Planning for College:
How to Teach Your Child About Money

In a recent nationwide survey sponsored by the Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Finance Literacy, only 10% of high school seniors scored a C or better on a multiple choice exam that was designed to test basic financial skills. That's why no matter how old your child is now, it's essential to help them learn how to manage money wisely. Here are some suggestions to get started: Ages 5 to 10:
  • Begin giving your children a weekly allowance to offer hands-on money management experience. An allowance makes it easier to learn how to save because children know they'll get a set amount of money on a regular basis. According to a 1999 nationally representative survey commissioned by Zillions Magazine , about one-half of children ages 8 to 14 get an allowance. Children ages 8 and 9 averaged $3.74 a week; 10- and 11-year-olds averaged $5.19; 12- and 13-year-olds received $6.66; and 14-year-olds got $9.45. Let your children save for and buy something they really want. Savings habits are only reinforced with rewards, so saving must be tied to spending.

Citigroup and Do Something join forces to teach youth how to save, spend and succeed during financial education challenge LidRock lids featuring Pharrell Williams, Kelis, and Avril Lavigne to promote Financial Education Challenge (PRWEB) April 18, 2004 -– Do Something joins forces with Citigroup, the preeminent global financial services company, and LidRock, to teach youth the basics of money management through free downloadable curricula and a complementary online game during the Financial Education Challenge, kick-off April 19, 2004.
“Today’s youth have an unrealistic view of what they can afford on an entry level salary and the consequences that arise from overspending and the misuse of credit cards,” says Andrew Shue, actor and co-founder of Do Something. “We collaborated with Citigroup to create this program to empower youth to take control of their personal finances in preparation for life’s unexpected challenges.”
Do Something, in conjunction with Citigroup, created both a curriculum and a two-week fun-filled, interactive game to help educators and parents teach young people about money management in class or after school.

Louisiana high school teachers are returning to the classroom this summer to learn how to teach money management to students. This class in Baton Rouge was introduced to the National Endowment for Financial Education’s High School Financial Planning Program by LSU AgCenter faculty members.
High School Teachers Return To Classroom,
Prepare To Teach Money Management
Louisiana’s teachers are gearing up to teach teens how to manage their money – and how to plan for their future by learning skills now that will be valuable right up to retirement. Even more, the teachers are returning to the classroom just in time: The 2003 Louisiana Legislature passed Senate Bill 38, which requires the free enterprise curriculum in the state’s high schools to include instruction in personal finance, beginning in September 2004. "About 300 of the state’s teachers are taking advantage of this free opportunity for professional development," said Dr. Jeanette Tucker, LSU AgCenter family economist, who is a major force in the effort to help make Louisiana high school students more savvy about finances.

The need for money management skills
This site is designed to help you teach 6-12 graders to manage money. The need for such practical instruction is a serious one. Both test scores and the current money management behavior of young people prove that they lack the basics in this, one of the most important areas of their lives. And because the facts about a great many Americans' spending and saving habits are troublesome, many adults appear ill-equipped to teach their offspring. Consequently, while young people may look to their parents as role models, our nation's adults may not have the mentoring skills needed to give our youth good financial habits. Two cases in point:
  • 34% of Americans have not even begun to prepare for retirement. And 55% say that the major obstacle to saving is a continuing focus on today's expenses rather than their financial future.*
As a country, we have to reverse this trend. We have designed The Mint to help you lay the groundwork for a responsible approach to teaching students about personal money management. You'll find that The Mint is divided into two major areas: pages for students and pages for mentors, teachers and parents.

