Mongolian Culture
The Mongolian way of life is nomadic and intimately connected with the ways of animals. Despite urbanisation, the traditions of the steppes live on. Even in the cities, most Mongolians continue to live in a ger , a large, white felt tent that can be moved easily and has a universal layout: the door always faces south; towards the back and a little to the west is the place of honour set aside for guests; the back of the ger, the khoimor , is the place for elders and most treasured possessions; and on the back wall is the family altar, with Buddhist images, family photos and suitcases. Get a local to explain the dozens of traditional, religious and superstitious rules and customs associated with gers. Mongolians have always taken wholeheartedly to Tibetan Buddhism and the links between Mongolia and Tibet are old and deep. Once in a lifetime, every devout Buddhist Mongolian tries to reach the holy city of Lhasa; the Tibetans in turn have relied on various Mongolian tribes to sustain their power. In Mongolia at the time of the communist takeover in 1921, there were 110,000 lamas (monks) living in about 700 monasteries. Beginning in the 1930s, thousands of monks were arrested, sent to Siberian labour camps and never heard from again. Monasteries were closed and ransacked and all religious worship and ceremonies outlawed. Not until 1990 was freedom of religion restored. Since then, there's been a phenomenal revival of Buddhism (and other religions). Monasteries have reopened, and even some ex-Communist Party officials have become lamas. Monasteries and temples (

http://www.fpmt.org/mongolia/history.html
The Rise and Fall of the Great Buddhist Culture of Mongolia Despite a long period of Soviet communist control this century, and the massacre of two generations of monks and scholars, Mongolia is now experiencing a revival of a spiritual way of life that had long defined its culture. Buddhism arrived in Mongolia in the third century B.C.E. with silk traders from India. It flourished for centuries until, in 1577 C.E., the Mongolian title Dalai ("Ocean of Wisdom") was bestowed on a visiting Tibetan lama, Sonam Gyatso, by the ruling King of Mongolia in 1577, thus creating the lineage of the Dalai Lamas of Tibet. By the twentieth century, after a peaceful communist revolution that should have brought independence, the country was caught in a political struggle with China, and sought sanctuary in Soviet military support. But by the 1930s, Mongolia was under complete Soviet control and suffered violent purges in every aspect of the culture. Over 60,000 monks, nuns and scholars were killed or incarcerated. All but three of the 700 monasteries were destroyed. Suppression under communist rule lasted over seventy years. However in 1989 Mongolia gained independence from Soviet domination and adopted a democratic government.

Arts From prehistoric oral epics to the latest movie from MongolKino, the many arts of Mongolia convey the flavour of nomadic life. Watching dancers in a ger or a professional ensemble on the stage of a theatre in Ulaanbaatar is a reminder that Mongolia has evolved traditional and unique songs, music, dances, costumes, paintings styles, sculptures, plays, films, crafts, carpets and textiles. One surprise about Ulaanbaatar is the number, and quality, of cultural shows in the various theatres. The buildings themselves – from the salmon-pink walls with Greek columns of the opera and dance theatres to the bold copper Mongolian roof of the Palace of Culture – express the hybrid culture Mongolia has forged from all sides. Most Mongolians may be unable to afford to see their own circus and dance and opera troupes, but a major cultural renaissance is under way, as Mongolians rediscover what the Soviets had repressed.

Language PEOPLES Archaeological finds suggest that primitive man appeared in what is now Mongolia 300,000 to 350,000 years ago and recent investigations suggest that Mongols take their origin from the Huns (or Huunu) who lived in Central Asian Countries many years ago. The term 'Mongol' only gained prominence in the early 13th Century with the emergence of the Mongolian ethnic unit and the formation of a single state. The word 'Mon gol' has two suggested meanings. The first is a geographical name 'Mon gol' which means the river Mon. The second suggestion is that it should be pronounced 'Mun gol', interpreting 'Mun' as correct, basic or true and 'gol' as pivot, centre or essence. The combination would then be 'true essence'. The development of the present ethnic composition has gone through several historical stages. The formation and disintegration of numerous military tribal alliances of ancient nomads and their mass migrations over vast expanses of the Euro-Asian steppes, resulted in the emergence of the Mongolian Nationality which consists 86% of Khalkh-Mongol tribes. The population of Mongolia consists of twenty ethnic groups although their are few differences in language. Only the Kazakhs speak in their mother tongue. Kazakhs, Derbets, Buryats and other national minorities are concentrated where they have always lived.

