Monaco - Monte Carlo History The Rock of Monaco was a shelter for primitive populations. Traces of their occupation were discovered in a cave in the Saint-Martin Gardens. The first sedentary inhabitants of the region, the Ligures, are described as a mountain people, accustomed to hard work and an exemplary frugality. The coast and the port of Monaco were probably the sea access for the interior Ligurian population, the Oratelli of Peille. The origin of the name "Monaco" has been subject to several hypotheses. For some, the name comes from the Ligurian tribe, the Monoïkos, who inhabited the Rock in the 6th century B.C. For others, the origin comes from the Greek. In antiquity, the port of Monaco was associated with the cult of the hero Herakles (Hercules for the Romans), and his name was often linked to the expression "Herakles Monoïkos," which means Herakles alone. This version seems to bear out, as the modern name for Monaco's main port is the Port of Hercules. At the end of the 12th century B.C., the Romans occupied the region. Monaco is part of the Province of the Maritime Alps. During their occupation, the Romans erected at La Turbie, the Trophy of Augustus, which celebrates the triumph of their military campaigns. During this same period, Phoenecian and Carthaginian sailors brought prosperity to the region. After the fall of the Roman Empire (5th century A.D.), the region was regularly sacked by different barbarian populations. It was only at the end of the X century, after the expulsion of the Sarrasins by the Count of Provence, that the coast slowly became repopulated.

Subscriptions The Monegasque royal family From left to right: Princess Caroline, Prince Albert, Prince Rainier and Princess Stephanie The House of Grimaldi has ruled the tiny principality of Monaco on the Mediterranean coast for over 700 years. The first Lord of Monaco, a merchant-turned-pirate called Lanfranco Grimaldi, was Italian by birth and a member of the Genoan Guelphic family who invaded the area in 1297, following an economic dispute with rival clan, the Ghibellines.
When Lanfranco died in 1309, he was succeeded by his first cousin, Rainier I, from whom all subsequent Monegasque monarchs are descended. Rainier was also a seafaring man, but unlike those of his predecessor, the new leader's trading activities were legitimate, and eventually earned him the respect of the French monarch who appointed him Grand Admiral of France in 1304.
Monaco became a principality when the then ruler Honoré II assumed the title of prince in 1612. At that point the territory was still under the protection of Spain, with whom it had been linked since 1524, but the Treaty of Peronne in 1641 allied it instead with France. Subsequent Monegasque sovereigns upped their title count by marrying a string of French heiresses, which explains why, in addition to the title of Sovereign Prince of Monaco, the head of the principality can lay claim to 19 other titles.

A.D. In the 7th cent. it was part of the kingdom of the Lombards , and in the 8th cent. of the kingdom of Arles . It was under Muslim domination (8th cent.) after the Saracens invaded France. Monaco was ruled by the Genovese Grimaldi family from the 13th cent. In 1731 the male line died out, but the French Goyon-Matignon family, which succeeded by marriage, assumed the name Grimaldi. Monaco was under Spanish protection from 1542 to 1641, under French protection from 1641 to 1793, annexed to France in 1793, and under Sardinian protection from 1815 to 1861. The districts of Menton and Roquebrune (long part of Monaco) were incorporated (1848) into Sardinia, which in turn ceded them to France in 1860.

