Student Essay
This essay was written by a recent participant in this program and may help you better understand what students experience during their semester abroad. Liliana Goldman
SIT Study Abroad Alum, Fall 2001 As a result of the SIT Asia Fund scholarship, funded by the Freeman Foundation, that was awarded to me in the fall of 2001, I was able to participate on the SIT Study Abroad program in Mongolia. This program focused on cultural observation and understanding through direct living and interaction with local families, as well as through specific independent projects focused on different cultural and developmental issues present in modern-day Mongolia. I knew almost immediately upon arriving in Mongolia that the Mongolian music traditions are very unique. My interest in Mongolian music was spawned in my first homestay with a family of nomads. This particular homestay took place within a week of my arrival in Mongolia, and as such I spoke hardly a word of the language. Yet I was dropped off with a family of nomads of Buriad origin, a particular ethnic minority of northern Mongolia, for 10 days straight with no real means of communicating lingually with them.

The Mongolian way of life is nomadic and intimately connected with the ways of animals. Despite urbanisation, the traditions of the steppes live on. Even in the cities, most Mongolians continue to live in a ger , a large, white felt tent that can be moved easily and has a universal layout: the door always faces south; towards the back and a little to the west is the place of honour set aside for guests; the back of the ger, the khoimor , is the place for elders and most treasured possessions; and on the back wall is the family altar, with Buddhist images, family photos and suitcases. Get a local to explain the dozens of traditional, religious and superstitious rules and customs associated with gers. Mongolians have always taken wholeheartedly to Tibetan Buddhism and the links between Mongolia and Tibet are old and deep. Once in a lifetime, every devout Buddhist Mongolian tries to reach the holy city of Lhasa; the Tibetans in turn have relied on various Mongolian tribes to sustain their power. In Mongolia at the time of the communist takeover in 1921, there were 110,000 lamas (monks) living in about 700 monasteries. Beginning in the 1930s, thousands of monks were arrested, sent to Siberian labour camps and never heard from again. Monasteries were closed and ransacked and all religious worship and ceremonies outlawed. Not until 1990 was freedom of religion restored. Since then, there's been a phenomenal revival of Buddhism (and other religions). Monasteries have reopened, and even some ex-Communist Party officials have become lamas. Monasteries and temples (

Mongolia History
Sandwiched between China and Russia in Central Asia, Mongolia is one of the world's oldest countries. Under the leadership of Genghis Khan and his successors, it was the It wasn't until the Soviet empire crumbled that the local system weakened. It is still not clear why communist leaders abdicated power in 1990, with no external pressures to do so. However, Mongolia's first free presidential elections, held in 1993, returned the old leaders to power - under a new name - with a large majority in Parliament. Since the collapse of communism, the country has experienced a renaissance of Buddhism and ancient tradition. Many younger Mongolians are also returning to the "old ways" - the kind of life their great-grandparents knew. Some things never changed: Almost 65% of the population still lives as nomads. Groups of seven to 25 students are lead by one or two academic directors. Mongolia is both protected and restricted by its dramatic physical environment, which includes the Gobi Desert as well as vast mountain and forest steppes. Landlocked between Siberia and northern China, this rugged nation remains largely isolated from global development efforts. Its essentially nomadic population continues to practice pastoralism, living in traditional ger, or felt tents, and moving constantly over an area twice the size of Texas. In the capital city of Ulaanbaatar, home of the Academy of Sciences and local universities, you study strategies for development and efforts to balance open-door policies with those that focus on nationalism and the protection of indigenous cultural values. Field excursions to Mongolia’s spacious interior, including a homestay in a nomadic camp, give you a firsthand appreciation of the endangered way of life that many Mongolians are striving to protect.

This is the same picture that was posted on the front page of my Mongolia webpage. This is one of my best Mongolian friend Gereltsetseg. Her parents are featured on the " Culture " page. Gerlee explained many aspects of Mongolia culture to me. In many ways, she was my Mongolian Culture teacher. She was one of my best students. After her graduation in 1996, she started working at the Erdenet Mining Corporation in the Commercial Department. She's now married and had her first child in September of 1998. This family belongs to one of my other best Mongolian friends, Oyunsuren. Pictured here are (L. to R.) Tungaa, Daria, Oyunsuren's grandmother, Oyunsuren, and Oyunsuren's mother. Oyunsuren also helped understand many things about Mongolian culture. Her family always helped me while I was in Mongolia (and even after I left). She is now married to a doctor and has a beautiful one year old daughter. One day she hopes to study language assessment in America. Hey, these girls don't look Mongolian!! Well, they aren't! Actually the town that I worked in, Erdenet, had many Russian ethnic groups.

More Mongolians are moving to the cities, and living in Russian-style apartment buildings, but the old nomadic lifestyle is still a way of life for many Mongolians. In the country, families move with the seasons to find food for their animals. They live in a large circular tent, called a ger, which has been cleverly designed to provide warmth in the bitterly cold winter, and cool shade in the summer. Gers are strong enough to withstand the fierce winds which sweep the steppe, yet they can be packed onto a single cart and reassembled in a few hours when the family reach their new grazing grounds. Even in the city, many families prefer to live in a ger in the “suburbs” on the outskirts of the cities. Others live in Russian-style apartment buildings, or in baishin – homes made of wood, mud and cement. The predominant religion is Tibetan Buddhism, with small numbers of Christians and Sunni Muslims. During communist rule, all religions were outlawed and thousands of Buddhist monks were arrested. Many were never seen again. Freedom of religion was restored in 1990, and since then, there has been a dramatic resurgence of interest in Buddhism and in many other religions.

It is a time of great need and even greater promise as Mongolia embraces its spiritual roots and establishes a clear path to liberation for the future. In late 1999, Kyabje Zopa Rinpoche established FPMT Mongolia (a non-profit corporation) to help reignite Buddhist culture in Mongolia, (which was almost completely destroyed by the Communist regime between 1921 to 1990) and to provide assistance for the poor and under-privileged. Four years have passed since the project's inception and there is now a great deal to report. Because of the generosity of our donors, FPMT Mongolia has made significant progress towards its goals. A Buddhist teaching centre is now flourishing in Ulaan Baatar, Idgaa Choezinling monastery is being rebuilt, the Dolma Ling Nunnery has been largely renovated, six Dharma books have been translated from English into Mongolian (and are available for free distribution) and, through the television series "Discovering Buddhism" and the FM-radio Dharma programs, thousands of Mongolians are being reawakened to their Buddhist heritage. Further, FPMT Mongolia is also responsible for administering the food program for two colleges in the Ganden Monastery Complex. More than 200 Sangha receive at least one meal per day through this program. In addition, FPMT Mongolia is about to start a program offering nourishing meals to a number of lay Mongolians, people who would otherwise go without, through a new soup kitchen in Ulaan Baatar. FPMT Mongolia works with Mongolians for Mongolians. Almost all our services are offered free of charge to the local people who would otherwise be unable to participate or attend. From free Dharma books and a regular schedule of Dharma teachings (all translated to the Mongolian language) at the centre, to offering free food to the poor and under-privileged in our new soup kitchen, we offer Mongolians the opportunity to learn 'real Dharma' that their ancestors once practiced.
