    HISTORY
Moldova occupies most of what has been known as Bessarabia.
Moldova's location has made it a historic passageway between Asia
and southern Europe, as well as the victim of frequent warfare. Greeks,
Romans, Huns, and Bulgars invaded the area, which in the 13th century
became part of the Mongol empire. An independent Moldovan state
emerged briefly in the 14th century but fell under Ottoman Turkish rule in the 16th century. After the Russo-Turkish War of 1806-12, the eastern half of Moldova (Bessarabia) between the Prut and the Dniester Rivers was ceded to Russia, while Romanian Moldova (west of the Prut) remained with the Turks. Romania, which gained independence in 1878, took control of the Russian half of Moldova in 1918. The Soviet Union never recognized the seizure and created an autonomous Moldavian republic on the east side of the Dniester River in 1924. In 1940, Romania was forced to cede eastern Moldova to the U.S.S.R.

Jewish people have inhabited Bessarabia – the territory that makes up the bulk of what is now Moldova – since the 15 th century. During that time, it was a key transit stop for Jewish merchants traveling between Constantinople and Poland. By 1812, the land had come under Russian rule. The Jewish population steadily increased, numbering more than 200,000 by 1897. In 1903 and 1905, two of the most brutal pogroms in Jewish history took place in the capital city of Kishinev. Scores of people were murdered. Homes were looted and destroyed. Hundreds of children were gravely injured. The Kishinev pogrom of 1903 was later memorialized in Bialik’s famous poem " Al Hash’kita " ("On The Slaughter"). Following World War I, Moldova was ruled by Romania, and Jews were free to maintain their Jewish traditions. On the eve of World War II, there were about 300,000 Jews living in Moldova, and some 80,000 Jews perished at the hands of German and Romanian forces during the Holocaust. When Moldova became a constituent republic of the Soviet Union at the end of World War II, many Jewish institutions were closed and Jewish activities banned. The advent of independence in 1991 brought greater freedom and opportunity to Moldovan Jews, many of whom remembered the stories of their grandparents and were eager to reconnect to Jewish life. Between 1989 and 2001, 48,261 made

Files on the history of Bessarabia / Moldova still have to be written.
In the Middle Ages and Early Modern History, what is Moldova today formed part of the Duchy of Moldavia, together with the region on the west bank of the Pruth River, the latter since 1858/61 being part of Romania.
From 1512 to 1878, Moldavia (since 1858/61 Romania) was tributary to the Ottoman Empire.
In 1812 the Ottoman Empire ceded Bessarabia, i.e. the lands between Pruth and Dnjestr Rivers, to the Russian Empire.
In 1918, Romania annexed Bessarabia; within the Soviet Union , on the right bank of the Dnjestr, a tiny Moldovan ASSR was founded in 1924, autonomous within Ukraine until 1990. In 1939 the USSR annexed Bessarabia, and the Moldovan ASSR reached her present size. Moldova gained independence on December 30th 1991, when the USSR disintegrated.

    Early History
The Moldovians were subjected to vassal status by the Ottoman turks after their hard fought conquest of Wallachia. The greatest Moldavian, aptly named Stefan cel Mare (Stefan the Great) with his army of Boyars and retainers fought of invasions from the Turks , the Polish and the Tatars . Stefan fought 36 major battles and only lost 2. At the end of his reign, Moldovian independence was secured and no more Moldovian gold went to turkish hands as tribute. Moldova then experienced a "slump." Weak kings let incompitent boyars rule the state and not pay taxes, bankrupting the state. Moldova succumbed to Ottoman power in 1512 and was a tributary state of the empire for the next 300 years. In addition to paying tribute to the Ottoman Empire and later acceding to the selection of local rulers by Ottoman authorities, Moldova suffered repeated invasions by Turks, Crimean Tatars, and Russian In 1792 the Treaty of Iasi forced the Ottoman Empire to cede all of its holdings in what is now Transnistria to the Russian Empire. BRIEF HISTORY
The territory of Republic of Moldova encompassing an area between Prut and Nistru Rivers and the Black Sea was populated in ancient times by geto-daci tribes. In the 1 st Century B.C. the first state of geto-daci was established by Burebista (82-44 B.C.) who was a remarkable strategist, military man, organizer and diplomatist. By the middle of 1 st Century B.C. this state established itself as the main political and military power in Central Europe. However, being involved in conquest wars waged by the Roman Empire, the state created by Burebista soon following the death of the latter fell to the Romans. Decebal, Burebista’s successor killed himself and this territory was transformed into a Roman colony. Throughout the first millenium B.C. Moldova was populated and successively inhabited by different migratory people such as: Goths, Huns, Slavs, Bulgarians, Hungarians, etc. Following the Tartar invasion (1242) the whole region becomes politically controlled by the Golden Horde. The first independent Moldovan State was established in 1359 by Bogdan I and comprised the territories between the Eastern Carpathian Mountains, Nistru River, Black Sea and Danube. The fact that Moldova Principality was at the confluence of Russia, Austria and Turkey which disputed the supremacy in South-Eastern Europe, largely explains the territorial rupture subsequently carried out by large imperial powers.

    History
The Republic of Moldova is a small country, favorably situated in the Southeast part of Europe, neighboring Romania to the West and Ukraine to the East. This piece of land boasts a rich history, abundant in dramatic and agitated events.
From the XIV century it was a part of the Moldova Principality, situated between Oriental Carpathians and the Nistru river, in the north bounded by Hotin, and in the South – by the Low Danube and the Black Sea.
Following the Peace concluded in Bucharest, in 1812, a part of this territory was asigned to Czarist Russia, which called it Basarabia - an older name, earlier attributed to the southern part. The aim was to identify this territory as a separate geographic entity from the Moldova Principality. The Independence of the Democratic Republic of Moldova was proclaimed in January 1918. And later, on March 27 1918 it was decided to re-unite it with Romania. The next annexure process took place in 1940, following the Molotov - Ribbentrop summit. According to this Basarabia became part of the USSR and was proclaimed as the Soviet Socialist Republic of Moldavia. It comprised only nine Basarabian counties and six districts from the left bank of the Nistru River. The present territory of Moldova is smaller compared to the area attributed to Russian authorities in 1812, since the North Hotin, Acherman and the southern Ismail were given up in 1940 by the Soviet authorities to Ukraine.
