Modernism/Postmodernism/Neomodernism Victor A. Grauer Originally published in the Downtown Review I will say at the outset that I am involved in what I call “neomodernism,” which may be defined as a return to the most fundamental tenets of "formal­ist" modernism. This may seem an odd occupation in an era when we are apparently escaping from the long hegemony of modernism. Why return to modernism on the very threshold of a new style period: post‑modernism? My answer is that there is something very suspicious about this "post­modernism." Everyone who uses the term seems to have a different idea of what "post‑modernism" is supposed to be. For some, it begins with John Cage, Jasper Johns, Rauschenberg, "happenings" and concept art. For others it begins with the minimalist re­action against that sort of thing. Many intellectuals associate it with reflexive strategies growing out of structuralism. Anti‑intellectuals welcome it as a relief from strategies of any kind, a return to less problematic expressive modes which had been popular before modernism became dominant. Even this group is divided among proponents of straight realism, narrative, fantasy, decorative abstraction, punk and "new wave." Until we can agree on when post‑modernism began, it is impossible to deter­mine whether it is really new. Until we can decide what it actually is, regarding it as a style period would be premature. If post‑modernism can in fact only be defined negatively, as a rejection of modernism, of this re­jection we can be certain. Hardly a month passes when we are not made aware of yet another brave sally against the modernist goliath in the form of a book, magazine article or television series. Virtually everyone writing on the arts seems to be breathless­ly celebrating their liberation from the "preten­sions" of artists to whom they had once shameless­ly deferred.

The term postmodernism is sometimes applied to the literature and art after World War II (1939-45), when the effects on Western morale of the first war were greatly exacerbated by the experience of Nazi totalitarianism and mass extermination, the progressive devastation of the natural environment, and the omnious fact of overpopulation. Postmodernism involves not only a continuation, somtimes carried to an extreme, of the contertraditional experiments of modernism, but also diverse attempts to break away from modernist forms which ahd, inevitably, become in their turn conventional, as well as to over-throw the elitism of modernist "high art" by recourse to the models of "mass culture" in film, television, newspaper cartoons, and popular music. Many of the works of postmodern literature by Jorge Luis Borges Thomas Pynchon Roland Barthes , and many others so blend literary genres, cultural and stylistic levels, the serious and the playful, that they resist classification according to traditional literary rubrics. And these literary anomalies are paralleled in other arts by phenomena like pop art op art , the musical compositions of John Cage , and the films of Jean-Luc Godard and other directors.

Back in the days when Chou En-Lai and Mao Zedong were battling for control of China, Archduke Otto von Habsburg, pretender to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, asked Chou En-Lai: "What do you think of the French Revolution?" Chou En-Lai was silent for a moment, but finally answered with conviction: "It's too soon to tell." If it is too soon to tell about the French Revolution upon its two hundreth anniversary, it is much too soon to tell about postmodernism. Yet that should not, and has not, stopped scholars from talking about it and working on it.

Credit Points HECS Band Coordinator Dr Millicent Vladiv-Glover Semester (view timetable) Contact A 2.5-hour seminar per week Subject Description Taught in English, this subject will focus on the dominant modes of representation in contemporary Russian fiction, drama, and film in order to answer the question: what is (Russian) postmodernism? Students will examine the relationship of postmodernism to its antecedents in Russian and European literature and culture, and re-examine some texts of the Socialist Realist period through a postmodern perspective. The significance of violence and pornography in contemporary Russian fiction will be considered in the context of the poetics of 'magic realism', of 'zero degree' prose and of an aesthetics of the heterogeneous. Manifestos of Russian postmodernism as well as Russian Conceptualist art will be analysed in a comparative western (pop-art) context. On completion of the subject students should have become acquainted with approaches to the study of cultural texts in the general context of postmodernity as it relates to the phenomenon of the New Russia. Assessment Written work totalling 4000 words comprising a 1500 word classpaper and a 2500 word essay.

This course aims to provide an in-depth study of Contemporary Art as it evolved (and continues to evolve) in Europe and America. The course aims to define the nature of "modernism" and "post-modernism" and gauge the latter development historically, stylistically and culturally. This is an equal opportunity classroom in the presentation of ideas and issues raised by artists. Artists create works that become either personal or societal documents of a certain moment in their lives. Topics including censorship, pornography, homosexuality, AIDS and feminism may make you feel uncomfortable because of their unfamiliarity. Much like the goal of a good college education, the work of many contemporary artists challenges us and is designed to, not ask us to change or give up what we believe, but to examine our beliefs in a larger context. The content and images of some works shown in this course may be very disturbing to some students enrolled in this class. Graphic violence, alternate life styles, and explicit sexuality are themes pursued by some contemporary artists. By remaining in this course you are obligating yourself to discussion and viewing of such works.

Art of the Western World, from Ancient Greece to Post-Modernist art, is covered admirably in this companion volume to the PBS series of the same name. Perhaps one of the reasons I find this book so interesting is that I have met the authors, as Bruce Cole and Adelheid Gealt are both part of the Art programmes here at Indiana University, and the book is dedicated to Herman Wells, recently deceased, but powerful administrator who built in his 50 years of work with the university an Ivy-League-like atmosphere and, for many departments and schools, reputation. The text is beautifully illustrated, with full-colour plates and glossy photographs of paintings, sculpture, stained glass, furniture, jewelry and architecture on every page. This is also a comprehensive volume of Western art - chapters include the art of Greece, Rome, Christian Art (including a special chapter devoted to cathedrals), Renaissance art (with special chapters on Italian and Dutch art), eighteenth and nineteenth century art, and then several chapters on modern artistic movements from Impressionism forward.

If one examines socialism, one is faced with a choice: either reject Foucaultist power relations or conclude that society, paradoxically, has significance, but only if reality is interchangeable with consciousness; if that is not the case, Bataille's model of pretextual cultural theory is one of "subcapitalist textual theory", and therefore intrinsically dead. Thus, Porter suggests that the works of Gibson are not postmodern. A number of narratives concerning a mythopoetical totality exist. "Art is responsible for capitalism," says Lacan; however, according to von Ludwig , it is not so much art that is responsible for capitalism, but rather the rubicon of art. It could be said that Marx's critique of dialectic situationism states that narrativity is used to reinforce the status quo. Several constructions concerning cultural neotextual theory may be revealed. "Society is fundamentally dead," says Bataille. But Debord promotes the use of dialectic situationism to analyse reality. An abundance of dematerialisms concerning not narrative, as socialism suggests, but subnarrative exist.

home In the world of artistic expression, the change in perspective that arose with the rise of modernism, was the biggest development in representation since the renaissance. The old way of the linear perspective was abandoned in favour of new ways of looking at objects and ideas. Experiments were made in the areas of form, content and presentation. The technological horrors enacted in two successive world wars, culminating in the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the murder factories of Auschwitz and Dacchau left them demoralised and hollow. It was hard to maintain hope for the future in the wake of this savagery. This led some artists in America to turn their attention to the present and in particular the contemporary popular culture. I do not think any form of modernism is coming back. Its focus was the individuum (constrained by prety unlivable rules of very conservative society (Ibsen, Tschekhov)) aiming at freeing the induviduum socially (19th cent) then economnically (20th cent). It is possible that this concern with the indivudual and his/her rigths is definitely over. The thema of nowadays is more how can the society defend itself against extremist individuum which modernism and postmodernism produced. guthrie I'm tempted to say Fuck all. What have modernism and postmedernism actually got to do with real life?