Find out the latest business news from around the world. You are in: My Money Savings SAVINGS Teach your kids how to save Iona Minton Posted Tue, 20 Aug 2002 Teaching your children how to manage money requires that you become very pro-active. The teaching and training process must become a lifestyle. The most efficient way to teach your children is by example. Therefore it is imperative that you become a living example of what you want to teach. Even if you have made mistakes in the past, you must become committed to living a life in the future that will provide your children with the example they need. The decisions that you make with your money might be the only opportunity your children have to experience the reality of money management before they go out on their own. As your children grow up, the many opportunities for life lessons will be constantly changing. It might be as simple as making choices for the best value when grocery shopping or as advanced as helping you decide on a future car purchase, a new house or how to start a savings plan. The teaching and training opportunities are never ending

Advertisement a3=true;aW=300;aH=250;sBoxAd=true; A book I just read got me thinking about all the crap I learned in high school math class. Functions and relations, advanced geometry what pi in the sky for a student whose career in the sciences ended when my brain seized up just 20 minutes into an inaugural chemistry class. The irony is that there's a whole world of math that would have been useful to learn. I'm talking here about the math of personal finance borrowing, budgeting, banking and such. Many students are clueless about personal finance, which means there should be a wide audience for a new book called Sink or Swim, Get Your Degree Without Drowning in Debt (Dundurn, $19.99). If you're a student attending college or university, or you're the parent of one, I suggest you take a look. Author Sarah Deveau's point in writing the book is to impart the sort of money-management wisdom that you generally acquire only after fumbling along making costly mistakes.

How to
Teach Kids to Save
You will do your children a big favor by teaching them the value of money if you give them an allowance in return for chores. They will learn the importance of saving towards future goals and gain the self discipline and skills that so many people lack in today's society. 1. Start an allowance when a child starts elementary school. School signals the beginning of important responsibilities for children. 2. Set a specific time when money is distributed and stick to it (just like the real world). Being late implies it's OK to be irresponsible. 3. Distribute allowance at the beginning or middle of the week. Most kids spend most of their money on the weekends. Giving early in the week forces them to think about how they'll spend it later. 4. Make the allowance large enough so that some of it can be saved. It will also give the child an opportunity to develop a need to save. 5. As children get older, increase their allowance and what it should cover. This gives them more experience managing larger sums of money to make choices about how to spend it. 6. Consider your income when deciding how much to give. But here are general "salaries" per week:

Teach Your Kids About Money
By InCharge Institute of America, Inc. Tell your children the truth about family finances. As soon as your children are old enough to understand, include them in your family's budgeting, planning, and saving processes. That way, your kids can develop down to earth expectations about what the family can or cannot afford. They will also learn how their own actions (working and saving) can help them get the things they want without financial distress. Be a money management role model for your children. Make sure your own financial behavior is responsible, and sound. If you let them see you "robbing Peter to pay Paul" month after month, they may grow up thinking that's an acceptable way to handle bills. If you use credit cards, make sure your kids also see you checking your credit card statements and paying your bills on time. Show your children that "plastic" is not an endless source of money with no strings attached. Let your children manage their own funds. Whether it's an allowance or earnings from a part-time job, help your kids learn to handle money sensibly. Encourage them to save and guide them in setting up a personal budget. Teach them how to comparison-shop. You may even have to let them suffer the consequences of their spending mistakes. When they know that you won't always bail them out of bad spending decisions, your kids will learn to make better spending choices.

Unions, far from being obsolete, are still necessary
In response to J. Zemencik's April 11 letter ("Unions Have Outlived the Important Purpose That They Served") : I strongly disagree with his claim that unions have outlived their usefulness. The assumption that labor's hard-fought battles for "working hours, overtime pay and safe working conditions" are foregone victories that can now be taken for granted seems dangerously naive. Regarding the writer's aspersion of hypocrisy on the part of union members, I'd counter that many unionists do still purchase union-made vehicles, eschew shopping at Wal-Mart and the like, etc. In a complex globalized market, however, it's often difficult to tell when our purchases imply complicity in worker exploitation. That doesn't mean that we've abandoned our principles and that we're complacent, but only that we're confounded sometimes. When there is an obvious option for supporting fair labor practices, like patronizing unionized hotels for a labor union convention, why should we be faulted for doing that?

A worthwhile read
Actually, I wasn't too thrilled by this book at first and actually hated it. Seemed too flowery. Like make believe. Then I was introduced to a businessman in my community who amassed a net worth in excess of a million dollars in real estate and business in less than 2 years and he credited the technques and ideas taught by Kiyosaki for his wealth. I went to work and in my first month made more money than my college professors make in a year. What can I say-It WORKS. IT REALLY WORKS!
Changed my life too. I agree with the reader from Tx
