Francia Occidentalis, France
Margraves and Counts of Flanders, 862-1405 AD
Flanders (Vlaanderen in Flemish, Flandre in French) is historically significant for a number of reasons. Perhaps the most important reason, in the long run, was that it became the site of the first major development of commercial culture in Northern Europe. By the 13th century, the largest cities in Francia north of the Alps were, with Paris and London, Ghent (Gent or Gand) and Bruges (Brugge, preserving much of its Mediaeval look even today), which led northern Europe in the development of trade and manufacture. Since nothing of the sort had happened there under the Romans, it gives us a milestone in the emergence of Europe from under the Roman shadow, and from the economic nadir of the Dark Ages. This economic development and power is what made Burgundy under its Valois Dukes Another reason for the significance of Flanders, of less significance in the long run but rather spectacular (if sordid) at the time, was that a Count of Flanders, Baldwin IX, was installed by the Fourth Crusade as the Roman Emperor in Constantinople. This turned out to be a brief and miserable business Baldwin himself was soon captured in battle with the Bulgarians, dying while a prisoner but it was certainly a long way to come just from being Count of Flanders. Finally, Flanders passed by marriage first to the Dukes of Burgundy and then to the Hapsburgs. Because of the inheritance of the Hapsburgs, Flanders ended up, uniquely, as the only territory that began Middle Ages as part of France but ended them, as it still is, alienated from France. This was not for want of French efforts. In 1701, Louis XIV had effectively occupied all of the Spanish Netherlands, including Flanders. The decisive moment, however, came with the Battle of Ramillies in 1706, when John Churchill, the 1st

Giuly strike puts Monaco in clear
Story Tools PARIS, France (Reuters) Monaco went three points clear in France with a 2-0 win over RC Lens lit up by a stunning volley from Ludovic Giuly, while Olympique Marseille kept in touch with a victory by the same margin at Lille. Lens were weathering intermittent Monaco pressure with ease when Jerome Rothen crossed from the left and Giuly flipped into the air to volley home right-footed at shoulder height. The midfielder then turned provider for Fernando Morientes. He beat three defenders before crossing for the former Real Madrid striker to head home at the far post. Monaco have 33 points from 14 games, three more than champions Olympique Lyon who beat Racing Strasbourg 1-0 on Friday thanks to an injury-time penalty from Peguy Luyindula. Third-placed Olympique Marseille, beaten 4-1 at home by Lyon in their last game, have 27 points after Ivorian striker Didier Drogba scored one and set up Ahmed Mido for the second. Drogba, Giuly and Montpellier's Habib Bamogo have eight goals, two behind leading scorer Djibril Cisse of Auxerre.

The most famous circuit in the south of France, the race of Monaco, is the most glamour event of the Formula One calendar.
Thanks to its famous heritage, this circuit is the one that each team and driver do not want to miss.
With frighteningly tight corners and bends, plus high walls and slippery white lines, Monaco is also a nightmare in the wet. Only 3.3 km long, the circuit runs through the streets of Monaco and then along the famous harbour.
Many great races have been fought in the past and many masters of Grand Prix Racing have left their hallmarks. Just to name a few, Senna, Fangio, and Clark. Loisirs Services Animations

Status quo as Monaco salvage draw
Story Tools PARIS, France (AP) Monaco came from behind to secure a 1-1 tie away to struggling Toulouse on Saturday and maintain its four point cushion over Lyon in the French first division. Defender Gael Givet struck in the 73rd minute, after Sylvain Didot had opened the scoring for third-to-last Toulouse in the 47th. Meanwhile, two-time defending champion Lyon failed to capitalize on Monaco's slip, managing only a 1-1 tie itself after taking the lead at mid-table Lens. Midfielder Vikash Dhorasoo opened the scoring for Lyon in the 34th, but striker Wagneau Eloi enjoying his third spell with the Northern French club rescued a point for Lens in the 70th minute. In the standings Monaco now has 55 points, followed by Lyon (51), Paris Saint-Germain (49), and Auxerre(45). In the relegation battle, Le Mans is last on 21 points, behind Montpellier (22) and Toulouse (22). Toulouse edges ahead of Montpellier on goals difference.

Monaco stay top with 3-0 victory
Story Tools PARIS, France (Reuters) An injury-time penalty earned Olympique Marseille a 2-1 win against Nice on Saturday, keeping them in touch with leaders Monaco who eased past Toulouse 3-0 to maintain their one-point advantage in France. On a night when the league's four strongest teams were at home, Marseille looked as if they would be the only ones to miss out on three points at the Stade Velodrome. Paris St Germain beat AJ Auxerre 1-0 and champions Olympique Lyon thrashed Lens 4-0 with a Juninho hat-trick. Drawing 1-1 in the fourth minute of injury time Marseille were given a penalty when Ahmed Hossam Mido was pulled back in the area. The referee initially played advantage and then pointed to the penalty spot, prompting a furious reaction from the Nice players. Ivorian Didier Drogba scored his second goal of the night from the spot to end a mini-slump for Marseille who play Partizan Belgrade in the Champions League on Wednesday.
