Most of Moldova's population are Orthodox Christians. In 1991, about 98.5 percent of the population belonged to this faith The Soviet government strictly limited the activities of the Orthodox Church (and all religions) and at times sought to exploit it, with the ultimate goal of destroying it and all religious activity. Most Orthodox churches and monasteries in Moldova were demolished or converted to other uses, such as warehouses, and clergy were sometimes punished for leading services. But many believers continued to practice their faith in secret In 1991 Moldova had 853 Orthodox churches and eleven Orthodox monasteries (four for monks and seven for nuns). In addition, the Old Russian Orthodox Church (Old Believers) had fourteen churches and one monastery in Moldova Before Soviet power was established in Moldova, the vast majority of ethnic Romanians belonged to the Romanian Orthodox Church (Bucharest Patriarchate), but today the Russian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) has jurisdiction in Moldova. Russian, Romanian, and Turkic (Gagauz) liturgies are used in the church. After the recent revival of religious activity, most of the clergy and the faithful wanted to return to the Bucharest Patriarchate but were prevented from doing so. Because higherlevel church authorities were unable to resolve the matter, Moldova now has two episcopates, one for each patriarchate. In late 1992, the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia issued a decree upgrading the Eparchy of Chisinau and Moldova to a metropolitan see

... Europe /Moldova MOLDOVA History and Government
History: Moldova’s Latin influence arises from its position on the fringes of the Roman Empire between AD 105 and 270. Over the next thousand years, the region variously came under the control of Huns, Ostrogoths, Magyars and Mongols. The Hungarians were in occupation when in 1349, Prince Bogdan established an independent principality (hence its original name of Bogdania before its present title, taken from the Moldova River in modern-day Romania). In 1512, the Ottomans moved in and more or less kept hold of the territory for the next three centuries. As an imperial border state (once again) Moldova was subject to frequent incursions by neighbouring powers, mainly the Russians who finally took over Moldova in 1792 under the terms of the treaty of Iasi. By 1861, Moldova had assumed its present form, including the sliver of land known as Transdnistria, to the east of the Dniester River and stretching east as far as the Romanian border (the territory went through more divisions, reallocations and occupation in the period up to 1945). The decision to ally with one or the other of its two more powerful neighbours – Russia and Romania – dominated Moldovan politics during the 20th century. Moldova next experienced a period of independence in 1918, in the course of the Russian Revolution, and then voted to become part of Romania. However, the Soviet Union objected and brought it within the Soviet orbit. It was then occupied by Soviet forces in 1940 under the terms of the Nazi-Soviet Pact. The German invasion of the Soviet Union put Moldova back under Nazi control; a brief period of unification with Romania followed before the Red Army overran it in 1944.

Moldova wants lower prices for imported Russian gas
The Moldavian government is negotiating with Russia on decreasing prices for gas supplies by Gazprom. Moldavian Prime Minister Vasiliy Tarlev has officially confirmed this information today. The Prime Minister pointed out that the current price was $80 for every 1,000 cubic meters of gas. According to an agreement signed by the Russian and Moldavian governments in Moscow on November 29, 2001, Moldova is to pay $60 for every 1,000 cubic meters when gas is delivered, and the other $20 is a three-year deferred payment with a 7-percent interest rate. Tarlev said Moldova wanted to negotiate the price at $60 without deferred payments for every 1,000 cubic meters.
In 2003 Gazprom is to export 1.6bn cubic meters of gas to the republic, including 785m cubic meters to Transnistria. Moreover, according to an agreement signed in December 2002, this year Moldova-gaz is to buy 1.1bn cubic meters of gas from the Russian company Gazexport at $61.5 for every 1,000 cubic meters.