Material Culture: The Ger, the Deel, and the Altar in the 20th Century Mongolian Political Culture of Democracy from Genghis Khan to Today Democratic ... Back to Main What is Political Culture? In order to talk about a country's political culture, we must first define culture. Anthropologists have worked on a definition of culture for over 150 years. The definition used by many anthropologists today comes from Professor Clifford Geertz of the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton University. He wrote, Believing that man is an animal suspended in webs of significance he himself has spun, I take culture to be those webs, and the analysis of it to be . . . an interpretive [science] in search of meaning. In other words, while people create a culture just as the spider creates a web, people cannot live without culture any more than a spider can survive without its web. And just as different species of spider build webs with different patterns, so different groups of people create different cultures. What then is culture? It is the lens through which groups of people (members of a society or an entire society) interpret the things they observe and experience. This lens varies from one culture to another. One culture may interpret an exploding volcano as the result of shifting tectonic plates in the earth's crust; another may interpret it as the anger of some force or god at the misbehavior of a people.

Back to Main Mongolian Political Culture of Democracy from Genghis Khan to Today Mongolians today value democratic government. In fact, for a country that endured 70 years of Communist rule, they took to democracy very fast. Why would this be so? Was it the influence of Western culture at the end of the 1980s? Was it Mongolians' own nomadic life, where nomads were free to come and go even when the government and class system were hierarchical? Or was it the Mongolian tradition of valuing democratic principles handed down to them by Genghis Khan? It was probably a combination of these three factors. "...Genghis Khan established these democratic principles 9 years before King John signed the Magna Carta..."

History of Buryatia (Ar Mongol)
The Mongolian Ancestral Homeland
The Buryats are a Mongolian people numbering approximately 252,000 (1995 estimate of Buryats in Buryat republic) whose lands are located north of the Russian-Mongolian border near Lake Baikal. Buryatia lies within an area long contested by Russia, China, and (before 1945) Japan. Thus, historically and today, Buryatia has precariously existed amid the competing spheres of influence of more powerful neighbors. In the post-Soviet era, Buryatia has safeguarded its interests by maintaining good relations with Russia, of which it is a constituent part, and by establishing economic and political ties with independent Mongolia and China (through China's "Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region"). Another avenue by which Buryats attempt to mitigate Moscow's control is by cultivating links with a wider Mongolian cultural sphere. It should also be noted that Buryat Mongols do not only live in Buryatia, but also are significant minorities in Mongolia and Inner Mongolia as well. Mongolia's Dornod, Hentii, Selenge, Tuv, Bulgan, and Huvsgul Aimags, most of which border on Buryatia or Chita Oblast, have significant Buryat Mongol populations. Today many Mongolian Buryats hold important positions in government, business, and in the scholarly community. In Inner Mongolia the Hulun Buir region bordering Dornod Aimag also has a Buryat group called the Shinheeni Buryats, and a Mongolian group called the Dagur, who had fled Buryat lands after they fell under control of the Russians. This article, however, will focus mainly on the Buryat Mongols living within today's Russian Federation.

Implicit Nationalism
The result of Mongolia's economic development and urbanization was a population that was, on the one hand, increasingly and unprecedentedly divided by occupation, education, residence, and membership in well-defined and fairly rigid status groups, but that was, on the other hand, less clearly distinguished from that of other economically developed and urbanized countries. If being Mongolian meant living in a ger Apart from the significant omission of Buddhism and the Buddhist church, much of traditional Mongol culture was studied, preserved, and transmitted to the younger generation as a source of national pride. In early 1989, party general secretary Jambyn Batmonh told a Soviet interviewer that the harmful errors of the 1930s included destruction of the monasteries and with them the priceless cultural heritage of the Mongolian people. In 1989 the party called for overcoming indifference to the national cultural heritage, and efforts were under way to change the negative evaluation of Chinggis, who had been condemned as a bloodthirsty and aggressive conqueror of, among other places, Russia. Higher secondary schools began teaching the traditional Mongol script, replaced by Cyrillic in February 1946. In early 1989, the trade union newspaper Hodolmor (Labor) called for mass production of the traditional Mongol gown, the
