GEOGRAPHY: Monaco is second only to the Vatican as the smallest independent state in Europe. Set on the Mediterranean coast of France just a few miles from the Italian border, the principality is a constitutional monarchy and relies largely on foreign currency for an economic base. Its principal industry is tourism. The country is a narrow ribbon of coastline backed by the Alpes-Maritimes foothills, creating a natural amphitheatre overlooking the sea, with the population centred in four districts. Monaco-Ville is set on a rocky promontory dominating the coast. The Palace is the home of the Grimaldi family, the oldest ruling house in Europe. Monaco-Ville also boasts a fine Romanesque cathedral among its other attractions. La Condamine is the area around the Port, while Monte-Carlo is the main centre for business and entertainment. Fontvieille has been set aside as an area for new light industrial and residential development.
    Government: Constitutional monarchy.

    Geography of Monaco
Located on a tiny speck on France's eastern Mediterranean coast, Monaco is an awesome 1.95 square kilometres, 20 per cent of which has been reclaimed from the sea during the course of the last 20 years. Monaco lies on a narrow coastal strip which rises vertically upwards to its highest point of about 65m. Its width varies from between a kilometre and a mere 350m, and it is just 4kms long. The Principality has only one commune, Monaco, whose limits are the same as those of the state. It is divided into five areas. The centre of which is La Condamine which faces the famous habour. All land around it is elevated with the wealthy suburb of Monte Carlo to the west and the 'Rock', on which sits the Palace and famous Aquarium, to the west. It has borders on its landward side with several communes of the French Department of the Alpes-Maritimes; from west to east, these are: Cap d'Ail, la Turbie, Beausoleil and Roquebrune Cap Martin. Monaco also faces the Mediterranean Sea to the south. There isn't a great deal of geographic variety possible in such a small area. Most of Monaco is hilly, rugged and rocky, and there are some very fetching sea cliffs. In fact if you wander more than half a dozen blocks back from the harbour you begin to rise steeply and soon find oyurself back in France.
