Churches teach money management to aid parishioners
May 16, 2004 PHOENIX Many Americans never learned sound money-management skills. They missed the basics at home, in school, on the job and from friends and now they're paying the price with high credit-card debt, paltry savings accounts and rising bankruptcies. ADVERTISEMENT But some people are finding help from an unlikely source as churches and other religious groups step up to the personal-finance plate. Many places of worship now conduct financial workshops, tout faith-based mutual funds, bring in budget counselors, mentor small-business owners and otherwise deal with a matter long considered taboo. "A lot of preachers have been afraid to talk about money because they fear people will leave if they do," said Cal Jernigan, senior pastor at Central Christian Church of the East Valley in Mesa, who recently devoted four weekly sermons to finance matters. "But a lot of churches also are looking at this and realizing many of their members are in trouble." Ronald Lundeen, an associate professor at the Hartford Seminary in Connecticut, said he's noticed an uptick in church interest in the topic over the past two years.

BY LISA MICHALS Knight Ridder Newspapers DULUTH, Minn. (KRT) - Brittanee Pfab wants an allowance. "I'd give her $5 a week. She wants $6," said her mother, Brenda. Until recently, the Duluth mother gave her 13-year-old daughter money to do things like go to the movies with friends. Heir-Raising Lessons BY EILEEN AND JON GALLO Teach your children the value of money. Lesson One
Lesson Two

Lesson Three
"How much money does it take to ruin a child?" Eileen was asked this question several times during a multiyear study of family wealth she conducted for her doctoral dissertation in psychology. The answer is the subject of our book Silver Spoon Kids: How Successful Parents Raise Responsible Children . We found that money does not have to ruin your child. But raising responsible children in an affluent environment does not happen by chance; it takes intentional parenting. In the workshops we offer based on Silver Spoon Kids [Eileen is a psychotherapist and Jon an estate-planning attorney], we like to quote our friend Jilliene Schenkel, who also counsels families about the intergenerational transfer of wealth. Jilliene uses a red Corvette analogy when she discusses children and money. If you give your teenager a red Corvette for his sixteenth birthday but don't bother with driving lessons, why would you be shocked when he gets into an accident?

National Endowment for Financial Education
Banking on Our Future The Basics Teach your teen how to handle credit cards advertisement Like it or not, credit is part of life, and your children need to learn smart ways to manage it. These strategies will ensure your kids get the right start, and don’t wind up with bad habits. By Liz Pulliam Weston When I first proposed writing about teaching kids to use credit cards, my editor groaned and said we might as well do a story called “How to get your kids started with crack.” Unfortunately, credit has more than a few things in common with the highly addictive street drug. Both are readily available and seem cheap at first. But both can lead to a spiral of financial devastation and emotional despair. Unlike cocaine, though, credit is pretty much a necessity in the modern world. A good credit rating will make it easier for your children to rent their first apartments, land good jobs, get better rates on their insurance coverage and buy homes.

Volume 5, Issue 20 May 18, 2001 Allowances That Teach Money Management According to most statistics financial pressures account for nearly half of the divorces in America today. That's an alarming fact that could be avoided if folks would use common sense in money management. We must live within our means or we'll soon have bills that we cannot meet and the pressure that comes with unmet obligations. For many couples it is too late. They have already experienced this tragedy of poor financial management and a broken home as a result. Someone said, "The best way to solve a problem is to prevent it."
I believe we can prevent problems of financial mismanagement for our children if we will teach them at an early age to live within their means and to manage wisely what they have. Some time ago I came across an article on giving children allowances in a way that will teach them at an early age how to manage money. I hope this helps parents in your quest for training up your children in the way that they should go.
One of the reasons parents give children allowances is to help them learn how to manage money. But to be a truly effective teaching tool parents need to spell out what the allowance will cover, how it can be spent, that consequences of overspending, and how much should be saved or given to charity. Here are some of the guidelines:

KIDS AND FINANCES: Teach youngsters money management skills early
July 22, 2002 BY NEIL DOWNING
KNIGHT RIDDER-TRIBUNE Children typically start showing some interest in money between ages 3 and 5, so that's a good time to start teaching them some basic lessons, said Don Blandin, president of the American Savings Education Council in Washington. RELATED CONTENT
  • Next generation of big spenders: Today's teens have plenty of money to burn
  • THE ALLOWANCE DILEMMA: Setting amount depends on income, kid's needs "Look at it this way: Kids that age are with their mom or dad for hundreds of trips to the grocery store," Blandin said. "That's a good time to teach them that a dime is worth more than a nickel even though it's smaller!" The point is to "turn routine activities into what we call 'teachable money moments,' " said Blandin, whose group tries to raise public awareness about saving and planning. When you're in a store, for example, ask your child to help you find the lowest-priced item, he said. Even in kindergarten, a child can start learning "very simple concepts" about money and the economy, said Jeffrey Blais, president of the Rhode Island Council on Economic Education, which promotes programs for school teachers.

Search Don't teach children money management with kid gloves Published in Sun Publications 02/19/04 While I never as a child thought that money grew on trees, I did think my parents had lots of it. It's not that we had extravagant furnishings in our home or were always wearing designer clothes, but that I rarely remember ever needing or wanting anything without getting it. If I needed new clothes, I got them. Since I want to teach my kids from a young age about money management, I've been doing some research into the best way to do this. Here's a glimpse into what I've learned. Seek advice For starters, parents benefit greatly from asking other people what they're doing or have done to teach their children about money. Start with people you already know, including relatives, parents of your kids' friends, your parents, etc. Then consult experts, such as your financial adviser or personal accountant, for additional ideas. Start talking Next, it's important to weave the topic of money into your conversations and daily activities. Moms and dads with kids ages 4 to 8 could introduce the topic of money during story time with the help of such books as "Trouble With Money," written by Stan and Jan Berenstain. Parents of preteens or teens could browse a Web site called The Mint, at www.themint.org, with their kids. Dedicated to promoting financial literacy among youths, the site teaches them about such topics as saving, spending and investing.