History of MONACO Status of Monaco
Monaco is a sovereign state. It is a principality, and the title of Prince of Monaco is hereditary. It is currently held by Rainier III Grimaldi The lordship of Monaco has passed through many families. The terms of the treaty are as follows: Article 1 The Government of the French Republic ensures the defense of the independence and sovereignty of the Principality of Monaco and guarantees the integrity of its territory as if this territory were part of France. In turn, the government of his Serene Highness the Prince of Monaco commits itself to exercising its rights of sovereignty in perfect accordance with the political, military, naval and economic interests of France. Article 2 Measures concerning the international relations of the Principality will always be subject to prior agreement between the princely government and the French government. The same applies to measures concerning, directly or indirectly, the exercise of a regency or the succession to the crown which, either by marriage, adoption or otherwise, shall only devolve to a person of French or Monegasque nationality and approved by the French government. Article 3 Subsequently Charlotte, an illegitimate daughter of Louis, was adopted by him in Paris in the presence of the French president on May 16, 1919, she was titled duchesse de Valentinois by Albert I on May 20, 1919 and heir apparent on August 1, 1922 after Louis II's accession. Louis II died in 1949. In the absence of any male heir to the Goyon-Matignon family, the titles of Valentinois and Estouteville became extinct. Charlotte had married Pierre de Polignac, a member of a junior branch of the Polignac family, on March 19, 1920, and he had been naturalised as Monegasque and his name and arms had been changed to those of Grimaldi the previous day. She had ceded her rights to her son Rainier in 1944. Consequently, the principality of Monaco passed to Rainier III.

    HISTORY
Founded in 1215 as a colony of Genoa, Monaco has been ruled by the House of Grimaldi since 1297, except when under French control from 1789 to 1814. Designated as a protectorate of Sardinia from 1815 until 1860 by the Treaty of Vienna, Monaco's sovereignty was recognized by the Franco-Monegasque Treaty of 1861. The Prince of Monaco was an absolute ruler until a constitution was promulgated in 1911. In July 1918, a treaty was signed providing for limited French protection over Monaco. The treaty, written into the Treaty of Versailles, established that Monegasque policy would be aligned with French political, military, and economic interests. Prince Rainier III, the current ruler of Monaco, acceded to the throne following the death of his grandfather, Prince Louis II, in 1949. The current heir apparent, Prince Albert, was born in 1958. A new constitution, proclaimed in 1962, abolished capital punishment, provided for female suffrage, and established a Supreme Court to guarantee fundamental liberties. In 1993, Monaco became an official member of the United Nations with full voting rights.

FRENCH RIVIERA - SIGHTSEEING Sightseeing in the Riviera, Principaute de Monaco: The Principality of Monaco is comprised of three main parts : Monaco (the Rock and Prince's Palace), La Condamine (a bustling shopping area at the foot of the Rock) and Monte-Carlo, the central area around the Casino with the classiest hotels. An independent sovereign state located between the foot of the Southern Alps and the Mediterranean, the Principality of Monaco borders on several French villages: La Turbie, and Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. At the foot of the southern Alps, in the far south-eastern corner of France, bordering the Mediterranean sea, the Principality of Monaco benefits from an exceptionally mild climate which makes it a particularly sought-after destination. Its climate is extraordinarily mild due to the combined influences of the Alps and the Mediterranean, thus making Monaco a place where one can make the most of sea and mountains. Constant exposure to the international community, modernity, and sheer determination have all contributed to the Principality's ability to develop and ensure its independence. The very origins of the Principality illustrate this; over seven centuries the Princes of Monaco have transformed what was once barren land and arid rock into an economic success story.

PRINCESS CAROLINE OF MONACO Royalty Caroline is the eldest child of Monaco's Prince Rainier and his wife Princess Grace (the former movie star Grace Kelly). She has two siblings: Albert (b. 1958) and Stephanie (b. 1965). Caroline inherited her mother's beauty and early on became a favorite with the European society press. After the untimely 1982 death of her mother, Caroline became the ceremonial (if unofficial) first lady of Monaco. Caroline's first husband was French banker and playboy Philippe Junot; they were married in 1978 and divorced in 1980. She then was married to Italian industrialist Stefano Casiraghi from 1983 until his death was in a power-boat racing accident in 1990. In 1999 she married Prince Ernst August of Hanover; their daughter, Alexandra, was born later that year.
Extra credit : Caroline had three children with Stefano Casiraghi: Andrea (b. 1984), Charlotte (b. 1986) and Pierre (b. 1987)... As the eldest male child, Caroline's brother Albert is heir to Prince Ranier. However, Monaco's constitution was changed in 2002 so that if Albert dies without children, the throne will pass to Caroline and on to her children with Casiraghi.
