On the Bugut Inscription and Mausoleum Complex
Dr. Cengiz Alyilmaz
The Bugut inscription is one of the old Turkic inscriptions found in Mongolia. It drives its name from the Bugut These texts are basically on "the order of the Turk/Bilge Kagan Nivar to erect a monument on the death of Mahan Tigin", "the joint reign of Mahan Tigin and Muhan Kagan", "the ascend of Mahan Tigin to the throne", "the joint reign of Mahan Tigin and Tatpar Kagan (Taspar kagan)" , and so on, what happened during the years 572-580 AD. This Bugut Inscription is a didactic text and a narrator of the historical events. With these features it also set the example for the later Turkic inscriptions. From top to the bottom with its turtle like base it has the hight of 2.45 m. On the front of the top part (the entire right side has been ruined) the figure of a child breast-fed by a wolf was inscribed (see photos 1 and 2). It is due to the fact that this monument is situated on a turtle-like base that Kol Tigin, Bilge Kagan, Taryat, Tes, Sine Us, and many other inscriptions were also erected on a turtle-like base, and also the same figure of a child breast-fed by a wolf, though in different forms, is found on the top of Kol Tigin and Bilge Kagan inscriptions. In contrast to the inscriptions erected later on there does not exist any kind of seal (kagan seal or boy (tribe) seal) on this Bugut inscription. We believe that it is necessary to disclose the materials and information gained during our works in the years of 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2001, with some suggestions.

Mongolia is home to one of the world's purest lake environments, a huge area of unique taiga forest and several endangered species, including the snow leopard. The Academy of Natural Sciences has established The Institute for Mongolian Biodiversity and Ecological Studies to study Mongolia's environment and assist its peoples in both conserving these resources and encouraging economic development through ecological tourism. For an interesting review and perspective on the Academy's program in Mongolia and its significance for biodiversity and environmental protection, please see the article written by Malcolm Scully (Special Editor) and published in the March 24, 2000 issue of the

Slow News Month
If you follow Ulaanbaatar news here, you'll notice that news has not been updated lately. That's not because we've not been on top of the job. Though summertime fines the staff of Ulaanbaatar.net in the countryside a bit more than we probably have a right to be, winter does see us in town more often. However, the last two weeks have simply been slow, news-wise. Not much happening. We've caught up this week, though, and hope you enjoy our updates. Ice Sculptures Are Here
Ulaanbaatar's 2003 Ice Sculputres were a roaring sucess. Have a look at some of the sculptures in our slideshow presentation Have a look at some of the amazing ice sculptures that graced this year's presentation, and enjoy some of what Ulaanbaatar has to offer its residents.
