining on their satin robes and bright scarves. They were men and boys, wearing wool robes and thigh-high black leather boots.
